Re: Membrane Tube end caps
Hi Danny,
I made a change to the endcaps to solve this problem once and for all. I drilled 3 holes in the side of the cap, making sure not to drill too deep and ending up in the inner cavity. Then I cut some thread in the hole (M6) and put a very short bolt with a hex head in the hole using 3M 5200. Now I have three points on the cap I put the blade of a screwdriver to and gently tap the cap from the tube. What Desalator should have done is make the cap diameter lager then the tube diameter so you can develop some grip on the cap. Also the price is insane. I'm a bit underwhelmed with the way this watermaker is designed, although the dual voltage thing is very clever. The control logic is well below par for the price I would say. Re: Switch on Bilge Float Tube
Gracias Diego. I think this must be an old high water alarm and will be removing it. If I find it is something different then I will post on the forum. I installed a separate system next to the AC pump last year (per Bill Rouse's photo). Ian Loca Lola II SM153 Fort Lauderdale, FL

Re: Switch on Bilge Float Tube
Hello Ian,
I also had problems with that system in my Sharki. At present I am testing a new tech from one of my tech partners. It is an optical based on diodes. I have installed 2 optical sensors into the bilge. One is for activeting the pump Instaled in the lower part of the bilge) and the other one is for the alarm (instaled at half part of the bilge) You can see the system in this video. I speak in spanish. promise to add english subtitles soon :-) If you are interested I can send you technical and commercial information. Hi Arno, If I keep responding like this people may think I am an "expert". I am not. Just been around for a while. Puzzled by the issues with the end caps. Mine have certainly never gone soft nor caused problems (see my previous post). As to removing them there have been a number of innovative suggestions on the forum. The best I have tried is to take a about 1,5 m to 2 m of cord. Dyneema is good, no stretch. Double it to make a loop and secure the ends on either side of the end cap with a hose clamp. Place the loop over the winch on the side of the mizzen. Holding the membrane tube in both hands with the cord slack, tug sharply. Works a treat. Last tip. As you disassemble the unit carefully mark all parts to enable correct reassembly. Saves the OH s...... moments Kind Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Hi all, We had the problem of corrosion on the membrane tubes last year with exploded end caps and frame. I had called around with little help and happened to find any tubes I could find. I found that any water maker manufacturer that offered stand alone tubes works. We found some from Village Marine. Plumbing is basically the same, water in water out. Easy to do. We know where you hide and fully intend to visit when lock down ends. Regarding the Duo 60/100, I’ve had exactly your experience but still end up with rusted interconnects, leaks at the end caps, rust on the HP lines although they are SS dairy industry high pressure units. I got the new end caps made through Ocean System, a well known designer/builder of desalination plants. I hope to clear up all my problems within the next 2 weeks. Hi JP. locked down a day sail North of you but in my home on the shores of Mill Bay Mangonui. We have the duo 60 We had one end cap split where the joining tube between the end caps enters but the 0 ring still did its job and we didn't get a spray of water. I discovered the split when changing membranes. For simplicity I took the cap to a local NZ machine shop, he identified the material and made me a new one. Having said all that we have had no leak problems and believe with careful placement of the correct size 0 rings in all situations (To be sure of size I get mine from desalator) and judicious tensioning of the through bolts ensuring even tightness I doubt you should have a problem. Wrong 0 rings and or unequal tension and there may well be issues. The through bolts do not need to be particularly tight, they are just holding the end caps in place, the 0 rings stop the water. When putting the end caps in care has to be taken to ensure the 0 ring doesn't ride up out of its groove. I put a large cable tie over the o ring to hold it close in until it enters. Kind Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

She is at Club Nautico in San Juan. I will be flying down as soon as I can be sure that I won’t have to spend 2 weeks in quarantine at the airport hotel. Even though there’s more square feet in most hotel rooms than on a Super Maramu, I think I would go certifiably nuts in a hotel.

Hi Eric,
No idea. Need to be on more intimate terms with the governor. I heard today from the dockmaster in the marina where Aletes is that a captain of a mega yacht flew in, told the authorities that he was going to quarantine on his boat. They told him no way, and he is now spending 14 days at the airport hotel. Not what he had planned. On Apr 19, 2020, at 8:50 PM, eric freedman <kimberlite@...> wrote:

My only thought is like others, make certain that there is no chlorine. Obviously, there shouldn’t be if all you do is make RO water. Do you ever put water in the tank from the marina? We often have both RO and shore water, tough to tell how much chlorine, although you can buy test strips. I will sometimes flush with a couple of gallons of RO water drawn from the control panel tap, rather than flush with water from the tank.
Assuming the above is useless advice, you might try looking at https://www.genesysro.com/uploads/docs/STUDY%20OF%20THE-PHYSICAL-AND-CHEMICAL-DAMAGE-ON-REVERSE-OSMOSIS-MEMBRANES-DETECTED-BY-AUTOPSIES-NURIA.pdf
This details some of what can go wrong, including post-mortem pictures. Interestingly, there are several causes for physical damage to the membranes (as opposed to chemical) that might have some bearing on your issue.

Re: Membrane Tube end caps
I find the endcaps extremely poorly designed and made in such a way that removal because a needlessly complicated struggle. Even the black ones are silly expensive and prone to deterioration over time. The plastic becomes soft at the inside where it's exposed to salt water.
I'm sure there must be better designs for this. Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Re: Where to put the life raft
When replacing my OEM 8 person raft last year I was told similar; you don’t want a life raft much larger than the expected occupancy. Having 2 people in an 8 persons raft makes it also vulnerable to being blown/turned upside down in which case you will never be able to right it again in heavy sea: thus virtually impossible to survive as the top of the life raft can NOT function as a solid bottom.
So I got a new 4 person life raft to replace the 8 person ZODIAC. Also – since ZODIA was no longer produced/available & all replacements were deeper it necessitated a welding adjustment to the cradle in the rail.

For what it's worth, I was talking to a coast guard guy about rafts recently. I was about to replace my 6 person zodiac with another 6 person raft. He cautioned that most bail out injuries happen after you're in the raft getting thrown
around. He said 2 people in a 4 person raft was probably safer as you tend not to be propelled from one side to the other. It's also lighter obviously when deploying it.
