Re: Noisy outhaul drive on main boom

The problem is the main shaft of the gear box, wich is of mild steel.
This shaft rust and the water sips in the gear box. I had good
results with high quality sea water resisting grease (locktite has a
good one), but at the end I choose to replace the shaft with a
stainless one, no more problems since then.
(any good machine shop can copy the shaft)

Hi Eric,
When you hit the bolt with the sledge hammer, which shaft came
loose? the one holding the Andersen winch? It sounds as if
instead
of dropping the gearbox, you raised the winch. Is this right?
I'm
about to try it, and would appreciate as much detail as you can

Amel told

puller.
It
appears that they are right! For your information it is the
horizontal
spindle that connects to the motor that has failed on my boat.
Amel
weren't
a bit surprised at this as my boat is 10 yrs old and depending
on
mileage
gear boxes regularly fail at 5 yrs. Let me know how you get on,
I
will be
using a manual outhaul now until the boat comes ashore for the
winter,

What do you liveaboards carry in the way of insurance?

Judy Rouse <judyrouse@...>

Depends entirely on where you live or sail as well as the value of the
yacht. Recently was quoted a premium of just over $6,000 per year for only
500k coverage in Caribbean (requirement of NOT being within hurricane box
during season July through Nov). This quote was for a 2003 SM2. Received
comparable quotes from both American Marine Services and IMIS for Jackline
Policy.

Amel 54 impressions

rjct2002

I had a look at the new Amel 54 at the Cannes boat show today. I was
very impressed - they've fixed nearly everything that was wrong (in
my opinion) with the SM.

Waterline length is longer, sail area is bigger. I expect it'll be
more spritely in light airs.

The cockpit has been improved with an extendable spray hood that
comes out of the windshield. The cockpit table is bigger and stronger.

The stern is much wider with a nice bathing area. The wider stern
means it is now possible to fite decent davits - and the yard will do
this as an option.

There is much more natural light in the interior thanks to lots of
new portholes and hatches. The wood is lighter coloured, and fiddles
etc are more modern. It no longer resembles a retirement home for
submariners.

The stern cabin is more spacious thanks to the wider stern.

The forecabin is modular and can be either one large cabin, or can be
split into two cabins with a folding partition. The washing machine
and dryer are in the forepeak.

There is now a huge fridge/freezer where the washing machine used to
be in the kitchen.

The nav table is now forward spacing and has a decent armchair. There
is now a choice of instruments - buyer can specify Furuno or
Raymarine.

It is a much nicer boat all round.
The wider stern makes the cabin below considerably bigger.

Zinc anodes

rogerhbanks <roger.banks@...>

Having just done the antifouling stint, other owners may be interested to hear what we
worked out with an engineering adviser about earthing. The reason there is only a single
pair of anodes, i.e. on the rudder, is that the loom of earthing straps on the boat connects
to the anode pair. I've checked this with a multimeter. It has overcome my concern that
there didn't seem to be any zinc protection for the prop and shaft, nor any room to attach
an anode direct to the shaft.

Whilst the modern advice on galvanic corrosion, especially in marinas, is for each thru-hull
to be separated from the others, clearly every other thing which is attached to the prop
shaft either directly or by liquid, e.g. engine block, fuel tanks, metal parts of the engine
water inlet system, and the outer brass tube of the prop shaft system, needs to be
protected, which I have achieved by checking the integrity of their connections to the
rudder anodes. There is, of course, the small zinc in the heat exchanger but this is tiny,
even if owners do remember to change it.

Regards Roger, Mango 28 Zorba

Re: Faux teak

rogerhbanks <roger.banks@...>

With respect, I don't think the posted entries seem to deal with the faux teak itself or the
coach roof. There are plenty of comments on the stripes, which is helpful. In my case, the
previous owner painted (rather poorly) over all the decking (including stripes), coach roof
and cockpit with white paint, which I'm keen to change back, if possible, to original or
something approximating to it. Is it perhaps the case that the faux teak is a stick-on pre-
printed material which cannot be restored or re-gained? Like the posting two days ago, I
would be very grateful to receive any guidance on this subject.

As an alternative get an estimate for covering with TEK-DEK which is

keep the deck from getting so hot in the tropics.

Faux teak

John and Anne on Bali Hai <hollamby@...>

This subject has come up before. Go to the bottom of the page and type
in faux teak and hit search to see all the postings.
As an alternative get an estimate for covering with TEK-DEK which is
a sort of cork planking. Probably costly but would look good and would
keep the deck from getting so hot in the tropics.

Regards, Anne and John

discoloration of the "fake teak" decking

mike_ondra <mondra@...>

We are in the process of purchasing a 1999 SM. The "fake teak"
decking in the bow area show discoloration, spotty lightening of the
color. How colorfast is this material and is there a color
restoration technique other than painting?

SM 2000 Year 2003, # 396 is now for sale.

Göran Svensson

This is an opportunity to obtain a very well maintained `as new' SM,
very little used with low engine hours. It has only been sailed across
the Atlantic directly after delivery in 2003 and after that used by us
for about 2 months total during winter and spring 2004 and 2005.In the
hurricane season the yacht has been stored in a protected boat yard.
The list of optional equipment is very extensive.
Location: Bradenton, Florida. Asked price $ 595.000 (European VAT not
paid)
Don't hesitate to ask for specifications and photos.
Kind regards
Göran Svensson

Graham,

I removed the shaft by placing a long steel bolt in the threaded

off of it and replaced it with a thick film of white lube.

Hi Eric,
When you hit the bolt with the sledge hammer, which shaft came
loose? the one holding the Andersen winch? It sounds as if instead
of dropping the gearbox, you raised the winch. Is this right? I'm
about to try it, and would appreciate as much detail as you can
provide. Thanks to you and Graham for your input!!

I have just had exactly the same and it resulted in the gear box
packing up
completely! Fortunately the manual over ride system in the SM works
quite
well. I tried to remove the gear box yesterday using a puller - you
undo the
bolt underneath the gear box connected to the vertical shaft that
attaches
directly to the rope drum and then you "pull the gear box down".
Amel told
me that it would probably be very stiff and that most likely I
would have to
remove the boom and take it to a work shop with a hydraulic puller.
It
appears that they are right! For your information it is the
horizontal
spindle that connects to the motor that has failed on my boat. Amel
weren't
a bit surprised at this as my boat is 10 yrs old and depending on
mileage
gear boxes regularly fail at 5 yrs. Let me know how you get on, I
will be
using a manual outhaul now until the boat comes ashore for the
winter,

Hi there,
We have developed a loud noise when using the outhaul drive on the
main boom. It is coming from the gearbox area, as it is there even
when the rope is removed. I have tried lubricating the gearbox, but
would prefer to remove it from the boom to do this thoroughly.
Has anyone done this? Or otherwise solved this problem?
Thanks for any ideas.
