Hi John,

They are a great resource.

I also used them to replace the anchor wash down pump, and fresh water wash
down pumps with USA made products.

Fair winds,

Eric

Hello Eric,
I am delighted to report that depcopump.com has turned up trumps and
they are sending me a new unit for $150 plus some new impellors for my
engine and genset all at a fraction of the UK price.
Many thanks for your help.

John,

If they quote you more than $149.00 let me know as I believe that is a
wholesale price and you can use my account.

I took apart my motors to replace the seals and the weep holes in mine were
properly oriented.

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the tip, I am contacting Depco at once. The cost in the UK
for the macerator unit is about USD350 !
My message to Amel hit this site by mistake as I entered the wrong
address for Amel so I deleted the message but luckily you got it.
Amel are on holiday until the end of the month.
I wonder how many other owners fopund that the plastic section of the
pump was wrongly oriented so that the weep holes were above the level
of the bearing of the motor. Just stupid that there are not four weep
holes so that the orientation would not matter.

Hi Rob:

How did your sail go? My partner and I sailed from La Rochelle to St. Lucia in Feb. We're now sailing up the eastern seaboard, but we're considering a pacific crossing.
Any advice?

Dear Olivier,
I refer to my recent Email to you as I have not had a response.
The Email was as follows:-

Dear Olivier,
The seal on the macerator pump on the aft toilet started leaking in July
2004. On stripping it down I found that the assembly had been fitted ninety
degrees wrong so that the weep holes in the plastic seal housing were in
the horizontal plane thus causing the housing to fill up to half full
before allowing the leaking water to escape. I found that both toilets were
wrongly assembled. I corrected this but only now have I discovered that the
salt water effluent had entered the motor and caused major damage.
The silly thing is that the incorrect assembly would not matter if Jabsco
had put four vents in the housing instead of two.
The replacement motors are grossly expensive and I have been in touch with
Jabsco UK who have been pretty unhelpful so far, although they have offered
20% discount on a new motor.
I have told them that the problem is entirely due to bad assemby and that I
assume that Amel buys the units ready assembled and thus were not to blame.
They assert that there is no evidence that Amel do not refit the motors in
the wrong plane and thus evade responsibility.
I should be grateful for your views and especially whether there is any
possibility of your people wasting time to rotate the motors on new units
possibly to ensure that the manufacturers label is on top rather that on
the side of the finished assembly !!!!

Best wishes from Malta where I am recovering from a hip
replacement operation, John Hollamby

It seems inconceivable that Amel would have taken the new toilets apart and
assembled them so that the weep holes were in the horizontal plane thus
inevitably causing the motor to be damaged when the seal eventually started
leaking. It therefore seems to me that ITT Jabsco should replace the ruined
motor completely free of charge.
I can not pursue them directly as I did not purchase them from them and I
therefore ask you to get in touch with your local suppliers to secure a
free replacement for me.
I look forward to hearing from you as a matter of urgency.

Best wishes John

I have just learnt that the Grand Pavois is this year to be
dedicated to Le Capitaine - Henri Amel, one of the founders of
the GrandPavois. There is news of this and some further news
of interest at the web site:

All in French so if anyone needs help let me know.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] choice Maramu vs Santorin

David Wallace

We have owned a 1982 Maramu for 5 years, and sailed her 5500 nm to Mexico and back, but just spent 10 days sailing between Denmark and Sweden with friends on their 1992 Santorin so have some comparative experience. Fundamentally, the Santorin is about 6000 pounds lighter than the Maramu but the same beam and waterline, so sails at almost 1 kt faster for given wind/sea conditions. Additionally, the Santorin has several convenience factors that our Maramu does not (although some newer ones do) -- in-mast furling, bow-thruster, steps on the stern. Amel also made other improvements with the Santorin, such as moving the fuel tank to the centerline instead of outboard of the passage to the aft cabin, and configuring the drive train with a saildrive unit rather than a shaft. The only real plus to us for the Maramu over the Santorin is the cockpit configuration -- in the Santorin one comes up the companionway to a flat cockpit floor, while the Maramu has the forward part of the floor lowered: the effect of that is that for the Maramu you can stand at the helm completely under the hard dodger, but with the Santorin the dodger is too low to do that. We also prefer the interior layout of the Maramu, but that might just be because we're so used to ours. We love our boat and have no regrets with her, but if I were starting over and the economic factors worked out, would probably choose the Santorin.

If you have any specific questions, I would be happy to try to answer them.

Furling Mainsails

John and Anne Hollamby <hollamby@...>

Fully battened mainsails are notoriously difficult to hoist, lower and
furl. This problem would be even larger if the Amel mast were to be
adapted. Probably easier to scrap the mast and rigging and have a new one
made complete with spinnaker pole track etc..
On mt last ketch I replaced the old main with a new one fitted with
vertical battens thus changing from a negative to a positive roach. It
resulted in a seven percent increase in sail area which could have been
increased in the light of experience. It was a much better looking and
performing sail. I have never seen this done on any other in-mast furling
system and assume that sail makers are not interested in developing more
efficient in-mast sails.
And before you ask, the battens do not get stuck in the mast as they are
furled in well away from the boom where the maximun number of furls enter
the mast.

looking for an amel kirk

hi all I am looking for an amel kirk to sail in the Med,
There are several boats for sale at the moment at what seems to be reasonable prices.
Is there anything in particular to look out for in these older boats?
What sort of prices do they sell for?
Where would you recommend for the boat to spend the winter?
Cheers john nichols

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Electric motor mailsail boom

bobbohn <bobbohn@...>

Has anyone just removed the auto furling system and gone back to
normal sails? My thought is that auto-furlers could be removed from
the masts for full batten tracks. This could offer full batten
[high roach] sails with lazy jacks. A little more work but a much
more efficient sail. Comments???? -Bob

What you describe here is very typical of the carbon brushes being

reinstall the boot with silicon seal and clamp.

Marinas Malta & Tunisia

John and Anne on Bali Hai <hollamby@...>

Hi There,
We are based in Malta. There are really only three Marinas. The new
Camper & Nicholson in Grand Harbour which is the most expensive and
far from the nicer parts for
shopping, chandleries, maintenance, restaurants etc which are close to
Manoel Island Marina and Msida Creek Marina.
I am afraid I know nothing much about Manoel Island Marina but I
have overwintered in Msida Marina for the last three years. The
pontoons are far from new but the charges are reasonable and include
power and water. There is a supplement for liveaboards. Telephone
and broadband connection can be made via the local telecom company,
Maltacom. You might also be able to hire your own Satellite Tv gear.
For more details see www.mma.gov.mt or contact info@...
It is difficult to get space in the season but many Maltese haul
their boats on Manoel Island from late October and space is then
avalable. Cheap flights are getting easier to get.
Friends who have overwintered in Tunisia tell us that it is fine but
that parts and servicing availability is poor.
I suspect that marinas in Sicily are much more modern but also
expensive.

Best wishes, Anne and John, Bali Hai SM319
