Hello again,
Be aware that if you try my (Last Option) , and you still have oil left in your bow thruster it is going to leak all over the place when you remove the backing plate. Be aware and minimize the mess. Ken Powers Aquarius SM2K #262 Currently in Thailand

Re: Bow Thruster Siezed
Ken Powers SV Aquarius
Hello,
This video shows my rebuild of the bow thruster. If you can't get the lower unit to disengage using all the tricks from other Amel Owners, you can do this for a last resort..... Here is a link to my video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-xWzNfnWLw If you boat is out of the water you may be able to do the following... If in the water you can do this under water in scuba gear, will be difficult but doable.. 1. Drop the bow thruster 2. Remove prop 3. Remove the hard filler covering 4 screws - at 6:05 minutes 4. Remove 4 screws holding back plate in place. at 6:15 minutes 5. Remove the main gear and shaft. at 6:44 minutes 6. Remove the bolt at the bottom of the shaft holding the small gear in place. 6:59 minutes (make sure you have something holding up the tube until you are ready to drop it) 7. The lower unit should now come down without the shaft. (don't drop any of the parts if you are under water.) 8. Now with the shaft visible, and hopefully you will have an easier time getting it loose from the motor. This may or may not work. But, I think it will. Hope you don't have go down this path, but it might be your last option. Ken Powers Aquarius SM2K #262 Currently stuck in Thailand

Re: Headroom
Hi Oliver At 6Ft 4, I am 1.94m not as tall as you, but even so, still found all Amel bunks just marginally too short (at 2.0m in length each) for good night sleep. Our solution was to convert the rear cabin bed to turn sideways (as noted by another member in this thread) which provides a wonderful HUGE Super King size bed, just as comfortable as our King bed at home! We had a custom made innerspring mattress & Latex top made for that bed which was great, and also provided the benefit of being able to sleep in either direction depending on what tack you were sailing. Although you are left a downside of less cabin floor space, we found this a small price to pay, and still rate this is one of the most necessary adjustments we made on Island Pearl II. The inner sprung mattress was zipped into 3 sections to still provide easy access to the rudder stock under in an emergency. Also, another suggestion for you is regarding the walkthrough area "hot-bed" above the battery compartment. Here we cut a section out of the end timber panel (at bed top height) between the bunk and the adjoining clothing cupboard and placed a removable cushion at bed height in the lower section of the cupboard, and this cavity was nicely finished off with matching timber edging so it looked like a factory alteration, and nobody ever noticed it. This other small necessary alteration to the Amel made it possible for me to sleep on the hotbed too during ocean crossing passages, with my feet through into the wardrobe, which provided peace of mind when crossing oceans alone with my wife as she could easily alert and communicate with me through the little window to the cockpit. With these two changes, as well as memory foam toppers custom fitted to all bunks, the Amel SM becomes the perfect "tall persons'" long term ocean cruising yacht! I have used Garhauer blocks, vangs, and other products on my boats for over 25 years. They are bulletproof, extremely well made, extraordinarily strong and have a 10 year unconditional guarantee. In addition they are ½ the price of almost all name brand blocks, and are made in the USA . The stainless in not made in China.
I carry a complete set of replacement Garhauer blocks for every block on Kimberlire. Fair Winds Eric Amel Super Maramu #376

Hi Kent
thanks for bringing me a selection of dowels! (Kent’s boat Kristy is anchored beside me.) The pipe walls are 1mm thick, the inside diameter is 12mm so a 10mm dowel is perfect for the job. I might epoxy it in. Eamonn Washington Travel Bug Super Maramu #151 Currently locked down in Antigua..

Hi Karen,
Sorry for the late reply, Check out https://www.carlingtech.com/thermal-cb-clb-series ; this is not a direct replacement, no manual trip, but it is a disruptor style circuit breaker. Hope this helps, the data sheet is attached below. -- Mark Mueller Brass Ring A54

Re: Headroom
Oooo, Doug reminded me of something (you might like this too, doug).... Our SM aft cabin was modified brilliantly into a wall-to-wall bed. It has some custom foam inserts around the four sides about 12 inches deep (perfect for throwing your book or reading light or bottle of water), and the bed itself uses two stock standard mattresses of any sort you like, bringing it to king size. With the same-height foam inserts, a 6'6 person could easily sleep stretched out. In our case, there are three of us back there, with loads of room to spare. I'll see if I can put up a pic...

Re: Headroom
Doug Smith
Oliver, I am 6’6”, so I guess that equals about 1,95m. And I was equally concerned about this. The areas you mention are not a concern. The boom is not really a factor in the cockpit on the 54. The salon, galley and aft cabin are plentiful in the headroom. The areas I was most concerned with as well were the aft bed, and shower space. On my 54, I can stand in the shower and take a shower without crouching, and I can almost lay fully stretched out on the aft berth. Similar sizing to most hotel beds, that are considered a queen or full size. Additionally, the area I was most impressed by was the two starboard side chairs in the main settee area of the cabin. I haven’t found a more comfortable spot to relax on the inside of the boat. The chairs fit a longer frame and there are support areas to place your legs both underway and bouncing around on passage, as well as when at anchorage. The engine room has abundant room even for guys our height, but the area where the watermaker and inverters are, might need a smaller frame to get back and work on those areas.

Re: Broken water level dipstick
Could you insert and glue a dowel into the broken ends?
Kent SM 243 Kristy On Apr 4, 2020, at 8:58 PM, Eamonn Washington <eamonn.washington@...> wrote: Hi I bent the water level dipstick with 900 liters in the tank, so near the bottom of the dipstick. (I was running the watermaker, stumbled going down the companionway and grabbed anything.) It is 90% broken through. I tried self amalgamating tape for a temporary solution, but it is too thick to drop down into the tank. I believe I need to install a new pipe. I guess I will have to take out the dishwasher and empty the tank, but i have never seen the float and don’t know how easy it will be to install a new pipe in it. Any ideas? Also, what material is the pipe made from? It did not seem to be a normal pipe from a hardware shop; it is lightweight and brittle. Re: Headroom
Hey Oliver! Good call on looking at Amels, for hundreds of reasons. Headroom is defo one of them... I just measured for ya, our SM has 208 cm in the galley and saloon, and 200 cm in the head and entrance to the forecabin. The corridor to the aft cabin of course is gonna make ya stoop, I do, and I'm "only" 6'1. But you won't have an issue in the main part of the boat.

Headroom
Oliver Biederbeck
Hi Amel owners,
I'm in the early phase of buying a boat on which my wife and I will spend up to 5 years, maybe more. Due to my body height of 2,02 metres (6"8), I have some special requirements towards boat size. Minimum headroom is 2m The Maramu, Super Maramu and the Amel 54 are on our radar because of their overall bluewater qualities but we never had the chance getting onboard of one of the older models. To be shortlisted, a boat must have at least 2 metres of headroom in the galley and in the salon. So I would like to ask you as proud owners: What is the actual headroom
Thanks in advance for your help. Cheers Oliver
