Jerome,

If a majority of members that respond want these photos removed, I
will delete them. I don't understand the publicity issue--Ivan
damaged all makes and kinds of yachts. However, if members are
sensitive in seeing damaged Amels, I'll delete the photos.

I really do not see why you posted the photo. It is sad and does
not
give any info : the name of the boat is not even indicated,
neither
the exact location. Morbidity is not the usual tone of this forum.
Plus it is bad publicity for AMEL: not very palatable for the Amel
lovers we are.

Eric,

There's a new folder with several photos. Another member posted the
lone photo of the Mango/Maramu/Sharki (not a Super Maramu).

Hi Eric,
The reason is that whilst we were taking delivery of the boat the
S/S strap aft of the turnbuckle buckled. Amel said that this was
because I had eased the halyard too much thus putting the whole
weight of the genoa plus the weight of the furling gear onto the
strap. They straightened it for me but when it happened again I
fitted the U bolt and solved the problem permanently.

It is possible that vibration from the propeller problem has
prematurely deformed the seal permanently to allow water in or (less
likely) that it allowed water in only when it was in the unbalanced
state.

There are several very good postings on replacing
the prop seal. They include, but are not limited to message 1156,

I am quite sure now that the problem was due to barnacle growth on
the propeller and not an engine problem. The time necessary to
increase the rpm has been decreased after use of the engine. It
seems that the blades came to the forward position more easily.

I saw also recently that the engine was not able to increase the
revolutions over 2500 rpm and by diving and cleaning the propeller
the engine was able to increase to 3000 so this has been explained.

Now I have a new problem. I found out during last week-end that
the
oil in the main engine drive has become white. I understand that
this means that sea water has entered the system. I was surprised
as
I had not a problem with a rope as I have also a rope cutter in
the
propeller shaft and I have checked one week end ago by diving that
everything was ok. How urgent it is to haul out the boat and
change
the oil? I do not see a big increase of the liquid height in the
jar
in the engine room.

I need your experience on that. I have to replace the brass ring

Hello Dimitiris,

I can say you that i had done about 100 hours of motor with the mix oil-water with out any problem. So i think that you can continue your trip, and wait for the next haul.
It is also possible to take out the mix whit a pump and a thin tube aspiring by the hole in which the litle tank is conected to the drive. In this way it is possible to take out two or three liters of the mix and replace it with fresh oil, waiting the total replacement and repair the rings.
I am sure that you have the same problem with the front propeller !
Have a good tripe in Greece where i will go with SILVIA ( sm 2000 ) this spring.

Thanks for the advise . I have already ordered the spare parts. My engine
hours are around 600 hours so I was planning to do it during the next haul
out in January. So you understand that I was surprised by the water in the
system as I have now to stop using the boat for a while. The temperature
today in Greece is 30 Degrees Celsius and it is really sad to have this
problem.

Hello Dimitris

What has happened is that your wearing bearing has worn out and has
allowed water to enter the U drive system. This is an item that
needs to be replaced every 800 hours and is not a difficult job for
a skilled person. The wearing bearing is right were the prop shaft
enters the gear housing. It is a brass ring with 3 rubber inserts.
Make sure that the inserts are oriented correctly. You should have
this repaired as soon as you can, as seawater is mixing with your U-
drive gears. Have the u-drive system flushed before adding the new
oil.

I hope this helps.

Hi Roy

I noticed your email about selling your sharki. I'd be interested in
seeing
any photos you might have. We lived on a Catalina 400 off the east coast
of
Australia for a couple of years up to two years ago and then sold her. We
are now looking for another yacht. We have been looking at Amels and a
Sharki may be what we are looking for. It sounds as though you have her
beautifully set up. Any information you can send me would be great to see.

I will be selling my 1985 Sharki shortly. She has brand new sails, new
Robertson autopilot [integrated with chartplotter]), new Raymarine color
Radar, Chartplotter with C-Map NT+++, depth/fishfinder at the helm and
chart
table, GPS, batteries, alternators, the Perkins 4-108 50hp diesel has less
that 100 hours after a complete rebuild, new Plexiglas, new lines, etc. I
was preparing to take her to the Bahamas and sail for the next few years.
But have had a change in health that prevents that now. She is located at
Kittery, Maine. If you are aware of anyone who might be interested let
them
know. Asking price is $129,900.00 U.S.
