Joerg,

We stayed in the Cascais marina last year, and there was a fairly large anchorage just outside the entrance. I have no knowledge of the holding, but there were some large boats there.

Hello fellow Amel owners,

I am thinking of getting some upholstery and canvas work done for Amelia. Specifically I want to replace the saloon cushions and covers. The foam itself is beginning to deteriorate and the covers are pretty tatty.
So that would be a case of replacing like for like.

In addition I would like to have a winter cockpit enclosure made. I have looked at the NV website and their design, it looks good but is pretty expensive.

Next year we will be sailing over to Turkey and the Dodecanese. I was thinking that I might get a good job done in Turkey for a reasonable price. Not to mention the VAT aspect of ordering from NV in France.

I am looking for recommendations for, I guess, Turkey.????

Charles, Initially I reserved a table for 8 then 12 and a couple of days ago called and asked if we could get a table for 16 . We now have 15 coming ,so I guess we can squeeze in 17 ,so please join us. I will not ,even if possible try to get a larger table ,I don't think they want to hear from me again. So if anyone else would like to come ,please just show up and you probably can get a table nearby,we will be upstairs.

Re: B&G Hydra 3000 True wind direction

Dean Gillies

Hi Wolfgang,
I noticed exactly the same problem when I bought Stella. I’m pretty sure that my system was configured as original from Amel. (Previous owner did not change anything).

I cannot find out right now exactly what source setting I used in the Hydra, but I’m fairly sure it’s not 16.

BUT the important thing is that you need to make sure that the Navnet3D system is actually connected to, AND is sending out heading data to the Hydra.

This is configured in the setup/installation process, and on my boat this was not turned on by Amel/Pochon.

So, in short the process is:

1. Find out which NMEA data Out port on the master MFD is physically connected to the Hydra.

2. Make sure the MFD is configured to send heading data on that port.

3. Set up the Hydra to use that data.

I’m sorry I cannot tell you which port numbers to use because I’m travelling at the moment. Regardless, your boat may not be wired exactly as mine, so you should go through the process yourself.

Hop that helps a bit.

Re: Furuno “Loss of GPS”/DOP Error alarm and AIS help

Dean Gillies

Hi Tony,
The Navnet3D system has a failover action with GPS that I’ve observed, which may be relevant to your problem.

Typically there is more than one GPS data source available in a system. In my case it was the FA50 AIS and the GP150. The source to be used is selected as you step through the system installation process. In my case it was selected to be the GP150.
If during normal operation, the source of GPS fails then the system automatically changes to the other GPS source. In my case, the GP150 failed and the system started to use the FA50 AIS as the source of GPS. I knew nothing about the change, as the system just did it automatically.
It took some time before I noticed the GP150 had actually failed and was not supplying GPS data anymore.

This does not help with the question of why your GP150 is faulty, but may help in your understanding of what has happened in your system.

Furuno would not repair my GP150 so I bought a a couple of inexpensive GPS antennas with NMEA outputs and located them behind the instrument table. They are now my (dual redundant) primary source of GPS for the system.

Good luck!

Wolfgang,

Maybe it is as simple as needing calibration. I would pull the manual and try that first.

Good luck.

Hi Vic,

One of our very clever crew members found a great spot for it.  Kelly built a sturdy mounting board with rubber feet and then the other crew member lashed the whole assembly to the mizzen mast above the outhaul winch.  It's out of the way, reasonably unobstructed, and much less likely to get released by a wave than a rail mount.  I've attached a photo.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Main Sail Furling Motor Issue

Beaute Olivier

Hello Mark,

I got your private e-mail too.
The grease originally put in the manual furler (mainsail or mizzen) is silicone grease, rather sticky and water resistant.

The furler is rather resistant to water ingress but it is true that this "anti dust lip seal" on top of it is important.
The lip seal at the winch handle nozzle is important too.

During a survey, I always test the manual furler separately, mainly to check if there is not too much resistance that could disable or overload the electric furler.
This test should be done once a year, just to make sure the manual furling is easily working.

[Edited Message Follows]

Hi All

Grateful for your thoughts:

1. My 2008 A54 #102 has the Furuno GPS Navigator GP-150. It’s recently started sounding an intermittent No GPS alarm and, more frequently, a DOP Error alarm. It self tests fine. In Alarm settings I’ve selected OFF for the GPS alarm. I have selected RAIM OFF. I have tried to smooth the fixes by selecting a long interval. I’ve selected 3D/2D instead of 2D because the DOP threshold is (counter-intuitively?) less sensitive. But No GPS or DOP Error alarms still sound when underway. Sometimes several times in a few minutes and then, as I say, after an interval of over 30 minutes for just one time. In the port currently, 5-8 satellites are showing.

I’m replacing all the Nav this winter but would like the equipment to work on passage tomorrow from Kefalonia to Malta via Sicily (320Nm). If I turn the GPS Navigator off (and use papercharts and iPad) then the Furuno auto pilot No Speed alarm sounds (despite me switching off that Alarm on the Autopilot!).

One thought (credit Bill Rouse, thanks) is UV damage to the GPS antenna (in presumably usual location starboard side cockpit under hard Bimini roof). Any other thoughts / straightforward Autopilot workarounds please?

2. AIS. I have Furuno Navnet vx2 at the Nav station. There does not appear to be an AIS option despite the boat having a receiver. It seems AIS vessels were only displayed on the helm repeater (not the Nav station plotter where there is no AIS option) but this plotter has ‘frozen’ and does not show current position regardless of repeated reconnection. I have tried Corrosion X in the terminals. Any thoughts on why this may not be working or can anyone tell me how to display AIS at the Nav station plotter please?

UPDATE: Corrosion X has now solved the problem. Nav AIS working too. Still grateful for any help on Point 1 re GPS/DOP Error alarms please

Thanks very much!

Normally when an Amel has issues with TWS or TWA, the problem is that Speed is missing. Also, in your B&G manual, yo will find instructions to calibrate TWS and TWA.

Sounds good, Pat. Magnia Friday night and you had put 6:30 on the table.
Seems a number of us will be on Back Creek so let’s see if there is interest in dinner at Davis’ on Thursday evening.

Mike, Assuming everyone will be at the show, Mangia's is very convenient , right across the street from the show,a two minute walk. Its also a very nice place with great food , it also would not require people to somehow travel to Back Creek as the show is letting out.
Hope to see ya there,
Pat

Hi Pat. Tom and I hope to be there Thursday and Friday. A nice dinner place on Back Creek would be Davis’s Pub which a block from Mears Marina. May avoid some of the downtown hubbub. Rustic, good food and popular with the locals even during the week so reservations may be appropriate if they do them. Maybe both Thursday and Friday night Especially if Friday doesn’t work for some. Just a thought.

Diane and I will be sailing to the boat show this year, as we have for the last 35 yrs. We would be anchored in the main anchorage and would invite everyone out to the boat for drinks and pizza and we could do that. But it may be more convenient to meet at a local restaurant across the street from the show. Mangia Italian Grill has great pizza ,etc. and is only about 100 ft. from the show. Friday or Sat. about 6:30 would work for us ,Sat. may be busier . If anyone would be interested, lets get a head count .

Iris and I will be driving over to Annapolis for the show.  If there’s a get-together for dinner and/or drinks, we’d like to join in.

Mike,

No problem.  JL Mertz's Speedi-Sleeve idea is a good one too as the surface finish on the shaft is really not good enough to ensure a good seal with the oil seal.

Regarding the Annapolis Boat Show, we will definitely be at the show but we are not sure if we will taking Cara or just driving.  It's such a zoo around there at that time and we can't take the days off work to get there early enough to be ensured of a decent anchoring spot.  Definitely let me know what the plans are as they develop!
