Hi Tom, I'm just catching up with this thread so late to the game. We also had some leakage along the forward inward edge of the tank so removed it and had it rewelded like James did. As others have said, freeing the tank is pretty straightforward but then it’s very awkward to move because it’s heavy and top heavy. We used a strap arrangement like you see for a couple of people moving a refrigerator. I removed the companionway rail plus the top of the hatch (it’s lightly glued on, back out the screws then tap upward with a block of wood). Then I removed the bottom stop block and could drop the hatch below the level of the threshold to gain a couple more inches of clearance. To get the tank out of the salon we had to rotate it 180 vertically, so that the fuel fill pipe was still forward but down (don't ask how we figured that out). Once it was in the cockpit a mizzenmast halyard did the trick for lifting it out and over the side. One other thing is that when you install the new tank it’s easiest to get the fill hose in place by removing the deck fill fitting. Good luck!

My first thought is also fuel supply.  One time we started our engine with the fuel shut off valve closed...she ran perfect then just quit.  I can see the engine pulling a vacuum on the fuel line stalling ...then as the vacuum leaks off being able to restart.  

Now my second thought is based on you saying it was a new engine.   Does the engine have any automatic shutdown features like the genset?  Recall the genset has a host of conditions that will cause the machine to shutdown.  Just owndering if the new engine presumably with a computer is doing something on it's own.

I had a similar colored liquid in my bilge. after a long search it turned out to be the red gear box oil mixed with diesel. reason was leaking gearbox and leaking diesel hp pump. fixed both and all is fine now.
you might also want to check on the heat exchanger lines if everything is tightened properly.
what does the liquid smell / taste like?

Thank you very much. I fully understand your reasons for stopping and shipping from Australia to Turkey. I met many in the Pacific who had similar plans.

We are glad we completed the circumnavigation, but I would not do it again. Next, we may buy a smaller boat, perhaps a Santarin in the Med and tour there for a season or two then sell it again rather than the long ocean passages. So no need for the wonderful ocean crossing capability of our lovely SM anymore. That said, our favorite oceans were certainly the Indian and the Pacific so you would miss out on some nice places in the Indian Ocean such as Rodrigues, Reunion, Chagos, Maldives, Madagascar etc.

Best of luck with it all Kent. I was hoping to catch up with you on our way around as it was so nice to meet so many Amel folk as we circumnavigated.  Perhaps look us up in Brisbane when you reach Australia.

You can contact the Manager "Mandy" on email: info@..., or call her on and ask her if she has any free spots on D Berth facing the main channel as Island Pearl II is normally there, and am happy to keep a good eye on any Amels who berth near Island Pearl II. Unfortunately, I think there was recently only one space available, so if interested then try to contact her soon and mention me in case that helps get you in. The marina is located at 158 Griffith Road, Newport, QLD 4020... Phone: 07 3203 5855 

The marina/boatyard called "Laurie's Marina" in Mooloolaba is also a reasonable option, and I am aware that they did lift an Amel 53 there a few years ago, and built a nice hardtop for it, and the owner was happy with all the work they did. 

The other marina to consider is Scarborough Marina (very near Newport Marina) which has a fully working boatyard, however, their travel lift is a bit small, so I personally would not lift even my Amel 53 there. Contact them on +61 7 3880 0300 - website www.scarbmarina.com.au.

In terms of having Copper Coat work done I would firstly trust the "BOATWORKS" boatyard on the Gold Coast the most. That is where I always haul out Island Pearl II for normal antifouling paint and prop shaft / Bowthruster servicing, but I do the servicing myself and use them for the paint job. It is without any doubt the best boatyard we have come across anywhere in the world and has all the expertise and parts you could need right there. Prices are not bad too. You can contact them on admin@the boatworks.com.au or phone +61 7 55 000 000 and speak to the manager about who has the best copper coat application experience in his yard. If you have an Autoprop, there is the Australian Autoprop agent right there too who recently replaced my autoprop bearings there and did a great job.

Finally, Teuns, check with Boatworks about long term out of water storage for your Amel too. I have been away from Australia for 3 years now but recently heard that Boatworks now have this service too. That could be a good option for you too.

You could have some water in the diesel tank.  The fact that the boat has been sitting idle for a few months has given plenty of time for condensation to form inside the tank and settle to the bottom of the tank.

Thanks Mark. I'm going to check the fuel filters next. It's strange that it sounds just fine, no rough running then stops. The engine is pretty much brand new, so at least I know its not the compression. I will check the fuel and air.

Older diesel engines need three things to keep on running:

2.  Air
3.  Compression

The overwhelming majority of the time an issue like you describe will be fuelling related.  Have you checked and changed all of the fuel filters?  That is where I would start

Older diesel engines need three things to keep on running:

1.  Fuel
2.  Air
3.  Compression

The overwhelming majority of the time an issue like you describe will be fuelling related.  Have you checked and changed all of the fuel filters?  That is where I would start

Hello Santorin LO (by the way, what is your name?)

If I understand correctly you suspect you have a leak around the timing belt area - not the gearbox end that your picture shows.  So the picture is just the "red water" accumulating after draining down under the engine, correct?
If this is, indeed, rusty water (I assume your coolant is a bit rusty) and you have eliminated it coming from a leak in any of the cooling water hoses, there are two additional possibilities.

1, It may be the fresh water pump is beginning to leak around it's shaft seal. This pump's shaft area is not visible without taking off the entire timing belt cover. That is, you really can't see it leaking; you just see some dripping below the timing belt cover.  The shop manual says it must be replaced (it is not repairable without modifying the pump housing) and to do so involves stripping the entire timing belt end (easily done if you put the engine in the cockpit first). (About $200 for a new pump)

2. It may be you've got a pin-hole leak in the freeze plug (aka explansion plug) under the coolant water pump. Also requires stripping the timing belt end. (About $1 for a new plug)

If either is the case the leaking will become progressively worse, so you can monitor it to be sure exactly what it is, although you still won't know if it is the pump or the freeze plug until you strip the timing belt end first, put some coolant in and observe where it is leaking. As it gets worse it will start leaking faster and faster, to the point where your coolant level will drop and overheating will occur, so keep a good eye on it. 

If it is one of these causes and since your engine is probably approaching 30 years old, replace the pump and all the freeze plugs while you've got the engine in the cockpit..

PS - To help with the diagnosis you might try putting 2-3 oz of blue food coloring in the cooling water and see if your red turns blue.

Yanmar Diesel Won't Stay Running

It's been several months since my wife and I left our boat up in the Chesapeake and upon arrival today to have it hauled for a long over due cleaning. The Yanmar diesel fired right up, but then after a couple of minutes dies. Wait a couple of minutes and it fires right up again, runs for a couple of minutes and shuts off. It runs smoothly and fires up instantly so it doesn't sound like she's starving for fuel or air. The engine only has 30 hours and has be very reliable.

Any ideas?

We have just arrived back in Australia after completing our circumnavigation this week. Right now we are in Bundaberg for a few weeks but will return home to Brisbane soon around mid-November.

Please do not ever consider leaving your Amel on an anchor anywhere in Brisbane. That was not good advice at all.

In terms of Brisbane Marinas, we choose a small fairly unknown marina called Newport Marina to berth SV island Pearl II since it is safe, within walking distance from the train to the city and airport. It is a quiet residential type marina with old, but well-kept facilities, and has plenty of car parking right near the boat. It is not a lively place with shops and restaurants, but we like it quiet and it is surrounded by nice upmarket waterfront homes on a canal system. This in our view makes it the safest marina in Brisbane if a tropical storm should ever hit, which is almost impossible. 

Fortunately, the prices there also very reasonable since it is not well known that the entrance channel has recently been deepened, and this was also not shown on the Navionics charts. Most cruisers would not be aware that they could get in there, but it is now at least  2m at low tide LAT, so it is easy to get your Amel in there at most times other than just an hour or two either side of absolute low tides. You can contact the Manager "Mandy" on email: info@..., or call her on and ask her if she has any free spots on D Berth facing the main channel as Island Pearl II is normally there, and am happy to keep a good eye on any Amels who berth near Island Pearl II. Unfortunately, I think there was recently only one space available, so if interested then try to contact her soon and mention me in case that helps get you in. The marina is located at 158 Griffith Road, Newport, QLD 4020... Phone: 07 3203 5855 

The marina/boatyard called "Laurie's Marina" in Mooloolaba is also a reasonable option, and I am aware that they did lift an Amel 53 there a few years ago, and built a nice hardtop for it, and the owner was happy with all the work they did. 

The other marina to consider is Scarborough Marina (very near Newport Marina) which has a fully working boatyard, however, their travel lift is a bit small, so I personally would not lift even my Amel 53 there. Contact them on +61 7 3880 0300 - website www.scarbmarina.com.au.

In terms of having Copper Coat work done I would firstly trust the "BOATWORKS" boatyard on the Gold Coast the most. That is where I always haul out Island Pearl II for normal antifouling paint and prop shaft / Bowthruster servicing, but I do the servicing myself and use them for the paint job. It is without any doubt the best boatyard we have come across anywhere in the world and has all the expertise and parts you could need right there. Prices are not bad too. You can contact them on admin@the boatworks.com.au or phone +61 7 55 000 000 and speak to the manager about who has the best copper coat application experience in his yard. If you have an Autoprop, there is the Australian Autoprop agent right there too who recently replaced my autoprop bearings there and did a great job.

Finally, Teuns, check with Boatworks about long term out of water storage for your Amel too. I have been away from Australia for 3 years now but recently heard that Boatworks now have this service too. That could be a good option for you too.
