I was the owner of a Maramu 1978 for 4 years and was sailing before with a santorin sloop version. I have decided to change my Maramu but having taken into consideration, Inner space, lockers, rear aft drawing, cokpit... I would definitively stick on a Maramu which at least would be anyway less expensive in a ketch version.
Regarding the performances I Would say that they are equivalent and definitively prefer a Ketch version.

Finally I went for a SM ( Amel Recommandation) Which offers (if you compare with a well equiped Santorin Ketch) Much more for a " slight increase in price"

Just test sailed the 54. Superb. About 2 more feet on deck and 5 ft on the waterline. Swept back spreaders allow a tighter sheeting angle for the genoa and the optional staysail.All deck lockers now flush and the new teak look is slightly lighter and extremely attractive. Dodger completely redesigned with improved headroom and visibility.Much more bouyant aft means a larger aft cabin with a separate double bed, 160 cm wide. Twin armchairs to starboard in the saloon. New wooden effect floor throughout the interior. Forward facing chart table. Second heads is now in the bow with separate washing machine and dryer. Twin cabin forward which opens into a single large cabin.Volvo 110 hp with 900 litres of fuel. Lots of other minor but really sensible changes . This all results in a worthy successor to the SM and, amazingly, 40 have already been sold despite the fact that it has yet to be officially launched!This boat is a real winner.We just need to find a winning lottery ticket ! From the (small) pics and cutaways that I have seen so far in the
French press, it seems very similar layout to the SM. Principal
difference appears to be that the front cabin is now divided into
three parts - a double cabin to port, a bunk to starboard, and a
laundry area with washing machine forward.

The stern is now much broader, and has a decent bathing platform.
There is still no rear gantry (controversial I know!)

There are more hatches and portholes (including two in each side of
the hull) so I imagine the interior is a lot less submarine-like.

I could not work out from pics the orientation and layout of the
navigation area. I hope they have abandoned sidewards facing table,
whereby whoever is working in the "office" always has their back to
whoever is working in the galley. It is much more congenial if the
nav area faces forward as (on my boat at least) the nav table has the
computer and so is used for far more than just navigation...

I will be interested to see if they will offer a choice of
instrumentation as I would like a networked Raymarine set up in my
next boat.

The overall effect is that the boat is not quite so pretty as the SM,
though I will reserve final judgement until I see it in the flesh...

Hello,

Serena Azul SM #251 left Seattle on 20 May and arrived Sydney Australia after 59 days. She is reverting to her maiden name of Nebo and taking up Oz citizenship this week. She has ruptured her front fuler flange and as a new owner I would love some advice please about the best way of exposing the furler drive plate so that I can reattach the aluminium flange. Should I remove rivets and the furler upwards, or lower the motor. Your advice gratefully received.

Hi Bernd

Thanks for getting in touch again. My address is correct as shown
below, however, I have now located a wiring diagram in French, which I
don't understand 100% but can see that the diagram does not answer my
problem, unfortunately. All the diagram shows for the motor, a Perkins
4.236, is a tiny representation of the engine block, but with no engine
specific wiring. In other words, the wiring diagram shows everything
which relates to the boat but no detail for the Perkins electrics.

I've now spent at least four long days of valuable visits to my Mango
in Queensland (1,000 kilometres away from home) exploring the wiring,
including peeling off all of the coverings of the wiring loom and
tracking every cable separately. It's been interesting to say the
least. Right now, I'm armed with a handful of replacement relays and a
new regulator and am itching to get back there to see if I've resolved
the complex problem. If so, I'll make a post to the user group,
including to yourself of course.

We have just received a letter from Amel advising us that the new boat
will be launched at the Grand Pavois Boat Show in La Rochelle 7-12
September and then in Cannes,Southampton, Genoa, Barcelona, Paris in
December, Dusseldorf in January and Miami in February.
It is a brand new hull design as well as new deck and inside layouts.
It is said to be bigger, faster, and offers more space in her three
cabins. It can be seen at La Rochelle and Hyeres. The new brochure
will be available shortly according to Jean-Jacques Lemonnier.

Great news, let us hope that it will be a great success.

Forget about straightening the Wasi as the metal will loose its specs which will make the anchor very unreliable.Stainless still can break if its molecular structure is changed. Straightening your anchor bac kmay have such an effect I'm using a Spade 34 kg stainless steel which is doing reasonably well and it can be trusted. However depending on the holding ground it may give you some surprise like any other anchor. I almost lost my boat with 90 meters of chain and the Spade at the end. It gave way three times in a night. Of course the conditions were a bit outstanding guts 45 to 50 kts depth of 8 meters and obviously a very poor holing ground.
My conclusion is that regardless of how much you trust your anchor as soon as the wind blows seriously keep an eye out. This is the best way to prevent some unfortunate event to spoil your cruise.

Thanks for that tip. The boat already has another 2 Spade anchors which
have never even been in the water, but think those are alloy instead of
stainless. Just hate to trash the Wasi because previous owner absolutely
loved it. Hoped to find a way to salvage it. Will keep your suggestion of
stainless Spade in mind if it comes to a replacement.

Every anchors are conceived to be pulled straight "on line".. if,
for some reasons, they are pulled sideway, they usually realign
themselves with the new direction of pull..

With the "old technology anchors" the question was simple, they did
break out.. and they will not bend..

The "new technology" anchors behave differently. As they have a
better holding, they will not break out, but, if by accident, they
are wedged into something "solid" on the sea bottom (for example,
two rocks) they will bend..

It is quite easy to avoid this problem.. and they are several
solutions:
1°) the first one is to use a stronger steel alloy, this is the
solution used by Danforth, Delta.. and Spade!
- For aluminium alloy, it is a different question as it is not
possible to use all available types of aluminium, as some are not
weldable..

2°) the second possibility is to make the shank equally strong in
all directions.. which means a "square" shank. But then, if the
shank will be more solid, and could be pulled in all directions, it
will be by far too heavy and the anchor will not work any longer..
(with the Spade, we already enlarge the shank, this is why the shank
as a trapezoidal cross section – to be compared with other anchor
brands)

I've seen nearly all brand of anchors bent.. but, up to now, I
didn't find the perfectly right solution to this problem..

At least, the possibility to exchange the shank of the Spade is one
advantage.. with other anchors with a fixed shank, if you bend it..
you only have to discard the whole anchor.. With the Spade you only
have to change the shank..

I will not suggest you to do that, a bent (and re- straightened)
metal will always be weaker.. If you don't want to discard the whole
anchor, I will then suggest to find a metal shop specialised in
stainless steel. The will cut a new shank and weld it in place of
the bent one..

I will not either suggest to reinforce the shank.. Yes, the shank
will be stronger.. but the Bügel is already an unbalanced anchor and
doesn't have enough weight on the tip (only 16% of the total anchor
weight, and this is why they need a "roll bar" at the back part of
the blade) If you reinforce the shank, you will also ad some more
weight on the shank and thus decrease further more the weight
repartition on the anchor tip and decrease the setting ability..

Sorry to read about the Wasi. If you have doubts about it , try a Spade. We have never used a Wasi but fitted a stainless Spade from new.It has been put through just about every condition you can encounter in our recent trip through southern Chile and round the Horn and would be the first change of gear on any other boat we ever bought.Can't recommend it highly enough!Ian & Judy Jenkins, Pen Azen, Piriapolis, Uruguay

Dessaltor D50 24v motor permenant magnet failure

This summer the 24v dc motor on my dessalator D50 failed due to the
permanent magnets becoming detached. Dessalator have "never heard of
this happening before" - has anyone else?? My machine has only 930hrs
and since owning this for only 9 months I have been following the
instructions religiously. The cost of a new motor is around Eu1000
delivered to the UK so understandably I am reluctant to do this until
I am convinced there is not a more deepseated problem that others may
already have experienced. i look forward to your comments

Hi Roger, sorry for the long time untill my answere, but I thought that all papers are on the boat. But I found one copy of the wiring diagram at home. I hope it bis correkt to write Your adress as following:

On my MANGO I have two generators at the engine, one for the starter- and one for the service battery-bank. The shore-power charger just Charges the service bank. The main switch has 4 positions (off, charge, normal and both) as described in the wring diagram. In charge position, the servics bank get charged. in the normal position, the engine can be started and the Charger is switched off from the service bank. Both is for starting the engine in case of empty motor bank. I am afraid it is useably only once, after that the Startermotor is defekt. 600 AH from the service bank is to much for it.
If You have two Generators on Your engine, You don´t need any relay, exept You use aditional a wind generator or a solar panel. The motor bank should be normally fully loaded, because the re use during start is very short and it gets loaded during the engine runs. For the service bank generator I use a electronic alternator regulator from Sterling power products. It works very well, short loading time needed and controls the loading voltage direktly at the battery bank and depending to the battery temperature. that seemed sensful to me, because the battery bank is in the engine room and after a longer engine run You may have a battery temperature of app. 40 ° C. What means the loading voltage of Your generator is as low that You get the battery never fully loaded or it is higher and You may kill Your battery with to high voltage during longer engine runtimes. I fly at the 28. of august to the Kanaries where my boat is. I have a little user manual for the MANGO there. I´ll send You copy, it is written in english.
After I purchased my MANGO I had same problems like You. I changed the wiring like it is shown in the diagram and it works fine now.
I think all the things I wrote You did already know, but I hope the Diagram will help You.

down pumps with USA made products.
