Re: Front furler Bamar MEJ upgrade to EJF? Is it worth it?
Further to Porter’s review below – or the connection between the EJF and the aluminum furler.
I checked RECKMANN before ordering the 3rd set of BAMAR’s but the price difference was extreme.

The EJF is fantastic. Flawless operation and a pleasure to use. No belt. One just has to be careful, whereas the weakest link in the MEJ was the belt, the weakest link in the EJF may now be the deck hardware! A reckmann seems fine too, but were very happy with the EJFs after 15k+miles. Porter A54-152 IBIS

Hi Stefan,
I have, what I believe, the 3rd generation BAMAR. This version is NOT belt driven but gear driven. No problems at all – major improvement over the previous 2 versions.

Dear Ameliens,
I consider to change the genua furler (MEJ) to the newest BAMAR model (EFJ?) - if the technic is much better then the MEJ-modell (bad engineered + belts) . There where recently 2 belts broken (within 4 weeks, after 6 month of working fine) - not nice + lot of hard work. A thing that I do not wont to have again. Is in the new modell still a belt inside? What is your experience?
Or is it wiser to go directly to a Reckmann?

NavPilot Furuno 511 - Amel 54
Stefan Schaufert
Dear Ameliens, had anybody (potential?) problems with the autopilot like this?: Recently we had some error reports on the autopilot (NAVpilot Furuno 511). 2 times: the motor for the steering is „to hot“; I checked everything and found nothing but a red light at the end of the hydraulic cylinder - see attached.
May be the light has to be there, but I do not think so. What does it mean?

Thanks for the reply.
Which Amel do you have? If a 54, did you have to make any modifications or make changes to the attachment points on the 310 for a good fit and connection when pulled up?
On your reply to number 5, not sure what you mean by “chaps in both cases” Mohammad and Aty

Re: Carrying Tender on Davits while crossing
Hi Mohammad,
Coming back to your 5 questions, here are my 5 cents: 1. Good 2. The 340 works well on my Simpson Davits. I lift it with my 15HP Yamaha on. 3. I had the 340 on the sundeck without releasing the air, but it only fits angular 4. Offshore my 340 is not at the Davits. Why should I turn an extremely seaworthy boat into something risky? 5. Hypalon. Chaps in both cases! Hope that helps., Alex

Re: Size of main anchor for Super Maramu
A couple of unsolicited thoughts on the Mantus bridle and equipment:
We purchased the 3/4” bridle version when we first started cruising. It was used maybe twice. I stopped using it because the double bridles become very twisted and removing the bridle becomes a difficult task. At anchor when the winds are light and the boat drifts about, or if the boat swings with the current the lines will twist. Also the lines are very long. If you let out the full length of the bridle, you will find you have more rope than chain out defeating the purpose of having an all chain rode. Of course, you do not need to let out the full bridle but then you are not taking advantage of the chafing guards.
The Mantus chain hook bracket is too large to go over the bow roller. To affix it and remove it one has to hang off the side of the boat and reach down to the chain. This may not seem like a big deal until you need to get the anchor up quickly. This device is now stowed the same place with the bridle. Instead I went the low tech route. I tie a rolling hitch with my 25’ snubber. The snubber is 1” Buccaneer Medallion 8-Strand Plait Nylon Rope offering superior shock absorbency and abrasion resistance. The tensile strength is 31,000 lbs. This has served us well.
With best regards,
Mark

Re: Amel water cooled refrigeration & Frigoboat/Fowjet saltwater pump
Hi Bill,
Just to put some additional pictures with your story The original pump as found on our Amel (hull 121) is the one in picture 1. It has the code A092819C like the one you specified. Our boat had indeed 2 pumps mounted next to each other, looking quite sad at the time we bought the boat. These are indeed a rebadged Flojet pump. When I ordered the new pumps from Frigoboat, I received the pump in picture 2 and 3. It has the code R4105343 and Frigoboat put a sticker over it with a serial number and a notification the pump runs on 12 Volt. As you can see it is a 24 Volt pump that they use at 12 Volt. That seemed a good idea at the time but nine moths in the tropics caused the commutator to look like picture 4. The copper is completely worn away and the pump is beyond repair. According to Flojet this is an intermittent duty pump. I tried using a brushless mag-drive pump using about 1.3 Amps @ 12 Volt but these are centrifugal pumps that simply do not deliver enough pressure to overcome the resistance in the pipes to produce a decent flow. I’ve been told you need at least 6 liters per minute to keep the compressors happy. I’m now using the Flojet pump you mention as well, the 4105-512 accepting for now the pump will need replacement quite frequently. I admire the work that Oliver did with replacing the insulation of the freezer cabinet. That seems by far the best thing to do for the tropics. Also replacing the motor of the Flojet pump with a brushless motor seems a very good idea. These two modifications would solve 80% of the problem. The remainder ideally would be solved by using a circulation system with heat radiators on the underside of the boat. and using coolant liquid as circulation fluid. But that would mean additional holes in the boat and all the rest, But for now my first action is to get a brushless motor for the Flojet pump-head. Cheers, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Amel water cooled refrigeration & Frigoboat/Fowjet saltwater pump
As owners of water-cooled Frigoboat refrigeration are aware, the Frigoboat 12 volt saltwater pump marked VECO A092319C is actually made by Flojet and is a Flowjet 4105-512 12 volt seawater pump. Owners are also aware that in many cases this pump is proven to have a life of about 1 year, but this depends mostly on the seawater environment where the boat is used. Amel first installed this pump in the Amel 54 and actually mounted a spare pump next to the working pump in order that the owner had a replacement when the first pump failed. Some owners have tried the MARCO UP2/P 10 l/min. In most cases, this has proven to be a poor choice and although I thought the UP2/P was a good choice and MARCO's distributor in the US told me it was a good choice. I am afraid it is not. MARCO told us this week that the UP2/P is not a "continuous duty" pump. As you know there is a message Topic in our group that has about 100 postings regarding a revolutionary replacement for this pump. Unfortunately, it seems that the vast majority of members don't completely understand one member's description of this revolutionary solution. I certainly do not have enough information to duplicate it. My suggestion is to continue with the Flowjet 4105-512 12 volt seawater pump until we can assure a better solution, and to avoid the MARCO solution.

Re: Insurance for a USA boat
About a year and a half ago, we insured Cream Puff with Y-Yacht in the UK
after Pantaenius rewrote the Caribbean policy to a point of being ridiculous. Many people spoke very highly of Y-Yacht and so far, so good. We are not US flagged and therefore have more options than US flagged vessels. I do not believe Y-Yacht will insure a US flagged boat. During our search for insurance, I was also impressed with Novamar. However, I think they are in the process of changing. TopSail in the UK may or may not write a policy on a US Flagged vessel. I get mixed reports on this. If you join the OCC you can get a discount on TopSail insurance. The Jackline policy was stupid expensive. And besides, the point of contact was so rude I walked away after receiving the quote. You should also be aware they will require a full out of water survey. They will not settle for a valuation survey. This is will cost you about an extra $1,000 upfront if you do not have a current acceptable survey. Our insurance from Y-Yacht was about $2300 less per year for the same coverage in the same area. (neither TopSail or Y-Yacht required a survey - Both just wanted some current pictures of the vessel and were specific about the photos required) Quite so time ago, I looked at a Florida based company. Owners and residents of Florida have a hard time getting boat insurance. There is an association who hunts for A-rated companies and offers insurance at reasonable rate. You have to join the association for the insurance but not for a quote. Here is a link: https://www.nboat.com/boat-insurance/florida/ If someone has a decent agent, please share. Agents hunt for companies at no cost to the insuree. They get a commission from the companies when they refer and write a policy. Agents can save you a ton of legwork. I had a good experience with this agent: Chris Boome Insurance Agency LIC# 0A99058 751 Laurel Street #216 San Carlos, CA 94070 O: 650-517-3160 C: 650-464-0728 WWW.CHRISBOOME.COM E-mail: chris@chrisboome.com Think globally when it comes to boat insurance. The US dollar is very favorable to other currencies and can yield a nice discount when purchasing insurance in Euros for example. Pantaenius offices around the world work as individual companies. It might be possible to get Pantaenius insurance from an office other than PantaeniusUSA. If your vessel is outside of the USA, it may be possible to get a policy from other reputable companies in the world. One of the most popular companies for vessels in the Pacific using A-rate underwriters is The Marine Shop: https://www.marine-insurance.co.nz/ Hope this helps. I am a new owner and just purchased in December 2019. Pantaenius gave me a very reasonable quote and insured my boat for US east coast. Policy dates effective Dec 19-Dec 2020.
I wonder what the terms will be for renewal or if they will even offer a renewable policy. Thanks, Doug Smith Amel 54-113, Aventura Dugsmith98@yahoo.com

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] C Drive Photos
HI Mitchell - my pleasure; glad it helped.
Regarding the design, one of my pictures show the manufacturers label on the upper unit - it was CATEP France with a Model and serial number. A google search brings up CATEP International. and I'd guess they supplied the entire unit. Amel clearly changed the specification along the way, as some of us have Aluminum housing and others steel. By the way, are you fixing a particular issue just doing PM? Regardless, if you get into a need for parts CATEP may be where to start. Cheers,
