Hi, Here are some photos of my conversion. For some reason I can’t find a photo of the reefer complete. I installed a welded stainless steel tub inside the refrigerator. I will try to remember to take photos with the tub installed. The reefer keeps drinks incredibly cold and holds about 8- 6 packs of beverages, The photo of the thin circuit breaker mounted on an aluminum strip is for the reefer. I used the wires running from the AC panel to the dishwasher and this was a great spot to mount the breaker as it is so close to the AC panel. Fair Winds Eric Amel Super Maramu #376

KALI MERA is from 1995 and still has the original headliner, no signs of getting loose. Does the new material look different? Can anyone post a picture from the old / new material?

Hi everyone;
Since we are on the subject of the headliner issues on the older Amels, I’d like to address some issues we are having on our A54, hoping for a good solution from someone who has tackled it.
On Kokomo, we have certain areas, mainly in the corners and inside the cabinets in the master, that the headliner sags or the corners are peeling off. We can get it to reattach by sliding our hand on it and pushing it back up, but this will repeat, within a day or two. The amount of area of sag is not significant and mainly out of sight, so it has not been a priority. However, we would like to address it, before it becomes worse.
Anyone else had this issue? All suggestions, would be appreciated.

Thanks for checking your notes to see what you could find. As I have time, I will do some digging and if I can find out what Amel is now using that works. While the loose liner is a bit of an eyesore, at least this is not a problem that keeps me from sailing my boat, Amel seemed to do a good job on the things that matter the most. Hi Ofer,
Do you know where the leakage was from, other than "the inside part of the water heater"? Having had 5 tanks fail in the 5 years since you got the boat is pretty amazing. Have you asked the factory or your mechanic what the problem has been? Was it the same for all 5 heaters? If you have an interest in chasing this down yourself you can take off the decorative SS jacket of a failed unit, then remove the insulation jacket, fill the tank and turn it on and perhaps see exactly where the "inside part" is leaking. You'll want it to get hot since it may only leak when it's hot. As Yogi Berra said, "You can observe a lot by looking around". I did see a post on another db that Isotemp had to redesign the thermostat circuitry of the Basic model because the heating coil wasn't being shut off and that caused overheating that distorted the tank, but that doesn't sound like your issue. Years ago I had leakage from the bottom of my tank from pin holes of corrosion from particles of heating elements that had broken off when I replaced them. I cleaned them out and patched with JB Weld years ago. Certainly not your problem with brand new units repeatedly failing (mine is now 15 years old). Good luck with it, Craig Craig

Just an FYI I have a 2008 54 and there is some saging in the headliner. the back is still sticky so with my hand it is easy to push back up but this needs doing about every month.

Hello James. I did some digging around in old notes regarding Amel production during that time. The previous vinyl with the polyurethane foam was trade named Skai and still has a presence in the marine market according to a quick internet search. Perhaps they now make a marine vinyl with felt/cotton backing as the safety rules governing using polyurethane have changed over the years. If they have a suitable material, I’m sure the distributor could recommend an adhesive.
Sorry to say I could find no mention of the replacement material. I seem to recall someone at the shipyard in La Rochelle mentioning that it was Naugahyde, but that term gets used a lot generically and not always describing the exact brand of Naugahyde. I have used Naugahyde for other projects and it could be a good replacement if you can find a color-texture match. They were pretty strict when it comes to what adhesives to use and they only recommend their own branded adhesives.
During my digging, I found that quite possibly some boats from the 1995 production year may have used the new overhead as the exact break was loosely described as around 1996 production which means September 1995 forward. They still had some of the old headliner when the new arrived so….
Perhaps Olivier might know but beyond that, I’m out of luck.

I do wonder if there is much difference between soda and other dry materials. For what it's worth we had our hull cleaned with dry sand in the UK when the boat was 10 years old. The old paint was taken off within a few hours and the hull looked as though
it had just come out of the mould. So perfect was the gelcoat that it needed a light abrasion before a couple of layers of clear epoxy were put on. In our case that was sufficient as we then put on Coppercoat, itself an epoxy.

Last week I contacted the large Hinckley repair yard in Portsmouth, RI and it turns out that they do not have access to soda blasting either and use the same glass blasting contractor used by the full service marina where Sabbatical III is stored. Hinckley
recommends the glass blasting followed by 5 coats of epoxy (the 5 coats is their rule for European boats). My yard has suggested 3 coats of epoxy as a water barrier.
I had been hoping for soda blasting plus a single coat of epoxy as a primer, on the assumption that the barrier coat under the gel coat would remain intact. I did not expect that it would not be possible to find a soda blasting contractor in Rhode Island
(or nearby Massachusetts) who works on boat hulls.
Any suggestions for me? I feel stuck and am inclined to use glass blasting following by 3 or more coats of epoxy as a barrier coat.

Hydrovane works excellently for us on SeaLove I think the bigger of the WindPilot range (the pacific 2?) also works on the same principles - ie you lock your rudder and the vane takes over probably excellent also If you decide to exchange for a hydrovane i'd happily send some photos of our install Libertad of this forum was kind enough to share his similar instal photos - infact i think they are still on the hydrovane website - search maramu All the best Miles

If you have a leak on the suction side it will allow air to enter the water pipes and this won't compress enough to reach the shut off pressure.

Few month after buying my boat in 2015, i had a leakage from the inside part of the water heater. I bought a new one from isotherm ,the same model -basic 40. Since then , 3 more boilers were leaking and replaced under warranty by the factory- very good service, but what can be the reason for the failure of 4 boilers in 5 years? The pressure in the water system is 1-2.5 bar. The heater has a security valve that opens in 7 bar. Anyone experienced this? Ideas welcome. Thanks to the great group! hi there Martin I am a big fan of windvanes and put one on our maramu last year on my old boat (30ft) we had a monitor this time we chose a hydrovane as we used on on a family boat before and they are really good The monitor will require lines lead to the wheel - which i'm sure will work but will need some thought i mainly went for the hydrovane as it does not drive the main rudder. you lock the main rudder off and the hydrovane takes over - so acts as a completely separate and spare rudder system which was a big draw for us on long haul journeys as a back up we routed the hydrovane pole through our swim step and that worked well. We also bought the longer shaft version so the whole vane part was positioned just level with our solar arch. The monitor rudder swings side to side as it steers - so i'm sure youve been thinking about how that might work with your swim platform We have stopped using the electric autopilot for all but motoring (which we avoid if at all possible) it was such a relief to get rid of the noise of the electric autopilot and its inherent complexity The SM have a wonderful redundant autopilot system so i can totally understand that for SMs a Windvane might be overkill but once you have sailed across an ocean with a windvane silently helming for weeks on end its hard to entertain anything else - wonderful inventions.
