Re: Cleaning the fuel tank
Patrick McAneny
Eric, There is at least one port on the top of the tank. It has never been cleaned, and since there is only a few gallons in the tank I thought it was a good time . I am not interested in polishing or saving the fuel ,just want to suck out any water or sludge that may be in the tank. My filters have also be pretty clean when changed and I have never at fuel issues, but it seems like a good preventive exercise.
Another issue is my filter is about a foot above the bottom of the tank, so if my fuel level is below a foot and I change my filter, fuel will not fill the filter, and if I fill the filter, it simply flows back to the tank, so I am going to lower the filter as much as possible . I was wondering if most filters are installed as low as possible. If I ran out of fuel, I would have to put in probably forty gallons or more to get fuel up to my filter. I suppose a inline pump would solve this as well. Thanks,
Pat

Do you have inspection ports on your tank?
Why do you think you need to clean your tank?

Do you install a pump hose on the end of a length of 1/2 pcv tube and just move it around the bottom of the tank and see what comes out. Any suggestion on what type of pump.

Thanks Mark. It’s pretty much what I did except I used WD40 and did not spray at the same time as moving the arm up and down – maybe I should try that. Maybe I should use Corrosion X instead?

I had the same fault code with the last digit being "0". I was able to lube and free up the actuator. It could also indicate a bad sensor or another turbo related issue. Take a look at the attached and be sure to read the comments that I added at the time. Good luck with the repair. -- Cheers Paul Ya Fohi - Amel 54 #98

I just had mine professionally cleaned – it cost USD500 and took several hours with some pretty sophisticated looking gear, and involved negotiating baffles in the tank. Good luck!

Re: Volvo warning

I looked up fault code MID 128, SID 27, FMI 1 and it is something to do with the Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT). A Swedish forum said to WD40 and “exercise” the lever which I did but I still get the error (unlike the person on the forum with the same problem!).

Reference the attached pdf. It indicates that button to press is not the rotary button but the top left button. Good luck and let us know what fault code you find. -- Cheers Paul Ya Fohi - Amel 54 #98

Thanks Nick, I think I'll take your advice on that. I also tried the 7 sec (and longer) roto knob press as advised by Thomas from Garulfo, but nothing happened - maybe a different software version?

Grenada Marine were the Volvo agents but frankly were useless. The technician arrived but could not log into the Volvo network as he had not paid up! He then tried to tell me it was the alternator. Anyhow I decided it was some kind of sensor or the Turbo and continue in limp mode. When we arrived in Martinique, the excellent Volvo agent plugged in his diagnostic computer and it was the Boost sensor that he had in stock and changed there and then. Cost 420 euros. Re: How to clean the hull from diesel soot
Jim Anderson
Carina, I apologize but I got distracted when aboard last weekend and forgot to see which black streak remover product I have aboard. It is one of these two:
https://www.fisheriessupply.com/sitesearch.aspx?keyword=black%20streak%20remover&sitesearch=true On another note, in my opinion, which is likely to be well-disagreed with, if your engine is running well and properly maintained then unless you're trailing visible smoke in the air, the black streak is nothing to worry about. Diesel is dirty, exhaust is smoke and if our exhausts discharged from the transom instead of from the side nobody would notice. By way of example, I have a home that is heated by diesel (home heating oil) furnace. The manufacturer specifies that it is required to be cleaned annually and every year the technician says it's running perfectly as he cleans 2 gallons of soot from the exhaust.
