Hi Armo, I fly into St Thomas June 1. I do not know what tickets mt crew has purchased so I might have to wait a few days in St Thomas for them. We will then fly via private charter to SXM. I am looking forward to meeting you. Do you work on island? Fair Winds Eric

Hello Kent & Iris,
We have photos of our set up for pumping the bilges. We did not compromise any of our watertight bulkheads. It’s a bit hard to describe in words, so photos work much better.
Do you have a direct e-mail address we can send the photos and description of work to you. Happy to put it all up on the Owners site too if anyone else is interested?
Kind regards, Brian and Sue S Y Lola

Hi Brian & Sue, I'm interested in both of your modifications. I guess most if us have overfilled our fresh water tank at least once. At least the bilge gets cleaned ;-)> The only way I have of pumping water from the saloon or cabins is a sump pump that requires my 24vDC > 119v AC inverter to be functional, or a small 24v DC pump that I have used for water that collected by the forward head when the bow thruster seal failed. I have just the primary bilge pump and manual Whale pump in the engine room.
I heard a talk by a couple who got knocked down (not Amel) in the Indian Ocean by a rogue wave during an otherwise manageable storm. They had a boat full of sea water and their cabins were strewn with debris from every locker and drawer in the boat. Paper from their paperback books turned to mush and clogged their bilge pump. They ended up using a bucket. Eventually they called for help and abandoned ship because they had no fresh water, no electricity, no way to heat food, no engine, and no standing rig.
This story prompted me to install the battery box bolts that have never been there since I bought Kristy; I will install latches on the cabin sole lockers; I am looking at options for additional pumping capacity.
Do you have pictures of your modifications? I guess there is a fitting through the forward engine room bulkhead?
How much water will your engine pump? What do you do about debris? I guess the intake in the sump only allows pumping out water that gets into the grey water system. That wouldn't help much if there was water in the cabins or saloon.
Has anyone added an engine-driven pump that would not require an intact electrical system?
Any other thoughts? Kent&Iris Kristy SM243 St Michaels, MD

Re: More Options for Rub Rail Inserts
Karen Smith
With at least some businesses coming back on line in some areas, we are going to try again to put together a group of Amel owners who are looking to improve the appearance of their boats.
The rubber inserts that act as gutters along the top of the rubrail on the Super Maramu and Santorin have been occasionally available from Amel, but as heavy, bulky items shipping costs have been high from Europe to North America.
On our boat, SM #160, the rubber inserts are a faded, chalky, red with crumbling edges, and with every rain they wash a little bit more red mud down the hull. It is time for them to go.
Just before the virus business disruptions hit hard, we had identified a custom extrusion company who could reproduce these for us in white EDPM, the most UV resistant rubber compound available. All of the Super Maramus and Santorin used the same rubrail design, even those toward the end of the production run that had hard PVC gutters. Custom colors (i.e., not white) are not going to be a cost effective option.
If your rub rail gutters are showing their age, and looking a bit ratty, or have been damaged, here is the chance for a significant cosmetic upgrade.
Until I get updated quotes, I can’t promise a price, but I’d expect less than $900–delivered by UPS—anywhere in the USA. (Hawaii is possible, but can’t promise a delivery cost there yet.) The more people we have signed up, the more we can spread the setup costs, and the cheaper it gets. The last delivered price I saw from Amel was over $2300.
Terms would be: 50% deposit to secure the order and lock in the price, and 50% when ready to ship. Once the production run is set up and scheduled, we can’t add more later, so we’ll need to know everybody interested ahead of time. Reply to get on our list... No money need yet, certainly not until we have a firm price and schedule.
If you did not get an email from us in the past week or so, you have somehow dropped off our radar, so let us know you are still interested.
Not sure on timing yet, but requests for quote have gone out. I am hoping some of these places are hungry for business.

Re: no bilge pump in saloon Am54
Miles
For what is it worth, here is what I do about the fresh water overflow problem;
I have a whole house filter that attaches to the hose to the water source. A short hose goes from the filter to the boat water intake. The filter 1) makes sure that there is never any chlorine or dirt in my water tanks, and 2) slows the flow of the water coming in. I see how long it takes for the first 100 liters and then I set a kitchen timer for the amount of water I want. When the timer goes off, I turn off the hose. I do also have a backup electric pump that I bought after a dishwasher incident. The pump is a big, heavy thing that hardware stores sell for pumping water out of flooded basements. It is centrifugal so bits of paper and debris do not bother it.

I have been slugging it out with the authorities in St Maarten since March 24. I believe they will allow me to charter a small plane to get to the island. Our Santorin already had a Bimini added. The centre strut of the frame is bolted forward of the Genoa sheet winches. You can only do this on the Santorin because the SM has two winches there. We have added a front zipped in window sides and a back (all removable). We also have sun shades for the sides and back. Because they are attached to the Bimini it is free standing and not attached to the mizzen shrouds. We have kept the original Amel hood for the integrity of the boat, but never use it. We sail In foul weather inside the enclosure And have had no issues in winds up to f9. I think the main issue for the Santorin is that the original headroom of the standard hood is a lot lower than the SM. Raising that to standing headroom would be more difficult. But other SN owners mY chip in with solutions. Ian Ocean Hobo SN96

Hi Bernd, I clamped the tube to the mizzen side stay as in Bill Rouses photo but I ran it over the boom rather than under. This has the advantage of much better head room. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Re: Cockpit enclosure
There are several ways. The examples below are for a SM. I believe that they will work for a SN Ketch, but not a Sloop. Look for the eye bolt under where the mizzen boom connects to the mast. Use a piece of PVC through the bolt and stainless steel tubes slide over the PVC. Clamp the tube to the mizzen shroud this way:

Hi,
can anyone please give advise and provide pics how you did fix the aft cockpit enclosure on a SN or SM? especially how and where did you attach the support arch in the aft. -- Bernd SN 119 / Cascais, Portugal

Hi John:
Thanks for your work on this. I will next be aboard on 4 June 2020 and will initiate some photo exchanges with ACMO. What was involved with, "engineer directed attempts to "clean" the chrome". Did they specify how quickly you had to return the removed turnbuckles? Just going on the hard the end of June and not sure I could get the new and swap out things in time. Dear Mark

I have this style of alarm and it works well so long as the battery is good and all connections in the battey compartment are also good.
The pump that pumps out the grey water in the engine room could help with the flooding as i too flooded my freshwater, I now sit focused, like when refueling, watching the water fill. What I have done is put a “y” toilet diversion valve inline. I have
the original suction going up through as original but I have fitted some cam lock fittings and about 12 meters of hose so I can now reach most disasters by switching over the “y” valve and pump out the remote areas.
The other thing I installed was a “t - fitting“, valve and strainer on the main engine raw water cooling line with another pick up into the bilge incase the grey water pump failed or I can use the motor as an emergency pump if needed in an emergency.
Cheers
