Hi,
The euro must be killing you. I haul the boat every year and do the bottom and replace the wearing out bearing in the saildrive. I have not had such problems. What are you doing? Not nearly as much fun as 4 years ago. We did have to go and Amel here to haul the boat and replace the prop shaft seals. Other then that we are doing well. How are things on your end. Will you be over this way any time soon. Volvo engine revs
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
Hi Pat, for some reason I can't forward the email I thought I had forwarded even though my Sent box shows it as having been sent successfully. You will find it dated 14 March 2006. It gives revs/speed for the whole range of revs. Cheers, Ian

FW: [Amel Yacht Owners] Autoprops and revs
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
Hi Pat, To me your speed for revs sounds a trifle slow, but not by much. Amel govern the engine speed on your rengine to 2800 revs to produce 60hp ( otherwise it can rev higher to produce 78 hp but at huge cost in diesel). I have found it a very economical engine to use with sufficient power.
Below I copy an email I posted in March 2006 in response to a query as to whether the Autoprop fitted by Amel was the right one and in which I record the speed/revs that we achieved with a very fully laden boat in calm conditions. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] autohelm ST 7001
Richard Piller <richard03801@...>
Hi, thanks for the note. Yes you can have issues with the rudder shaft seal leaking. Pull off the rudder bracket, remove the plastic nut, use a ice pic to pull out the old packing install new greased packing and tighten the nut. DO KILL the nut. install the bracket and off you go... buy a big adjustable wrench from Defender or West to use on the nut.. over the next few sails it may leak a bit more. Just tightent the nut on hex position at a time until it stops. Good luck, Richard and Joan on Challenge on Corica

Annsofie <kanalmamman@...>
Hi Pat
I think your rpm/speed is quite normal. We have a Max prop and a TMD22b and have almost the same rpm/speed. Except that we can get 3300 rpm and just above 9 knots. Re: autohelm ST 7001
Dave_Benjamin
Giovanni,
I am quite new to owning a Maramu but in other boats I've owned I've found that sailing very deep angles, especially dead downwind is less efficient than sailing a slightly higher angle and periodically gybing. In some boats I've been able to get by just fine with just a jib or genoa in the those conditions so the gybes were much easier without having to deal with the main. Next time we're going down the coast I'll check out the VMG and do some experimenting. Sorry I can't be of more assistance. --- In amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com, "eutikia2003" <gtesta23@...> wrote:

yes, the RPM could today be rised over 3300rpm. It is a greate difference in power and the engine feels as new! Will do the same on my Onan this winter. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] autohelm ST 7001
Richard Piller <richard03801@...>
When running down wind in those kinds of wind we layout about 100 meters of heavy line with about 5 kg of chain as a weight. This forms a big "U" behind the boat does not slow it much BUT dose hold it to the sea and Autopilot can do it's job. If the seas and wind conditions are such we add an old car tire to slow the boat. We wrap the tire with a chain and use a line with a thimble to stop and rope wear. It works it is not a work of art but it works well. We have also used the tire to keep us off a cement dock with a board and then bumpers. That works well too.

There are a number so sources in the US for rebuilt gear boxes that will work.

Doug Russell com comes to mind as a source. They are outside of Boston and ship world wide. Use the "perkins" guy in Gib to change it out. Best of luck Richard and Joan on Challenge SM 209

Re: autohelm ST 7001settings
Aras Grinius <n33077@...>
With my 7000, the autopilot does not lie running seas. The computer cannot keep up with those types of sea conditions. I find "playing the repsonse time" does help. Depends on on the period of the waves too.

Re: autohelm ST 7001settings
edmund_steele
Hi Giovanni,
I will describe our experiences with SM#331 and assume that you have similar equipment. In the conditions you describe, we have found that you need to switch the autohelm drives to the linear drive that operates directly on the rudder quadrant. This unit seems to respond faster than the chain driven / wheel mounted drive unit. Next switch the "response" setting on the control unit to a "high" setting. Whenever this unit is turned on, it automatically goes to a response setting of "5". In light winds or motoring I will typically set the value to perhaps "2". When maneuvering in tight spaces under autopilot control, I use a fast response setting, such as "7" and will set this to maximum under the conditions you describe. You cannot make an autopilot anticipate a large wave but you can at least have the steering respond quickly to avoid getting into a broach situation. I have run with goosewinged main and poled Genoa with 30 knots from the stern but under these conditions there is no stiffening component in the wind to damp a side to side roll. For this reason I may de-rig the pole if I feel there is a risk of submarining the pole-end on a roll. With a really strong wind you will probably not need the pole anyway, in order to hold the reefed Genoa in shape. Fair Winds, Ed Steele SV DoodleBug

Re: {Disarmed} Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Volvo/Autoprop not making rated RPM..advice please
John and Anne Hollamby <annejohn@...>
Have you checked the prop? It depends on being perfectly clean to set its pitch correctly.
If it is fouled by growth it stays at coarse pitch and the engine cannot rev up to full speed when it is in gear. I have the Yanmar 70HP and it will rev up to 3400 when clean and when it was really fouled after a winter afloat it could only manage 1500 RPM. Regards, Johnand Anne, SM319
