I've installed a Weems & Plath electronic barometer; it'll show hour
by hour pressure history for up to 48 hours, in addition to other
features. Even has a icon of a sailboat heeled over that'll be
displayed if the pressure drops too rapidly. See at weems-plath.com.

Has anyone attempted to raise the heighth of their dodger? We are
thinking of raising it approx. 6 inches by cutting above the window
and raising. New windows required and would improve forward view and
the starboard window would open.

Managed to use a friends cleaning solution on my membranes. They have 1400 hours on them and were putting out 2240 TDS . !/2 hour alkali, 1/2 hr rinse then 1/2 hr acid and 1/2 hr rinse, rinse in both cases in chlorine free fresh water. I was surprised at how little volume the high pressure pump puts through when merely circulating water at zero pressure. I would judge it at no more than 100 lph.However,put your finger over the output pipe and the pressure built up ok
Having finished the fresh water rinse I then reconnected the hoses and ran at low pressure for an hour and then tried to use the pump in earnest. Nothing happened. Couldnt raise any pressure at all. No hissing noise, nothing.
Thought that it might be an airlock somewhere, this being the season of airlocks on Pen Azen ( see my Volvo airlock emails last month). So I disconnected the in and out pipes on the high pressure pump and ran it , several times. Still nothing. About to deep six the damn thing when I tried sucking through a pipe connected to the output tap on the Dessalator board in the galley. Then ran the pump for about 15 mins at low pressure and then at max pressure. Very gradually the pressure built and after a few false starts ( when the pressure was very uneven and cut out about 5 times) the pump settled down and started to produce at about 35 lph.Ran it for about an hour and then caught the product in 5 litre cans. The first tested at over 2000 TDS but the next 5 tested at 960! A result!It will do till our new membranes arrive ( Argentinian customs permitting). Anyone else had experience of cleaning membranes with cleaning fluid?
Just goes to show what you can do with your time when winds up to 45k keep you on board at anchor for 4 days, in our case directly upwind , 125 metres, from The World and The Rotterdam which have to be two of the worlds largest passenger liners ( The World being privately owned condos). I just know that if we dragged we would sink them both. I cant believe they are a match for an Amel. Better not tell my insurers.
Ushuaia at Xmas has about ten yachts about to leave for Antarctica, including Wanderer 111, the 50 year old , wooden, carvel built , 30 foot boat that used to belong to the Hiscocks and has done about 300,000 miles at sea including 5 circumnavigations. I asked Tees, her German owner ( had her 25 years) how much fuel he has. Well, he explained, in the main tank we have 20 litres.... but on a trip like this we do carry an extra 40 litres in jerries Thats OK then.....
Lent him our sewing machine to patch his old sails ( must be 25 years old tho he does have new ones as well). Makes you rather humble...

Dear Gary, As I recall the od of the main pipe is 1-1/2 ,the engine is 1-1/4 od,and the gen set and a/c is 1 inch each. The 2 toilets are 1/2 inch id or 5/8 od. I think thats right. If you make a new one you should make it out of copper nickle which you can't find except in 20 ft. lengths. If you do find a source for it,(small pieces) please let me know. I made mine out of stainlees steel twice. The first welder didn't know you are surpose to blow a special type of gas in the pipe while welding stainless steel for under water use. Lots of luck John

however I did not receive the membranes yet and I am

NZ to Falmouth by sea and Miami to Montevideo air freight---and worth every penny.We can launch it by hand form the aft deck and retrieval is a cinch compared to our bullet proof but HEAVY Carib. Hello Ian and Judy,
Sorry for my delay in replying but I have been away.
My dinghy is a Southern Pacific Shearwater 310 and it is great. It is
now five years old and looks like new despite the fact that it has
been exposed all that time to the strong Meditteranean sun.Another
plus point is that it has three airchambers which our previous AB did
not and it is therefore much less dangerous when, as happened to us in
the Tuamotus, a shark took a bite out of the fabric the size of my hand.
It is fitted with a Mercury 15hp motor with small hydrofoils on the
skeg and will do 24 knots with only my 100 kgs on board in flat water.
It also finally got up on the plane with three heavy adults and a lot
of shopping in choppy water.
It cost much less than any European RIBs when we bought it and if the
price has not gone up I would expect it to be competitive in price
even including air freight. The lightweight is great for lifting it
out onto deck. We will post a pic of it (in the SM319 album)deflated
on the aft cabin top,later today.

On short passages with good forecasts it is carried on the Amel davits
which can be seen in the pic of my liferaft carrier in the Bali Hai
album. It is essential to lash it down firmly so that it is not thrown
around in a seaway. On very short passages we sometimes hoist the
dinghy and engine on the davits by using the passurelle halyard
clipped on to the davit at the engine end.On longer passages it is
carried inflated but inverted on top of the aft cabin because I am
mindful of the fact that no long time survival in a liferaft has been
recorded without a dinghy being used at the same time for stores etc.
I also recall the experience of an American family whose yacht was run
down at night in bad weather by a ship. The boy went down with the
boat but the couple and the young daughter found themselves in the sea
with their AB dinghy which popped up to the surface as the yacht
disintegrated.
Sadly the father and daughter perished but the mother survived after
the dinghy was blown ashore in NZ. It seems that the father went into
the water to save the daughter and then was unable to get back into
the dinghy. For this reason it is suggested that it is essential to
have a rope tied to the handles either side of the hull with one or
two knots in the scope so that a person in the water has something to
pull themself into the boat.
The ship was traced in Taiwan and in the subsequent case the widow
accepted undisclosed damages in an agreed settlement. It seems that
she was on watch alone when they were run down and she claimed that it
was her practice to go around the deck every 15 minutes to make sure
all was well! We were within 30 miles of them at the time and with
very strong winds and waves there is no way I would even think about
getting out of the cockpit. The other stupid thing that came up was
that they only used their radar when within 12 miles of the coast.
One of the perils of GPS is that people set a course on their
autopilot connecting two set points which are probably being used by
every other vessel thus ensuring maximum exposure to being rundown.

We made the mistake using the microwave with 60hz...it will work, but
it will shorten the life of the microwave. The breaker would trip
whenever we attempted to use the microwave longer than about 5
minutes. The turntable in our microwave stopped working after using it
with 60hz for a very short time. The dishwasher and clothes washing
machine also should not be operated on 60hz. The A/C has not problems
with 60hz or 50hz.
