Iv,

Replace your automotive alternator regulator with one of those 3 or up to 12 steps regulators. Balmar has a good regulator (Westmarine or Defender Industries in the US). I haveseen one offered by Sterling of the UK. But there are many others.

Before these sofisticated units became popular, i use to build and install a small manual regulator ( parts, a 5k variable resistor and a 3055 transistor mounted on a heat sink, cost less than 15euros) that allows the operator to détermine how many amps are  to be fed by the alternator ( basically, except for a short while, not more than half the capacity of the alternator and also not more than 30% of the capacity in amps of the battery bank. The only inconvenience with the manual control, is that you have to set the charge level and  determine the charging time. On the other hand when you close the manual regulator, the alternator the reverts to its original usually internal regulator.

There must be a web site that deal with this issue. I beleive i saw something on Sterling's web site a few years ago. I you cant find anything, i could send you a schematic which varies depending wether you have a negative or positive regulated alternator. Most large ( 175 amp and more) alternators are positive regulated while automotive alternators are negative regulated. I have a large list of models, but since there are more than 900 models manufactured under Delco-Remy, i do note have a list of all alternators.

On the subject of batteries for the service bank: My long experience is that 6 volts Golf Cart Batteries are the best for yachties: they last longer, they are reliable as their plates are thicker and therefore accept many more discharges and recharges than a group 31 or 27 automotive battery and also accept deeper discharge without dammage. The Trojan are my choice. The Golf Cart batteries can be found anywhere there is a Golf Court..., but i admit that while not expensive in the US, here in Martinique where i am presently, they cost almost 300$us. Mind you, even at that price the local dealer sells them like hot cakes... They can be fitted in a Mango, i do not know if they have been fitted in SM!

Hi Danny,

Take a look at the photo at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amelyachtowners/photos/album/1810067720/pic/list

#387 had an Isotemp originally and we replaced it with the same model # Isotemp, but in the mean time Isotemp modified that model #.

Installing the new model was a little more than a normal "boat challenge" and possibly there was a better way to install it. BTW, it is most likely the heat element that is leaking/defective. I do not know about your mfg., but Isotemp sells the replacement element and Home Depot on St. Thomas will have a number of "universal" heating elements that may well fit.

It does not look like it, but the water heater will remove between the ceiling and the generator.

Budget Marine in St. Thomas had the Isotemp 40 liter when I was there last.

Judy says hi to Yvonne.

Best,

Bill

I just purchased a replacement water heater from ahoycaptain.

http://www.ahoycaptain.com/shop/quick_nautic_b3.html

The cost was $430 and that included shipping. Before making the order I checked with Amel to make sure that I was ordering the correct size. They told me that my boat was had the 600 watt unit as original equipment so that is what I ordered as a replacement.( 40 L and 600 watts). I called the Quick company and they recommenced a few web based providers. Ahoycaptain was the least expensive and as it turned out the unit was shipped to me direct from Quick. I have not installed the heater yet but it looks just like the old one and I don't expect any problem ( famous last words )

Re: [Amel] Optima AGM Batteries

Mark Pitt

I put 13 Trojan AGM batteries in my SM in September 2006 on the East Coast of the US and they are still going strong. My wife and I have sailed the boat to the South Pacific and cruised extensively for the past 3 1/2 years. The batteries have been cycled hundreds of times, although rarely with a discharge as low as 50 percent, and the batteries are doing fine. As far as I can tell, they will get us the rest of the way around the world (the boat is currently in Australia). Replacement AGM batteries are available in Australia but I have no need to replace them.

my thoughts too always check out the local big auto supply place rather
than chandlers for batteries belts and oil and filters - BUT back to AGM
batteries if you are in the USA then 'old' computer room UPS AGM batteries
are so cheap it is untrue - sadly you need to buy a load of them more than
one boat even an Amel could use but if you can get together with some
'friends' then even shipped down island they are highly cost effective.

Has anyone replaced their batteries with the Optima Bluetop AGMs? They're
expensive, but the hype seems to indicate the long term payback is worth
the
initial cost. Their testimonials are mostly from bass fishermen who are
using electric trolling motors, etc. and don't really apply to cruising.
They also seem to be either very happy with the batteries, or hate

When we have been sailing in the Med we had a lead acid battery go bad.
Getting 31 series lead acid replacements was hard to do on Elba. When we
asked about AMG batteries they looked at us as if we came from the moon.
Going AMG is A VERY HIGH RISK choice given the limited benefits of fast
charge you are better off adding a solar panel or wind gen.
As Eric pointed out once outside the U.S. Finding a replacement will NEVER
happen.
Good luck. Richard and Joan SM209

Subject: [Amel] Optima AGM Batteries

Has anyone replaced their batteries with the Optima Bluetop AGMs? They're
expensive, but the hype seems to indicate the long term payback is worth the
initial cost. Their testimonials are mostly from bass fishermen who are
using electric trolling motors, etc. and don't really apply to cruising.
They also seem to be either very happy with the batteries, or hate them...no
in between. Any experience from the forum would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve
