Just to report that Amel have now put something on their web site
www.amel.fr It includes a 5 minute 20 second video but forget that unless
you are on broadband as the download would take forever on a dial up
connection. Overall it is much less detailed than the old SM 2000 site.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Noisy outhaul drive on main boom

Graham,

I removed the shaft by placing a long steel bolt in the threaded hole in the
bottom of the shaft and driving it up with a heavy sledge hammer. A regular
hammer or mallet will not work. The shaft came loose and I sanded the rust
off of it and replaced it with a thick film of white lube.

Fair winds,

Eric

I have just had exactly the same and it resulted in the gear box packing up
completely! Fortunately the manual over ride system in the SM works quite
well. I tried to remove the gear box yesterday using a puller - you undo the
bolt underneath the gear box connected to the vertical shaft that attaches
directly to the rope drum and then you "pull the gear box down". Amel told
me that it would probably be very stiff and that most likely I would have to
remove the boom and take it to a work shop with a hydraulic puller. It
appears that they are right! For your information it is the horizontal
spindle that connects to the motor that has failed on my boat. Amel weren't
a bit surprised at this as my boat is 10 yrs old and depending on mileage
gear boxes regularly fail at 5 yrs. Let me know how you get on, I will be
using a manual outhaul now until the boat comes ashore for the winter,

Re: Stern bumper

Graham Boyd

I fitted a new bumper to my SM in Jan this year and when it arrived
from Amel I didn't think that the covering was the same as the old.
In practice it has been absolutely fine but bear in mind the boat is
in Scotland and one of the few weather problems that we don't have
here is very strong sun!

I bought from the Amel yard in april 2004 a new bumper and within

I contacted Amel on this issue and they offered me a new one for
half
the price. Because I think that the problem is the bad quality of
the
cover material - which is definately not the same material as used
on
the original bumper that lasted for more than 10 year - I hesitate
to
accept this offer (which in fact I judge not to be generous at
all,
if the problem is a an inferior product that was sold).
This summer I met an other Amel Santorin in Sardinia with a
relatively new bumper that also shows cover material peeling off.
So
my question is are there more owners of Amel boats with recent
bumpers showing peeling off of the cover material?

Replacement for KIRK Navigation Lights

RFC000 <rfc000@...>

I have to replace the navigation lights (the external part with the green glass and the transparent glass for the rear one) and I would very much like to find replacement identical to the original parts which I have been using so far.

I asked the chantier but didn't get any answer.

Does anybody in the club know where I can find these parts or have any useful suggestion?

Thank you so much.

Chain Counter

mcymabm <mcymabm@...>

Hi Alain,...who answered me a long time ago, while I was at sea

Thank you for your advice. I actually have done that…..not quite
match with an AMEL boat!!
But I find much more convenient and secure to be able to manoeuvre
the windlass from the cockpit because I can help with the engine in
order not to pull too much on it. Since, I persevere in my search of
a solution. It happens that the first Super Maramu which turned on in
Panama after me also had a problem with its chain counter( quality
confirmed) and nevertheless the AMEL refusal to help, we managed with
a professional electronician to make one with two …or nearly. On
getting the anchor back on board, the counting of the "ten" figure
works well but the unit figure goes wrong ; e.g. 40,41…49,30,31,
….39,20 and so on.

Does anybody know the solution to that?

Bill,
West Marine carries both 25 and 10 watt navigation bulbs. 25 watt = 4810834; 10 watt = 4810826.

They have toll free phone numbers for many countries but I don't know where you are. Their international number is: (+1) 831 761-4800 and fax is:(+1) 831 761-4020.

Subject : [Amel Yacht Owners] choice Maramu vs Santorin

I was the owner of a Maramu 1978 for 4 years and was sailing before with a santorin sloop version. I have decided to change my Maramu but having taken into consideration, Inner space, lockers, rear aft drawing, cokpit... I would definitively stick on a Maramu which at least would be anyway less expensive in a ketch version.
Regarding the performances I Would say that they are equivalent and definitively prefer a Ketch version.

Finally I went for a SM ( Amel Recommandation) Which offers (if you compare with a well equiped Santorin Ketch) Much more for a " slight increase in price"

Best regards

Amel 54

ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>

Just test sailed the 54. Superb. About 2 more feet on deck and 5 ft on the waterline. Swept back spreaders allow a tighter sheeting angle for the genoa and the optional staysail. All deck lockers now flush and the new teak look is slightly lighter and extremely attractive. Dodger completely redesigned with improved headroom and visibility.Much more bouyant aft means a larger aft cabin with a separate double bed, 160 cm wide. Twin armchairs to starboard in the saloon. New wooden effect floor throughout the interior. Forward facing chart table. Second heads is now in the bow with separate washing machine and dryer. Twin cabin forward which opens into a single large cabin.Volvo 110 hp with 900 litres of fuel. Lots of other minor but really sensible changes . This all results in a worthy successor to the SM and, amazingly, 40 have already been sold despite the fact that it has yet to be officially launched! This boat is a real winner. We just need to find a winning lottery ticket ! Ian and Judy Jenkins, Pen Azen, SM 302

Re: Amel 54

rjct2002

From the (small) pics and cutaways that I have seen so far in the
French press, it seems very similar layout to the SM. Principal
difference appears to be that the front cabin is now divided into
three parts - a double cabin to port, a bunk to starboard, and a
laundry area with washing machine forward.

The stern is now much broader, and has a decent bathing platform.
There is still no rear gantry (controversial I know!)

There are more hatches and portholes (including two in each side of
the hull) so I imagine the interior is a lot less submarine-like.

I could not work out from pics the orientation and layout of the
navigation area. I hope they have abandoned sidewards facing table,
whereby whoever is working in the "office" always has their back to
whoever is working in the galley. It is much more congenial if the
nav area faces forward as (on my boat at least) the nav table has the
computer and so is used for far more than just navigation...

I will be interested to see if they will offer a choice of
instrumentation as I would like a networked Raymarine set up in my
next boat.

The overall effect is that the boat is not quite so pretty as the SM,
though I will reserve final judgement until I see it in the flesh...

Hello,

Serena Azul SM #251 left Seattle on 20 May and arrived Sydney Australia after 59 days. She is reverting to her maiden name of Nebo and taking up Oz citizenship this week. She has ruptured her front fuler flange and as a new owner I would love some advice please about the best way of exposing the furler drive plate so that I can reattach the aluminium flange. Should I remove rivets and the furler upwards, or lower the motor. Your advice gratefully received.
