Dolphin Battery Chargers and Embee Striper No 1100
John and Anne on Bali Hai <annejohn@...>
I have a 30amp plus a 50amp charger. They are It seems to me programmed
sso that the 30 should be turned on first and the other after a minute od so to let the charge rate stabilise. The 50amp one does not take the volts up to 28.8 and indeed does nothing much once the volts reach about 27 whereas the 30amp one will take them up to 28.6. At one time Amel told me that the output can be increased by carefully scraping the red locking varnish off the left hand trimmer in the middle and near the bottom of the board and turning it clockwise to increase the volts. I tried this and broke the trimmer...perhaps I should have asked a technician to replace the trimmer in the first place. The chargers are standard models altered to meet Amel's spec. I sent mine back to the Reya's factory in the south of France and asked them to repair it and also to change it back to the standard spec. which they did and all has been well since. The contact is an Irish girl whose name is Lucy Kelly lucy.kelly at reya.com Eric, After spending a long time Googling I have found a supplier for the striper. contact louatantiqueboat.com and specify Embee Striper Model No 1100 for $29.99. There is a lot of help on painting the stripes if you enter words like false teak decks in the search box on this site. Would people please list the subject of their messages so that the search machine can do it's job. Regards, Anne and John SM319

Re: question on the SM engine vent loop
rbenven44 <no_reply@...>
Hi John,
Sounds right to me. The water comes out of the engine exhaust loop, not the generator exhaust. It is meant to reassure you that the intake seacock is open and that the impeller is working, without having to look over the side at the exhaust. Your observations are consistent with my experience. Hi John,
With great interest I followed your experience with the "Algae-X Fuel Filter". It sounds terrific! However, after studying the respective web-page I still have no clue what size unit I will need for my SM 143. Would you be so kind to help me? Thank you in advance. question on the SM engine vent loop
john martin <symoondog@...>
Can anyone tell me how much, if any, water is normally supposed to come out of the little pipe that vents out of the engine room from the top of the anti siphon loop above the engine, and vents/drains into the cockpit drain area just forward of the line locker for the mizzen mast ? When my engine is idling a very small amount of water comes out, and when I push the rpm above 2000 rpm, quite a lot of water comes out. When I run just the generator alone, no water comes out.

2 topics: Algae-X and the SM aft cabin vanity
john martin <symoondog@...>
Id like to thank the gentleman on this net who wrote a few years ago about installing an Algae-X fuel filter in his SM to eliminate the constant black streak problem from the engine exhaust. I bought one a year ago and have not had to clean the side of the boat since. I dont know how it works, but you just install it and forget about it, absolutely no maintenance. The best $170 I ever spent !
I also want to offer a belated response to emails some time ago about the aft cabin vanity. We never used the vanity and it occupies a lot of volume so we decided to make a cabinet out of it. See photos on this site in our folder Moon Dog. The little seat removes very easily (and can be reinstalled easily as well). We put one shelf inside, made of 16 deep household variety plastic coated wire shelving) that rests on the conduit ridge molded into the hull and is screwed to the existing bulkheads. The cabinet front is just a pices of varnished mahogany plywood, with 2 doors similar in style to the Amel doors (although we need to stain the edging dark to match the rest of the boat). We left the carpet in and the cabinet front is screwed in on each side through the existing bulkheads. All our improvements can be easily removed if needed. My wife loves it as it is a large cabinet that can hold bulky items such as linens, blankets, and many, many pairs of shoes as well. We also installed some very simple book bars in the cabin cubbyholes. We got tired of all the books dumping out whenever we had a somewhat rolly passage ! See photos on this site in our folder. Re: hot water
Ken & Judy <goldendaze@...>
I replaced the old water heater with the 11 gal. Force 10.
You can have Chuck at Sailorman order one if he doesn't have it in stock. It is 110V and engine heated. SS outside box, with aluminum tank. It is also higher and shorter, thus giving space between the heater and generator for storage. The existing hoses from the Perkins reached, with no modification. I put a epoxied plywood base to sit it on. Because of the height, I had to cut and pop rivet one corner of the ss outside box to wiggle it into the space. Whether engine or 110v water will still be quite warm the next morning. At the dock we usually only turn it on in the morning and maybe a bit in evening, rather that leave it on all the time. A big improvement over original. We also used the Force 10 three burner stove, although you have to do some cutting to get it to fit. Also much better than the old stove. Watermaker end cap removal
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
Gary, your photos of stripping down the watermaker proved invaluable. Many thanks.
I think I may be able to add one suggestion. I struggled unsuccessfully with two strap wrenches to remove the end caps, but then it came to me. Take one jubilee clip and a short length of webbing and trap the two ends of the webbing between the jubilee clip and the endcap to make a loop. Sitting in the cockpit, open a beer, put the loop over one of the cleats on the mizzen mast , hold the black tube with two hands and gently pull. Bingo! Do you have any more details on the seals for the bowthruster.
Actual sizes and where to get them? I am in Venezuela and leaving for the ABC's this week. And just noticed oily water seeping from the shaft of the unit. How about info on changing the oil in the unit while the boat is in the water? Re: hot water
Terry,
As part of the refit on my 1989 SM, I replaced the original water heater with an Isotemp all stainless steel unit. As a matter of comparison, after running the diesel for 45 minutes during the afternoon, the Isotemp water heater actually kept the water hot overnight whereas the water in the original unit was lukewarm. I picked it up from E-Marine in Ft. Lauderdale. Richard SM #5 Spice I need to replace the hot water heater in my 1989 Amel Maramu . Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Navigation
Mike Johnson
Hi,
If you are looking for an AIS receiver can I recommend www.milltechmarine.com <http://www.milltechmarine.com/> who provide an excellent AIS receiver that works well with MaxSea and C-MAP. We are using the SR162G and VHF aerial splitter with excellent results. Our only disappointment was MaxSea's inability to accept the NMEA stream of both GPS and AIS on the same COM port, however, this was easily resolved with a $5 'Y' cable.
