Hello Mark,

So you got away! When we were in NZ there were three Amels on the hard in Ray Roberts Yard in Whangerei in about 1998. Presumably you will check in in Opua in the Bay of Islands and be able to get up todate info at the club there. Be aware that the Kiwi Customs are very strict on the importation of foodstuffs and will take almost all things for incinderation to protect their agricultural dependence. They even took a sealed jar of Foie gras that we had bought at great expense in Noumea. Get in touch with George and Dorothy Bateman, two Brits living in NZ and very knowledgeable about things in Opua. They are Port Officers for the OCC but as they are getting on I think that they now share the duties with an American couple. Most cruisers stay in this area and there are quite alot of Yanks who have settled in this great part of the world. Some cruisers pass the typhoon season by buying an old car for NZ$ 500-1000 and tour the islands staying at the excellent and cheap motels around the country. There are many excellent yards in NZ from Opua southwards. A bus from Opua to look at Whangerei would be a good way to look around .It is only about 20 miles by road but much more on the water. This town is a centre for the northern part of North Island and stocks just about anything a yachtie might need. We spent about five years in Opua or Whangerei and saw no reason at all to take the boat further south apart from going in cruising mode. We envy you, Anne and John, SM319

Micron 33 alternative(s)
I'll be hauling out shortly for bottom painting. I've had excellent
service (5 years on one application of two coats) from Micron 33. Since Micron 33, as a tin-based paint, isn't available any longer I'll have to remove this paint, or use a barrier coat of Micron 55, if I want to move on to Micron 66. At any rate what type of performance have other owners received from their bottom paint? Thanks Richard SM "Spice"

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Gearbox for outhaul stopped working
Robin Cooter <robincooter@...>
I serviced the outhaul system on our Santorin. The bearings are fairly standard and could be purchased cheaply from any engineering supplier. The motor is a Bosch and a Bosch agent should be able to rebuild it - all of this much, much, cheaper than AMEL. The actual gearing is Italian and you should be able to get their E-mail from the web. I have looked at their site but can't remember the address. The drive details are stamped on the unit.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Gearbox for outhaul stopped working
Udo <udo@...>
I just did exactly that repair last week. I chose to order a motor and
gear box assembly from Amel (approx. Euro 1,500). It would have been a nice easy swap out, except the shaft would not come out of the old gear box. We had to press it out in the shop. After that it was pretty straight forward. The gears were well worn in the old gear box and I am currently looking into rebuilding it to keep as a spare. I also had another spare motor rebuilt and that was pretty easy. If possible I would go with new parts from Amel. I also chose to go with a new sheave on top of the shaft, since the old one looked pretty worn and the outhaul line was slipping. That led me to a new outhaul line and now I am thinking of getting a new mainsail because the old one looks bad compared to all the other nice parts. Judy,
Yes, on the Micron paint. DoodleBug was stored on the hard while we returned to the USA. We were then painted and relaunched right after we returned to continue cruising. Diane,
Thanks, but I had already found Nelson Marine. That website says that Nelson Marine is located on the site of Nelson Marina, but there is no information provided for Nelson Marina -- unless I am missing something on that website. Another website said that it was a private marina, but still gave no useful information. As yet, still no way of contacting Nelson Marina. Mark,
DoodleBug SM#331 spent the winter of 2004/2005 at Riverside Drive Marina in Whangerei. See: www.riversidedrivemarina.com There were two other Super Maramus there at the same time that we stayed. We had routine hull painting, engine and generator servicing and the like performed at the yard. The price was reasonable; the work was high quality and what astonished me – everything was completed on time and as promised! Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] anchor washdown on 1998 SM #260
john martin <symoondog@...>
Dave, The fitting for your pipe/hose connection is in the forward port locker in the top aft section. The Amel automatic system works just fine in ordinary conditions, but in real heavy muddy conditions, ie the Cheasapeake Bay, I took the conection apart and used a hose conection and a 10 foot hose with a nozzle and I use that to spray water directly on the chain. It really blasts the heavy mud off. The added benefit is you can add a 25 foot hose to the 10 ft. section and wash down the deck. Always keep the hose nozzle open when turning on the pump as the motor has no back pressure overload and will kick off the breaker in the engine room. Also as your boat is a 1998, I believe you may find that you have an extra thru hull fitting under the floor board outside of the forward head. This is for the wash down pump. I belive Amel changed that to the sea chest in later models. That is why you should always state your sm model number when asking a question as Amel cotinually evolves. If your pump is not working, make sure that the valve is opened.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] AMEL 54 new pneumatic gangway and Davits
Sailing Vessel Bozo Cinq <bozocinq@...>
Enrico,
I have the new pneumatic gangway on my AMEL 54 - At first I was blown away by the cost of the option; however it has turned out to be one of the best option investments I made. It works and I love the remote control. It does have a couple of operating quirks, but once you understand them it is no big deal. It is a terrific option. I do not have the Davits. Gary L. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Forward bilge water
eric freedman
Dave,
The Amel modification has nothing to do with a bow thruster leak. It is only a device to prevent the loss of the bow thruster assembly, If you have Oily water in the bilge, the front seal of the bow thruster is leaking. That is the seal directly behind the propeller. This is not your problem. Clear water means that water is leaking around the bow thruster tube. There are 2 sets of seals on the bow thruster. The first set is a metric lip seal on top of which is a compressible foam seal; this is on the top of the inside of the hull where the bow thruster assembly sits in the down position. The lip seal keeps most of the water out and the compressed foam seal finishes the job. The Lip seal is a standard metric lip seal. The foam seal is available from Amel only. It is easy to change without removing the thruster from boat. There are two more foam seals one on top of the other where the bow thruster tube meets the bow thruster assembly. They are simply attached with silicone seal. However, the bow thruster has to be removed to replace these as they are outside the hull. If you see the water coming in with the bow thruster up and the boat is moving then the outside seals need replacement. If the thruster leaks with the boat moving and the thruster down then the inside, seals need replacing. I believe there is a diagram of this in the owner’s book. When you order the seals order a few complete sets as the postage costs more than the seals. if you gat a leak with the thruster up and the boat moving , a temporary fix is to tighten the motor adjusting nut so the motor is a little higher and compresses the outer seals a bit more. I rebuild the bow thruster every year and change all of the seals and the oil when I paint the bottom. I do not have any water in my bilge. As a ps ii would also buy the Amel bow thruster tool. you can change the prop and all the seals and oil without hauling the boat. I hope this helps, Fair Winds, Eric Amel Super Maramu #376 Kimberlite _____ From: amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com [mailto:amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of drdavegoodman Sent: Tuesday, July 17, 2007 9:15 AM To: amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Forward bilge water Eric; The water was not oily. However, I've not been out sailing since I discovered the water. Next time I go sailing, I will be using the bow thruster to exit and enter my dock area. After using it, I will again secure it with the pin, and will be checking for water in the forward bilge. The previous owner performed the Amel recommended modification to prevent the bowthruster from coming out of the boat, but to my knowlege has never changed the bowthruster seals.
