Hello Dimitiris,

I can say you that i had done about 100 hours of motor with the mix oil-water with out any problem. So i think that you can continue your trip, and wait for the next haul.
It is also possible to take out the mix whit a pump and a thin tube aspiring by the hole in which the litle tank is conected to the drive. In this way it is possible to take out two or three liters of the mix and replace it with fresh oil, waiting the total replacement and repair the rings.
I am sure that you have the same problem with the front propeller !
Have a good tripe in Greece where i will go with SILVIA ( sm 2000 ) this spring.

Hello Dimitris

What has happened is that your wearing bearing has worn out and has
allowed water to enter the U drive system. This is an item that
needs to be replaced every 800 hours and is not a difficult job for
a skilled person. The wearing bearing is right were the prop shaft
enters the gear housing. It is a brass ring with 3 rubber inserts.
Make sure that the inserts are oriented correctly. You should have
this repaired as soon as you can, as seawater is mixing with your U-
drive gears. Have the u-drive system flushed before adding the new
oil.

Hard not to be confused ! You are slightly wrong...the instruction is to
switch the machine on and when the high pressure pump kicks in after about
a minute, to then turn the knob to increase the pressure up to the green
section on the gauge.
The system has a salinity monitor which Amel's handbook says should be
cleaned from time to time. With a normal watermaker this monitor opens a
solenoid valve when the water passing over it is pure and closes it so that
the output goes back into the sea if the output is not desalinated
properly.
It seems that the Amel version of the Dessalator does not work in this way.
If you switch it on without turning up the pressurising knob the green
"good quality" light will come on after 120 seconds regardless at which
time you will hear a click which, I think, must be the solenoid valve
opening. This would not matter much if the machine is pressurised and makes
pure drinking water. It seems that the monitor is not connected to anything
!!!!
My understanding of Blue Marines experience is that there is another
problem with their machine so that it is not desalinating and as the
monitor is not connected salt water is pumped into their watertank.
Clearly, if this is the case, it could create a major problem in a
transoceanic voyage and as they say salt water does not improve all the
equipment dependent on fresh water (including human beings).
Perhaps I am misunderstanding the situation but no doubt this forum will
get to the bottom of it.

220/24V.
with less than 500 hours.

I wrote Patrick WAGNER, M.D. of Dessalator (dessalator@w...)
asking
a few technical information. He always replied without answering
precisely
my questions. He finally had to admit that I was right, it was a
deliberate
choice to send water, even salty, in the tanks. All that, without
any kind
of alarm, and leaving the Good Quality light on. Till when????
You can imagine the disasters it can cause on equipment which are
not
designed for salty water: pump, pipes, expansion tanks, faucets and
thermostats, anti-bacterial ceramic filters Some happened to me
without I
could understand why.

The entire equipment is not in conformity with promotional and
technical
docs and explanation which were provided on commissioning of the
boat.

I asked Dessalator to put my installation in conformity with the
spec. I am
still waiting for the answer.
Taking into consideration the high level of risk, I suggest that
everyone
should test his equipment: It is easy to see if the good quality
light gets
on according to a chronometric basis (~2 min) even without water

we will
have received the watermaker parts, and we will not be connected
before
Bonaire, in 3 to 4 weeks.

I may be confused and I am away from my boat, but it seems to me that
the operating instructions are to switch the watermaker on with the
highpressure valve fully counterclockwise UNTIL the quality light
turns green, and then adjust the high pressure to the green range. I
never did understand exactly what quality the green light is
'measuring' since in theory the watermaker would not be making any new
water at that point. Certainly hope this all gets clarified, and in
English as well as French.

deliberate
choice to send water, even salty, in the tanks. All that, without
any kind
of alarm, and leaving the Good Quality light on. Till when????
You can imagine the disasters it can cause on equipment which are
not
designed for salty water: pump, pipes, expansion tanks, faucets and
thermostats, anti-bacterial ceramic filters Some happened to me
without I
could understand why.

The entire equipment is not in conformity with promotional and
technical
docs and explanation which were provided on commissioning of the
boat.

I asked Dessalator to put my installation in conformity with the
spec. I am
still waiting for the answer.
Taking into consideration the high level of risk, I suggest that
everyone
should test his equipment: It is easy to see if the good quality
light gets
on according to a chronometric basis (~2 min) even without water
production and if there is no voltage arriving at the salinity
probe.

Thanks for your inquiry. We will send you more info when we find a computer that we can upload to. We average 180 miles per day on ocean passages. Our best day is 196 miles. The boat is fastest downwind. Mr. Amel raced this particular boat across the Atlantic averaging 8.4 ks and came in 3rd over all in the Trans-Alizees. She is a 1985 model launched in late 1984. I would definatly not want just the autopilot as my only means of
steering. Do you know if the rod can be removed form the cable and be
repaired or replaced?

My Super Maramu was in Grenada for Ivan. Thankfully she does

to be heavely damaged. However, one of the steering rods that
attaches to the rudder quadrant was bent. Does anyone have any
experience in replacing this item.

In order for me to get the boat out of Grenada I need to

repair this item.

can the rod assembly be replaced without replacing the entire
cable.

Has anyone steered the boat with just one rod attached.

I will be selling my 1985 Sharki shortly. She has brand new sails, new
Robertson autopilot [integrated with chartplotter]), new Raymarine color
Radar, Chartplotter with C-Map NT+++, depth/fishfinder at the helm and chart
table, GPS, batteries, alternators, the Perkins 4-108 50hp diesel has less
that 100 hours after a complete rebuild, new Plexiglas, new lines, etc. I
was preparing to take her to the Bahamas and sail for the next few years.
