Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Wind vane self steering and wind generator gear for Santorin or SM
Robin Cooter <robincooter@...>
HI,
We have a Hydrovane on our Santorin Sloop which we have been very happy with. A key point is that Hydrovane already have a design for a Santorin which takes the shaft down through the lower step which means that you don't have to lean right out to make adjustments to the vane and there is more security for the instalation. It also means that it can be mounted slightly off centre so that we can still use the after steps and passerelle. The other advantage is that there is no ropes ect going across the cockpit. We have our control lines fixed at the aft end of the cockpit and the lines can be demounted and stowed on the windvane when not in use - eg. no clutter! We used it on an Atlantic crossing with no problems at all. Do contact us if you need more details. Any thoughts on the ability of the Hydrovane's rudder to contol the boat vs the Monitors use of the boats rudder, especially downwind with strong winds ? Also does anyone have a recommendation for wind generators, and whether to fit it high on the mizzen or on a dedicated pole far aft ? Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bilge pump
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
hi, In our experience of living aboard on and off for 6 years the automatic bilge pump performs wonders. However, taking a tip form a Swiss Sharki owner we met about 20 years ago, we put the foot of a nylon stocking over the two pipe ends ( forward shower and galley) as they flow into the bilge in the engine room . We had Amel fit a couple of stainless pipes about 6 cm long to the existing ends of the pipes which allows us to fit the stocking on with what I call a nylon jubilee clip.
The stocking catches lot of soap, food bits etc and we just renew it every 6 weeks or so. In due course, if you dont clean out the bilge from time to time a nasty smell can work its way up the aft shower drain pipe. You will notice this for the first time in rough weather, when you least need it and can do nothing about it! The solution, of course, is to fit a simple water trap to the aft shower drain pipe just as it enters the bilge in the engine room....another job I keep meaning to do... I cant answer your first question as we have no intake cock in the forward head--it comes from the engine room but I think your surmise is correct. The perth could be transferred with the boat. If you are interested, I could make the link with the owner. Regards Paul

Bilge pump
Patrick McAneny
I just purchased a sm a month ago,and I have a couple of
questions.First,in the event that say the supply hose for the foreward head began to leak at the seacock, how would the water find its way to the bilge other than to rise to the level to where it could flow through the shower drain? What if the flow rate exceeded the drains capacity?Secondly,on my previous boats, I went to great lenght to insure nothing got into my deep bilge ,but water.I was surprised that the showers as well as as the galley sinks empty to the bilge.Does that not create a potential for the bilge to accumulate matter that could block the pump intake?

Re: Watermaker Membranes
We are not sure how to get them to New Zealand, but can tell you how
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
we got them to Trinidad. Prior to a recent trip to visit family, we had the membranes shipped to our son's address in the US. We repackaged them by inserting each membrane into a 4" PVC pipe and placed PVC end caps on each end. Then we placed the PVC pipes into a duffel bag which we checked as airline baggage on our trip back to Trinidad. We strongly recommend this PVC pipe packaging because Air Water & Ice does not pack these suitable for international transit. Best, Bill & Judy Rouse s/v SECURITY SM2 #387

Hi Michael, Ian & Judy...
I am also looking to buy SW30-2521 membranes and I was very interested by your recent posts. I went to the web site of airwaterice. I got the reply that they do not ship outside US...but I am presently in New Zealand. Do you have an idea of how to get them here? Yves MARTIN d'AIGUEPERSE S.V. "BLUE MARINE" S.M.311

David Wallace
We have a Maramu and have sailed quite a bit with good friends who have a Santorin. The Maramu has more interior storage space due to the layout but the Santorin has a huge "rear garage". The Santorin does indeed appear to be faster than the Maramu, probably because the Maramu is 14T while the Santorin is quite a bit lighter.

Re: Amel Santorin wanted
almars1972 <alberto.marsini@...>
I often thought which would be the best.
I prefer Santorin as well, because it's newer, it seems like Super Maramu, it has the new C transmission from Amel, and it should be also a little bit faster. But in my understanding, also from some people at Chantier Amel, it seems that Maramu is slower but more indicated for long cruise. I don't know very well but I think that both are very good. ciao Alberto --- In amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com, "Jose_Luis Isasi" <jose.luis.isasi@...> wrote:

I bought endcaps and the connecting bobbin direct from Amel. The airwaterice cost for a membrane is $158. Same membrane direct from Dessalator is 298 Euros, ex VAT.... Take your pick.
