Re: hot water
Terry,
As part of the refit on my 1989 SM, I replaced the original water heater with an Isotemp all stainless steel unit. As a matter of comparison, after running the diesel for 45 minutes during the afternoon, the Isotemp water heater actually kept the water hot overnight whereas the water in the original unit was lukewarm. I picked it up from E-Marine in Ft. Lauderdale. Richard SM #5 Spice I need to replace the hot water heater in my 1989 Amel Maramu . Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Navigation
Mike Johnson
Hi,
If you are looking for an AIS receiver can I recommend www.milltechmarine.com <http://www.milltechmarine.com/> who provide an excellent AIS receiver that works well with MaxSea and C-MAP. We are using the SR162G and VHF aerial splitter with excellent results. Our only disappointment was MaxSea's inability to accept the NMEA stream of both GPS and AIS on the same COM port, however, this was easily resolved with a $5 'Y' cable. We are actually in the MED, but are planning to cross the atlantic in
the near future and spend some time in the caribean sea (1-2 years). On our SM #227 we have no SSB Radio yet and we will buy an Iridium satellite phone. I am interested to know how the SSB radio is used in the caribean? Is it worth to install a SSB radio or is VHF enough to communicate within the caribean? What is the best tool to get weatherforecasts over there? All type of advise is wellcome. Thanks in advance Paul SM 227

Chain Counter alternative
rbenven44 <no_reply@...>
Hi,
The chain counter on our SM (designed & installed by Pochon) was repaired once in France by Pochon for a very high sum, and has since failed again. I have been looking for an alternative, since we find it a useful device. I noticed in the Accastillage Diffusion web site a nice-looking unit made by MZ Electronic from Monza, Italy, selling for 149 Euros. I contacted MZ, got the specs and installation instructions, and it looks very straightforward. You can look at the unit and manual at http://www.mzelectronic.com/MANUALI/EV011_MAN.pdf Does anyone have any experience with this unit? I plan to buy one and install it later this spring and report back on the outcome, as I believe the Pochon units are prone to failure, and this appears to be a low-cost alternative. My experience with Almerimar is a very good one; it's inexpensive and YES Yachting looked after my boat a couple of winters ago, for 40 Euro per month.

Hi,
I am current moderator of the group and I have my boat at Spanish Med (22 miles north of America´s cup challenging field). I know also Almerimar and it is ok as it has been said. However there are plenty of places where you can leave your boat, It depends on what services you will need and on which part you will finish your trip. Lagos in Portugal is also beautiful. I can also say that Melilla (African coast but spanish territory) is cheaper than the Spanish peninsula. If you are interested in the Almeria Bay area, apart from Almerimar you have Roquetas, Aguadulce, Almeria... If you plan to double Gata Cape and move north up the Spanish peninsula there are also multiple options, including Balearic Islands. If you plan to visit them in your trip to Turkey. I suggest you to visit also Corsica, Cercenya, Sicilia, etc. Let me know what you need, I will try to help you from Madrid. --- In amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com, "coatsken" <goldendaze@...> wrote: to end up in Spain sometime in Aug. after a while in the Azores. In the process of moving up in yacht size I have placed Amels on my short list. I'm in Brisbane, Australia and enquire whether there are any Amel owners who might be planning, or indeed are in transit south and intend to make Australia or SoPac the final stop with intention of selling their yacht here or somewhere else in the SoPac. I am looking to purchase within a flexible timeframe and would consider Amels 46' and over, preferably without C Drive...ie Maramu and Mango, although C Drive yachts built prior to 1998 may be considered. Incidently, any purchase is not dependent on the sale of an existing vessel as is so often the case. That is, I intend a cash purchase for the right yacht. I am looking for a personal yacht. I am not a broker or dealer and would ask that only private owners contact me personally. I do not wish to transact with brokers, dealers , professional or semi- professional yacht delivery outfits. LIGHT UP, BUT NO MOVEMENT. IN FACT THE THRUSTER PROP ALSO IS INOPERATIVE. HOW CAN I RAISE THE UNIT? THE LIFT MOTOR SOUNDS LIKE IT IS STILL WORKING, BUT SLIPING ON THE DRIVE SHAFT? ANY HELP, OR CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THE BOTTOM PROXIMITY SENSOR HAS BROKEN ITS STAINLESS STEEL CLAMP. THIS SENSOR HAS AN "H" ON IT. IF I POSITION IT ON THE SHAFT IT THINKS THE THRUSTER IS UP. JOHN FOLINO

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Darn Batteries - Thank you
Eric Lindholm
There is another item you may want to check and that is AC ripple from your charger. There was an article in a recent Cruising World on how AC ripple can cause your batteries to discharge even when the charger is going full bore. The article said to test for this with a multimeter on the AC setting, putting the black probe on the negative, the red on the positive, and if it shows more that .2 VAC it will cause to batteries to discharge while cooking them at the same time. Cruising World March 2007 page 98.

Re: Marinas in Spain
Ken Knight <ken@...>
Spanish Marinas in August are at their most expensive and it is the
busiest time, but after mid September they become much cheaper and easier to get berths. Many yachts over winter in Barcelona there are 2 marinas with a third being completed, the most popular is Port Vell being an easy walk to the Ramblas (centre of the city) second is Port Olympic. The marinas in Barcelona are not so expensive but getting a winter berth can be a problem. Barcelona is an exciting & vibrant city, from Barcelona Airport one can get budjet flights to almost anywhere in Europe. North of Barcelona there are many Marinas most of which are cheaper than those in the South of Spain. Such as Palamos, Estratit, L'Escala (not very sheltered), Rosas, Empuriabrava (where we are berthed & the most sheltered),etc all within easy reach of Barcelona or Girona Airport, suprisingly some of these are more expensive than Puerto Vela, Rosas & Empuriabra are not very far from the French border & within easy reach of the Balearics & Sardinia.

Hi,
Marinas in Spain now tend either to be expensive, and full, or if a reasonable price then just full. Two you could try are Almerimar and Aguadulce, both are at the bottom end of the price range. Almerimar is big but Aguadulce is better sheltered (ignore the pilot book - the writer must never have been there and much of the information is inaccurate!) Both not far from Almeria, which has good transport links as well as "cheap" flights to the rest of Europe.
