Re: Excessive usage of water maker membranes

She is at Club Nautico in San Juan. I will be flying down as soon as I can be sure that I won’t have to spend 2 weeks in quarantine at the airport hotel. Even though there’s more square feet in most hotel rooms than on a Super Maramu, I think I would go certifiably nuts in a hotel.

Hi Eric,
No idea. Need to be on more intimate terms with the governor. I heard today from the dockmaster in the marina where Aletes is that a captain of a mega yacht flew in, told the authorities that he was going to quarantine on his boat. They told him no way, and he is now spending 14 days at the airport hotel. Not what he had planned. On Apr 19, 2020, at 8:50 PM, eric freedman <kimberlite@...> wrote:

My only thought is like others, make certain that there is no chlorine. Obviously, there shouldn’t be if all you do is make RO water. Do you ever put water in the tank from the marina? We often have both RO and shore water, tough to tell how much chlorine, although you can buy test strips. I will sometimes flush with a couple of gallons of RO water drawn from the control panel tap, rather than flush with water from the tank.
Assuming the above is useless advice, you might try looking at https://www.genesysro.com/uploads/docs/STUDY%20OF%20THE-PHYSICAL-AND-CHEMICAL-DAMAGE-ON-REVERSE-OSMOSIS-MEMBRANES-DETECTED-BY-AUTOPSIES-NURIA.pdf
This details some of what can go wrong, including post-mortem pictures. Interestingly, there are several causes for physical damage to the membranes (as opposed to chemical) that might have some bearing on your issue.

I now see that the meeting is at 2100 local time (BST) in the UK rather than 2000. The Eastern Australia local time of 0600 is therefore correct. Apologies for any confusion that my confusion may have generated :-) Dean Sent from my iPhone X

Re: Membrane Tube end caps
I find the endcaps extremely poorly designed and made in such a way that removal because a needlessly complicated struggle. Even the black ones are silly expensive and prone to deterioration over time. The plastic becomes soft at the inside where it's exposed to salt water.
I'm sure there must be better designs for this. Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Re: Where to put the life raft
When replacing my OEM 8 person raft last year I was told similar; you don’t want a life raft much larger than the expected occupancy. Having 2 people in an 8 persons raft makes it also vulnerable to being blown/turned upside down in which case you will never be able to right it again in heavy sea: thus virtually impossible to survive as the top of the life raft can NOT function as a solid bottom.
So I got a new 4 person life raft to replace the 8 person ZODIAC. Also – since ZODIA was no longer produced/available & all replacements were deeper it necessitated a welding adjustment to the cradle in the rail.

For what it's worth, I was talking to a coast guard guy about rafts recently. I was about to replace my 6 person zodiac with another 6 person raft. He cautioned that most bail out injuries happen after you're in the raft getting thrown
around. He said 2 people in a 4 person raft was probably safer as you tend not to be propelled from one side to the other. It's also lighter obviously when deploying it.

Dean,
You are correct if we were going to do this at 2000 UK time, but we are scheduled to do this at 2000 GMT. My table originally had UK and GMT on the same row. That is corrected below:

Switch on Bilge Float Tube
When cleaning our bilge, we noticed the cap had come off of this (see pictures). It is attached to the tube that houses the bilge float and appears to be a switch. But I am not really sure what this is. It's not our float switch. We have the standard version of that. But maybe it's an old high water alarm with relay to the bilge pump? Can someone enlighten me? I need to source or to fabricate parts to cover it properly. The parts that remain are a plastic disc shape cap that used to be attached to something rubber that is either a membrane or a seal, and a piece of a metal gasket.

Thanks. I also took the entire holder to the shop… to verify the interior measurements. I suspect the new ones will be made to a closer tolerance. Dessalator after sales service has been non existent. Cheers,

Re: Membrane Tube end caps
FYI, Dessalator originally made the membrane tube end caps out of white nylon. Emek copied Dessalator. Dessalator's choice of Nylon proved to be the wrong choice. Dessalator later made end caps from a harder material which was black. I am not sure of what the black material is, but, in my experience is that there have been very few issues with the Dessalator black end caps.

Hi Eric,

I had a pair of white end caps made by EMEK marine and these were not good. (I discarded them after just looking at them) But even from the factory, immediately after installation, the black ones leaked and were badly drilled out. Dessalator refused to replace under warranty even when supplied with photos…. I took a well turned end piece to a NZ shop and had a dozen made locally; they are done but I cannot pick them up due to lockdown…. Other Amel owners participated to a small group buy. (About 60% of Dessalator price without delivery and GST costs) What I’m most interested in is any modifications done to the tubes, end pieces or complete replacement of the Duo 100 membrane setup to deal with too many leaks. Kind regards,

Hello Bill,
I’d like to address the subject of the Dessalator membrane holders. I consider them under engineered, especially the end caps. (Duo60 and Duo 100 models)
I’ve had a NZ shop replicate the end caps but due to Covid-19, I’ve been unable to pickup the parts and complete a change over.
Has anyone modified the tubes or manufactured a different type of membrane system?
Kind regards,
