Re: Top loading galley fridge/freezer used as a fridge: No?
Oliver Henrichsen, SV Vela Nautica
Hello, I was so annoyed by the fridge freezer that I took it into parts and replaced the humid insulation. You can see me doing this job in my video on our youtube. But its a hell of a job. In our case the stainless was watertight, build #39. Where its not watertight and water gets under it is at the hole for the cooling pipes. What I would suggest as a minimal efford with huge effect is to replace the seal. We remouved the old seal. I got stripes of magnetic stainless and glued it on the topegdge of the stainless bassin where the old seal was. We ordered a custum sized, screw fixed freezer seal. (cheap its about 40 euros) This seal is fixed with screws (dipped in sikaflex) to the top lid. When the seal is fixed on the top, like on any comercial product, it does not move. Additional the comercial standard magnetic seal produces and airtight seal. The only moment when humidity enters is when we open the lid. Hope that helps. Except for the seal movement (need to check when I am back on the boat) my experience is the same as Arno. I also have the raised “grill” type platform on the bottom & agree with his analysis on the cause of the water accumulation. I have the small opening.

Re: Top loading galley fridge/freezer used as a fridge: No?
Hi Scott,
We use our galley-top-fridge/freezer as fridge 100% of the time. It does accumulate water on the bottom, because of this ours has a raised bottom with holes in it to keep stuff dry. Every time you open the box, humid air will get into it and eventually end up as condensation at the bottom. We have some problems with the seals, specifically the one in the back because the lid tries to push it away (to the back) when you close it. At some point the seal will detach from the fridge-box. I replaced the double-sided sticky-tape to re-attach it and I'm now using some Vaseline on the seal so the lid can slide over the seal more easy when it's closing. Apart from this every few weeks I remove the collected water from the bottom. As far as I can detect the box itself is waterproof so water does not leak into the insulation. I have no annoying smells from the fridge. Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Thanks Gary, He mentioned the "differential girdle spring" on the upper end of the grammeters. This must be an early video because the differential girdle spring was found to be a problem and later replaced by the non-differential version of the same spring. Bill

Re: Lewmar acrylic lens replacement on Amel 54
Hi Teun, Your boat "Amelit" has a fantastic sailing history. I followed the videos before we bought our 54 in 2015. I can imagine what the sun in the Pacific did to the rubbers, glad you were able to fix the seals. I like the idea of putting a film over the lens, will look into that. I have worked out the sizes, some traders are putting wrong lens sizes on the internet. Lewmar grey and smoke grey lenses are what is confusing, the grey is what looks like on our boat as pink. Complete new hatches from Lewmar are not polished aluminum and are smoke grey. By the time you add new pins, screw fittings to the replacement acrylic lens from Lewmar and then add the labour cost you are at the complete hatch price. You can get the acrylic lens cut but then you still need the other bits, seal, pins, screws. Looks like I will have some new base frames available if anyone on the forum might need them. I thank all for the advise and information. Best Barry and Penny "SV Lady Penelope II" Amel 54. #17 Sainte Anne anchorage Martinique

Top loading galley fridge/freezer used as a fridge: No?
Scott SV Tengah
Hi all,
Hope you're all doing well and staying healthy. Our A54 has a swing-door fridge (we replaced the original with a larger MS160 model with hidden evaporator plate), the galley top loading fridge/freezer and then the settee fridge/freezer. My question is related to the galley top loading fridge/freezer. Our normal M.O. is that we use all 3 of them. The 160l stainless one is used as a fridge, the settee unit is used as a freezer and the galley top loader we use as a "fruit and vegetable" fridge set on 3 of 9. The problem we're having is that the galley top loader accumulates a decent amount of water in the bottom as it doesn't have a drain and eventually smells REALLY bad. We've used the shop vac to dry it out, cleaned it in bleach, etc. but it appears the box is NOT waterproof in the sense that after flushing it out with bleach water, over the course of the next few hours, water appears to migrate INTO the stainless insides of the box. I presume that must mean the initial flush water flowed out through the corner seams (into the insulation!?!) and then is flowing back in through the corner seams. Does anyone else use it as a fridge? We've tried to adjust the lid to seal it tighter, but the seal area still gets wet and water accumulation still occurs inside the box itself. Is it simply not designed to be used as a fridge? As an aside: We just arrived in Hawaii from Panama (4848 nautical miles, 31 days!) after first abandoning our Galapagos plans and then abandoning our French Polynesia plans as country after country closed their borders. Our A54 performed admirably and despite very light winds for the first two weeks (much use of the code 0 and the Parasailor), we arrived with 600 liters of diesel! Our little tweaks to energy usage dropped our generator usage down a lot compared to our Atlantic crossing. We ran it 45 minutes every 2-3 days despite running 2 fridges and a freezer and the water maker. Nothing broke and we had a week where we covered between 170-195 miles per day. It was passages like this that make me love our Amel even more! -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Hello to the group, I put 3m solarfilm on all hatches which reduces significant the cabin temperatures, heat on the acrylic lens and rubberseals (tested with thermometer). If you use the internal sunprotection you produce a oven baking the seals. These films to fix with waterspray outside the acrylic lens is easy and can also be moved off very easy. Re: Best location for solar panels
Sorry for this late reply, Alin.I opted for an arch where I have 600 W in two pairs of 150 W panels, and two 1#5W panels (soft) on top of the bimini. Each pair has its own controller. Unfortunately, there's almost always a shadow on one of the bimini pair and they produce almost nothing most days. If you go with bimini mounts, I suggest that you have separate controllers for each panel. I suspect that the same would be true of panels mounted on the cabin top just forward of the windscreen. If you are going to go Lithiumm and try to get by without running the generator most days, you will need more than 600W of solar power. Good luck and let us know what you decide on. Thanks, Greg. BTW of all of the riggers in the world, Nicky is the best. I have known Nicky Sammut since 2015. Nicky knows Amels. He has inspected and worked on the rigging of all Amel models from the Maramu to the 64. He has sailed as crew on Amels. Nicky has installed upgraded Bamar furlers on 54s. Nicky is one of the best riggers for Amels in the Mediterranean. Malta is a great location for a haulout before an Atlantic Crossing. Bill,
I think that everyone has their own "Exchange of Knowledge" takeaways from these general discussions, and I would not be overly concerned about ploughing old ground. For example, you (and others) knew about Nicki (sp?) in Malta. I didn't and he is exactly the
type of person I have been looking for to help with a mast rehabbing project, in Greece. I have E mailed Mohammed privately, asking for more details.
Maybe the participants didn't uncover any new technical insights but "knowledge" is a pretty broad term and who knows what other "aha" moments may have come out of the meeting.
Although this is just the first one, have you thought about how to prevent the meetings from becoming hot air balloons, personal soap boxes or
platforms for inappropriate commentary. The moderators perform this function in the written forum and I would think a light touch should be enough but it is exponentially more
difficult in a real time situation

All,
In my opening remarks, I stated the purpose of our meeting should be 3-fold:
I believe we accomplished 2 of the 3 goals, Social & Shakedown. Regarding my third goal, "Exchange of knowledge," there was not much new to me and longtime members of our Group because most of what was discussed in the two topics had already been discussed
on the Group. However, for those new to Amel, the discussion on parts sourcing and standing rigging was possibly valuable.
Over the coming weeks and as we get more input from members of our Group, we will be able to determine if we want to do this again and what changes we want to make to the structure of the meeting.
A warm thank you to all that participated and to our ZOOM administrator Tilo Peters.

With all the trials and tribulations the world is experiencing perhaps a few notes from Amelians
relating some positive notes on their lock-downs, and some positive notes would be refreshing. Cloudstreet is locked down in Antigua. The local officials are very helpful. We have to be on our boats from 6 PM to 6 AM but can move freely during the day as long as we mask up and maintain social distancing. Fresh veggies and fish and abundant and the boat store is fully stocked. Great time to catch up on boat chores. It is working no new cases in 3 weeks. Bill Reynolds Cloudstreet

Re: Lewmar acrylic lens replacement on Amel 54
Hi Barry,
I was told by Anthony (the French guy who fixed in NOUMEA) that it was caused by UV rays.
My boat had been laying idle on a mooring in NEW CALEDONIA for nearly 20 months and before that buried in a dirt-pit in FIJI for close to, at least, 8 months. So in nearly 30 to 34 months she only sailed 10 days or so from FIJI to NEW CAL and the rest of the time stationary buried in a dirt pit (FIJI) and on a mooring in NEW CAL.
Just sitting in the sun without much different angles for 28/30 months is not good – I understand this also caused or at least exacerbated the delamination of ALL the brand-new QUANTUM carbon fiber sails.
Especially the 2 “vertical” hatches in the aft Master cabin were bad and I slept several nights on a soaking wet mattress. But the fix by Anthony was surprisingly easy, quick and economical and he told me that the special “high UV resistant sealant” was perfect and there should be no problem at all; and IF it happened again to repeat the procedure. I had him check & fix all other seals on every porthole on the boat in Q 1 2018 and never a leak again and it still looks great.
But pls realize he didn’t paste over the existing seal: he completely removed with a pen knife that part of the existing LEWMAR seal and then resealed with the black UV high resistant sealant and cut away the excess sealant when dry.
Another problem I had, and posted on this forum, that most of my OEM interior screens were in bad shape. When I ordered new ones (in NEW ZEALAND) and they arrived I optimistically removed all the old OEM screens and gave them away only to find out 2 or 3 days later that the new (LEWMAR) screens didn’t fit at all. Massive, massive headache as NEW ZEALAND sent new (OCEANAIR) screens and they also didn’t fit. Talking to LEWMAR USA directly didn’t help; AMEL SAV told me the screens were OCEANAIR; OCEANAIR was sold to DOMETIC etc. etc. Talking directly to DOMETIC didn’t help so, extremely frustrated, I gave up and had 7 external mosquito covers made while massively regretting that I had given away the OEM screens as it didn’t look good inside the boat.
Then in THE BOAT WORKS YARD in COOMERA (FANTASTIC place; expensive but, boy, all marine expertise concentrated on 50 acres) in December 2019 they told me they could fix it by using the replacement screens I had left in NEW CAL. This replacement exercise started Q1 2018 in NEW CAL and it was just solved & fixed Q1 2020 by hatch specialists in THE BOAT WORKS YARD.
BTW this was when I had my first negative “YACHT IN TRANSIT” into AUSTRALIA experience when the hatch screens were re-shipped from NEW CAL to COOMERA and you helped me to connect to Bob WALLACE 😊)

Hi Tuen and Mohammad,
Your 54's are #99 and #128. I am worried that you had to replace the seals. Mine is #17 one of the first and I have never had any problems with leaking. Do you know why they leaked? I have seen a little shrinkage in my seals but filled in the gap with some black gasket seal. Did Lewmar change the rubber quality? What will new units be like! Already I now need to check the frame finish, is is a matt or polished finish frame. Sorry Arno for getting your name misspelled. (Uno).
Wish boating was not complicated. You do though need to know and understand what traders are about to do to your boat.
