As a member of a small cruising club looking at the possibility of buying an Amel Santorin as a replacement for a Beneteau 361. Some members have raised a number of questions that I hope that members of the Amel owners association can help me with, namely
1. Has anyone replaced a Perkins Prima M50 and if they have with what type of engine
2. Are there any problems with osmosis with santorins
3. The leak from the bow thruster seems to be a common problem has it ever proved catastrophic and has it been rectified .
Having sailed on a Santorin, I found that the versatility and quality of the boat, most suited our club, and with what I have read on this site has just re- inforced
my belief that the Santorin is the way to go for my club.

Mark,

My wife and I cruised thru the South Pacific from 1985 thru 1987
(not on our Amel but our first sailboat which was a 37' Searunner
trimaran). I believe that to navigate successfully among the coral
heads you'll have to rely mainly on your eyeballs. Since the waters
will be very clear, getting a bit aloft in the rig would be great.
Here are also a couple of other points to consider:
1. Have polarized sunglasses on to help see thru the glare of the
water surface.
2. Time your entrance thru the reef pass so that the sun is high
overhead, or even better, when the sun is bit behind you. Also
applies to traveling inside the lagoons.
3. Glassly or calm seas make it pretty hard to see what's below the
surface.
4. Atolls with passes on their east side may be especially dangerous
due to the unimpeded ocean swells hitting the outgoing tidal stream.
You may want to pick the islands/atolls that have entrances on the
northern or western side for an easier go. For example, Raiora in
the Tuamotus was easy as was Suvarov in the Cooks.
5. Time your entrance with the tide to minimize the ebb current flow
you'll be fighting at the pass. I don't think many (if any) atolls
have flood tides--just varying strengths of ebb tides.
6. Remember that if the water ahead of you is brownish (it's a coral
head) then expect to see less than 3 feet of water.
7. I have uploaded in the FILES section an article from an old Ocean
Navigator that covers coral reef navigation.

We saw no shortage of wind anywhere in the Pacific (other than off
the Mexican mainland coast in winter). I don't think you'll have to
worry about motoring across!

Mark,
My wife and I used an improvised rope ladder attached to the
starboard shrouds, to enable the reef watcher to stand on the
reinforcing bar for the bracket that holds the ballooner poles. This
worked reasonably well and gets the watcher 8 feet or so above the
deck.

I was concerned about reports that it might be necessary to motor
from Panama to Galapagos and decided to carry an extra 100 gallons of
diesel in 20 of 5 gallon "Jerry" jugs. They were cheap to buy from
West Marine. We initially stowed 8 jugs in the stern locker with 12
lashed on deck – 6 on each side at the stern. We never did need all
of this fuel and gave away 8 of the jugs in the Marquise Islands. We
now typically stow 10 jugs in the stern locker with two on deck and
we throw these two into the stern locker as soon as they are emptied.
Most refueling in the South Pacific was by dinghy and Jerry Jug -
making bladder use problematic. We found that 5 gallon Jugs are
reasonably easy to handle in and out of a dinghy by one person. Two
additional advantages are 1) you can see what quantity of fuel you
are receiving (the Jugs are marked in both gallons and liters)
instead of trusting the supplier and 2) You can filter every drop of
fuel going into the main tank. If you purchase the large size Baja
filter from West Marine, it fits exactly into the fuel filler on the
SM and rests stably on the mizzen deck. We found it very simple to
refuel at sea by sitting on the starboard cockpit bench and pouring
the fuel directly into the Baja filter with the Jerry jug held in the
lap. No siphons etc. No spilled fuel. Refuel in a seaway.

Eric and others, The American equivalent of polytrol is Penetrol, it can be bought in any big paint store,not home depot or Lowes.It is used to thin paint, but if you read the label it will tell you it restores fiberglass. It really works great on the faux teak decks and the whole job can be done in an hour. It doesn't work as well on the smooth fiberglass. For a really old Amel with decks beyond repair their is a product called marine deck 2000. Look it up on google. Its an absolutley fabulous material made of cork of all things. It looks exactly like teak decking and can be used inside or out. I just put a cork floor in my kitchen and I really like it. Once your deck is looking like new, buy a pint of 100% grain alcohol and an ear syringe . polyurethane paint (50% brown, 50% black). It took 6 days at 3 hours
per day for the decks, and 2 days for the cockpit. After letting the
paint dry for a few days, we coated all the surfaces with Polytrol, a
French product recommended by Mr. Selo at Amel. The decks look like
new. The picture of the re-painted forward deck areas show before-and-
after of applying Polytrol.

We bought the Polytrol at Acastillages Diffusion (AD), a shipchandler
in Hyeres, France. They have a web site. I don't know if the
product is available in US, but probably in Caribbean (St. Martin or

John, Inboom furling is the best way to go on a re-fit. It will give you more sail area,more roach,better shape,and a much better performing boat. It is expensive,you will need a new boom and you will have to fabricate a tract for your slides over the existing slot in your old mast. Inboom furling is the wave of the future. In case of any failure all you do is raise and lower the sail same as we used to do. You can also place full length battens in the sail. Amel will eventually install it on their boats, the price will go up, but so will the performance. Also remember that in a blow you want to bring the center of effort down low when you reef, inboom furling realy does this.
