Re: Canopy for AMEL 54
drdavegoodman
I recently a 53 SM 1998. The previous owner used a canopy produced by
"Shade Tree" [http://www.intheshd.com/]. It comes in 3 sections to cover the entire boat. Some of the sections and tent pole pieces are quite worn, and in need of repair, which makes assembly and disassembly quite difficult. The middle section and poles are in very good shape, and even though thats the biggest section, it goes on the easiest. It has taken me about 1-2 hours to set up and to break down, but each time I do it it goes faster. It provides great sun protection. I plan to get the worn sections repaired as well as get some new pole sections, and that should make the assembly/disassembly process much easier and faster. --- In amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com, "gwollenberg" <bozocinq@...> wrote:

SM Mizen furling Drive shaft unscrewing itself from the gear box
Graham Boyd
Hi
Dear All When I tried to furl the mizen sail into the mast using a winch handle in the hole on the front of the mizen mast, after a few turns the sail would no longer furl and the winch handle turned freely as though the gear box at the bottom of the furling foil had broken. I disconnected the gear box from the mast and discovered that the drive shaft that goes through the mast into the gear box had become unscrewed from the gear box. I screwed the drive shaft back into the gear box and tried the system again but it continues to become unscrewed and you can't furl the sail. How do I get this drive shaft to remain screwed into the gear box? Is there a pin that has perhaps sheared? or do I just put epoxy glu on the screw threads and hope it holds? I look forward to your help and advice with this problem, Graham G Boyd SM 140 SULA

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Microwave replacement
dianexnielsen@...
Bill & Judy,
We did purchase a Sharp R-228H Microwave Oven on-line at http://www.western-international.com. The price and shipping were very reasonable. It is smaller than the original, white which does brighten up the galley, it does not have the grill which didn't matter as we would most likely not use the grill much. It works great. Thank you for your information. Diane & Pat s/v Shenanigans SM123

Canopy for AMEL 54
gwollenberg <bozocinq@...>
Our vessel is presently moored in Spanish Waters,Curacao and will be
there thru November/December. We would like to have a canopy made to cover the vessel and us from the hot sun. Plus it would help keep the interior cooler. So we are looking for recommendations & names of businesses we could contact in Curacao to make a portable canopy.

Re: Microwave replacement
Diane,
Our "repaired" microwave failed again. We had Caroline at Amel in Guadeloupe purchase the same microwave that Gary describes below. She is holding it until we arrive in Bonaire and will ship it to us there. Her email address is amel.caraibes "at" wanadoo.fr..substitute the "at" with @. It is a 220 volt, 50 Hertz model, white in color sothat it lightens the galley up a little bit and does not have the browning element. It isn'tquite as tall as the original Amel provided microwave but measures the same in all otherdimensions. I utilized a piece of dark colored closed cell foam padding under the hold downbracket to make up for the height and it is barely visible in the rather dark recesseswhere the hold down bracket is located. I considered purchasing a 110 volt 60 hertzunit and running it off my inverter but in the end decided to stick with a 50 hertz unit.

[Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Dual Racor 500 facts or myths?
According to the Racor information supplied with the adapters, the
rubber spacer is required for those units which have a "flat top surface" on the cross bar at the base of the standpipe. This description is not very clear to me yet as I have not looked inside the filter unit. I believe that the primary source of the confusion is that Racor decided to change the filter unit and then change the filter elements without changing the element part number. I have been told that complete information is on their website, but buried deeply. I have searched their website and have not been able to locate the information. You may be able to get more information if you can call their 800 number at 800-344-3286. One thing that troubles me is that I met a Beneteau owner yesterday. He ordered and received delivery of a new Beneteau including a factory installed dual Racor in 2004. He says that his dual Racor is the older model and he has to use the adapters. This worries me. Fortunately, I have obtained some adapters from another cruiser and I still have a supply of the older red/orange filters, so I will not have an issue until that supply depletes. Thanks for the Racor filter information. Our dual Racor was installed by

Is it obvious from visual inspection when the filter slides too low, or is it more subtle? Re: Dual Racor 500 facts or myths?
We found some information on the adapter...here it is:
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Racor 500 Series Built about 1996 or 1997 and before may need a Spacer if using the new Racor element 2010 S T or P. This Filter can be easy identified by the recess at the bottom of the filter. If not used the filter may go far down into the housing past the hole in the suction pipe and the filter will be bypassed. Racor Part # 15424 Racor will provide the spacer at no cost - not even a shipping/handling fee - or you can cut your own from 5/16" i.d. flex fuel hose, 1 inch in length. Dual Racor 500 facts or myths?
We recently purchased a new supply of Racor filters and noticed that
the color of the plastic on the Racor brand 2 micron filter was now beige/brown, whereas the previous Racor brand 2 micron filter was red/orange. We were discussing this someone else who insisted that the new redesigned 2 micron filter would not work properly in a Dual Racor 500 that was manufactured prior to 2006. He said that you had to get an adapter from Racor which was placed on the standpipe prior to inserting a new filter. He said the adapter looked like a small piece of PVC pipe that fit over the standpipe. He said if you did not use the adapter, fuel would bypass the new beige/brown filter and make the dual Racor inoperable. I found nothing at the Racor website at http://www.parker.com/ead/cm1.asp?cmid=392 Is this Fact or Myth? Does anyone have any knowledge of this? Regards, Bill & Judy Rouse s/v BeBe SM2 #387

Our SM is no 302, launched in June 2000.I need another chart chip for the Geonav plotter but I am in London and the boat is in Uruguay. Some of the new Navionics cahrt chips use an updated software and I cannot remember which software I have. From memory the software number comes up when you first switch on the plotter.
Is there anyone out there on a SM numbered between 297and 307 who can tell me what software number they have? Thanks, Ian and Judy Jenkins, Pen Azen _________________________________________________________________ Tell MSN about your most memorable emails! http://www.emailbritain.co.uk/

If it is switched on, you cannot see the light standing on deck of your own yacht, because the cover of the mast ist wider than the mast itself. So as you need it - one can see it only from distance. My Santorin, 004, was not fitted with a "motoring" light. I understand that for some reason Amel would not fit them. I had to put on a bi-colour on the pulpit and a steaming light on the mast!

Hi Gary/Joel
Having read your note on new windshield. There are only two things that will delay the onset of crazing in plastics, keep the sun off(when possible) and DO NOT USE any chemicals clean only with fresh water. I would also request a copy of the 'definitive' procedure for epoxy repairs to keel if possible please Joel. I have recently become an Amel owner Maramu46 - ORION1 and will no doubt have lots of questions to follow! A previous posting mentioned hull bubbles we have a few but the boat is a 79 build. Does anyone have any useful tips for dealing with minor osmosis?
