Michael,
I have a SM, vintage 1997 (hull # 195). But I believe the seals
did not change for the SM2000. On my boat, the seals are CORTECO I1
45-65-8 (45mm inner diameter, 65mm outer diameter, 8mm thickness).
Other markings on the seals are: BAU4 (I think that means they are
made of nitrile), and CFW (the manufacturer, Freudenberg-cFw).

I have been trying to locate a US source of these seals for some
time, with little success. I e-mailed the German manufacturer, their
US representative, and the Italian distributor, with no answer. I
have contacted local and national distributors of metric seals, also
with no luck. So, if you have any luck, please post your source.

Eric, I agree the whole assembly needs to be replaced at one
time. However, I mangled one of the seals a bit upon insertion last
time, so I would like a couple of spares.

If someone has info on the SM2000 shaft seals (whether they are
the same or different from those described above), please post it.

Thanks, Roy Benveniste, SM "Excalibur"

Michael,

You also need the wearing out bearing on which the seals fit.

Therefore, you have to order the whole thing from Amel.

The wearing out bearing is just a bronze tube with a lip but it is made by
Amel.

I am about to replace the main and mizzen sail on my SM 140. I would
like to have the new sails made with vertical battens (either full
length or short ones like the Amel 54). Has anyone out there fitted
sails like this to a SM and if so is there any problems with the sails
catching during furling and unfurling or merely fitting into the masts
when furled? Has any one any recommendation of sail makers that have
fitted these sails to a SM? I am hoping that by getting some roach
into the main and mizzen this will help improve light air performance.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Gearbox for outhaul stopped working

Graham Boyd

I also did this job on my SM140. I got 2 new gear boxes from Amel
which on the second lot of postage were the correct ones. Like Udo
getting the shaft out was rather tricky. I replaced both the outhaul
and the mainsail furler gear boxes. The out haul one had packed up
completely, and I changed the furler one "on spec". As I removed it
it fell to bits due to corrosion! I too am now looking for new sails.

been a
nice easy swap out, except the shaft would not come out of the old
gear
box. We had to press it out in the shop. After that it was pretty
straight forward. The gears were well worn in the old gear box and
I am
currently looking into rebuilding it to keep as a spare. I also had
another spare motor rebuilt and that was pretty easy. If possible I
would go with new parts from Amel. I also chose to go with a new
sheave
on top of the shaft, since the old one looked pretty worn and the
outhaul line was slipping. That led me to a new outhaul line and
now I
am thinking of getting a new mainsail because the old one looks bad
compared to all the other nice parts.

Hello all,

Yesterday while using the Shipmate 8300 VHF radio it just stopped
working. I downloaded the owners manual from the net, but it does
not offer the answer I need.

The display shows the radio in the 1W mode and where the channel
should be displayed there are two " _ _ " and that is all. The
radio will change from US to INT, volume and squelch work, it will
switch to intercom mode, the DSC will acept programing (I do not
have
the GPS interface to VHF). All in all everything seems to be
working
except that I cannot put in a channel and Transmit. When trying to
put in a channel I get a message on the display that says ERROR.
Of
course the manual does not address this. Also the radio will not
toggle between the low and high power setting.

Has anyone ever come accross this? Do you know where I might go to
get an answer?

As always, thanks a bunch for your help.

Electronics,SSB,FLS and autopilots

John and Anne on Bali Hai <annejohn@...>

Hello Frank,
The first thing to do is to put SSB in the search box and go back to
early messages when this was discussed in some detail. There is no
best SSB only the most expensive one!!! I Emailed ICOM UK years ago
and the technician told me that there is really no advantage to SSB
versus Ham sets aprt from the fact that a marine radio licence is
easier to get whilst the ham licence requires a bit of study. Suffice
to say that when I got mt Amel I fitted the Icom that I had taken off
my dreadful Oyster but bought a ham radio as well in the light of my
experience in the Pacific.
I have an Echopilot FLS which I also brought from the Oyster only
because it cost a lot of money andadded nothing to the saleability of
that boat. The problem with them is that they only work to the
claimed ranges if the bottom is rocky of the end is a harbour wall.
On most bottoms the signal bounces off into the far yonder and gives
little useful info over a normal echosounder. Additionally if you are
travelling at a speed over one knot or not concentrating the warning
of a rock ahead will come far too late. If you are in a current
moving you towards the hazzard the instrment is useless. Do the
arithmatic..time taken to cover forty yards at one ,two or three
knots! Where it can be useful is at very low speed trying to miss
coral heads but at such times your crew will be looking down over the
bow. It would be useful in coral in the dark but you should not be
there at that time.
If I were going to cross the Pacific again I would carry a spare
course computer as well as having two drive units. The latter are
very hard working and are not really built for long distance sailing.
The ST6000 we had had nylon? gears in the linear drive with a life of
about 10,000 miles.Bronze gears were available at ten times the cost
but Olivier assured us that the bronze ones are used by Amel. You
would be well advised to take spare brushes for the drive motors
as they only last about 30-40,000miles before they are badly worn
and the motor stops working because the carbon dust in the motor
housing results in the signal no power on the computer. This happened
to us when we were in Fiji and Raymarine were outstandingly useless
when they told us that they had changed their motor suppliers and had
no spare brushes for our six year old unit omitting to tell us how to
get in touch with their previous motor supliers!

Good luck and good sailing, Anne and John SM319

Frank, we have hull 209 and just finished installing a
new electronics package;

The SSB we choose is an Icom 810 with the 140 tuner.
We used the Amel wip ant. We also bought a Pactor III
USB modem for email and weather.

The Raymarine chain drive is great we used it for
several crossings. We do however ALSO have a linear
drive unit as back up. it is there is not as much
noise at the helm when it's used.
And yes, you will need the heading device and gyro
unit.

We chose the Furuno radar chart plotter and GPS as we
can use C-Map charts that we favor. They interfaced
to the Auto Pilot without issue.

Given how we use the boat an AIS receiver was added
that in connected to Icom 504 which is wired to the
GPS. We choose the 504 for two reasons one is DSC the
other is the fog horn. It all works well.

Defender supplied all the Electronics. Let me know if
you need more help.

Good luck and fairwinds.

I am currently looking to fit the following in my
SM2000.

I have tried Amel's electronics installers but had
no response.
I am looking for recommendations / advice from
members on the
following as electronics is not my bag.

SSB Radio

a) the best radio to go for ( UK licence )

b) type of aerial to use and where to locate it

Satellite Phone

What make/ type to go for in terms of features,
charge rates - is it the 'Mini M' ?

F/wd facing echopilot - through hull sonar

In members experience how good/effective are these
? Best to go for ?

2nd Raymarine ST7000 Autopilot

to include, fluxgate, computer, rotary chain
drive, control panel, and rudder angle with switch
to ensure both systems cannot be on at same time.

In members experience do I need to go for this
second autohelm; how reliable is the principle
ST7000?

My need for internet and e-mail at reasonable
speed is also critical in the above considerations

Any help on some or all of the above will be much
appreciated.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Shipmate 8300 VHF

Hi Tony, We had exactly the same problem.Went to a Simrad agent in Brazil who said the software needed updating but despite his efforts the radio has never worked properly since . Eventually swapped it for another Simrad but should have chosen something much cheaper.

Hello all,

Yesterday while using the Shipmate 8300 VHF radio it just stopped
working. I downloaded the owners manual from the net, but it does
not offer the answer I need.

The display shows the radio in the 1W mode and where the channel
should be displayed there are two " _ _ " and that is all. The
radio will change from US to INT, volume and squelch work, it will
switch to intercom mode, the DSC will acept programing (I do not have
the GPS interface to VHF). All in all everything seems to be working
except that I cannot put in a channel and Transmit. When trying to
put in a channel I get a message on the display that says ERROR. Of
course the manual does not address this. Also the radio will not
toggle between the low and high power setting.

Has anyone ever come accross this? Do you know where I might go to
get an answer?

As always, thanks a bunch for your help.
