Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] C Drive Photos
HI Mitchell - my pleasure; glad it helped.
Regarding the design, one of my pictures show the manufacturers label on the upper unit - it was CATEP France with a Model and serial number. A google search brings up CATEP International. and I'd guess they supplied the entire unit. Amel clearly changed the specification along the way, as some of us have Aluminum housing and others steel. By the way, are you fixing a particular issue just doing PM? Regardless, if you get into a need for parts CATEP may be where to start. Cheers,

Hi Craig, I managed to get it all out and have cut back the GRP to access the bearings. Of interest my lower unit is different from yours with 6 hex screws holding the thrust bearing housing. Thanks again for getting back to me, I don't know if I could have done it without your previous posts and assistance. Many thanks Mitchell

Karen Smith,
Novamar...that's interesting. We received a non-renewal letter from them three weeks ago. It said the non-renewal was due to changes in their Underwriting. Since we are headed back to the USA (from the Caribbean) the agent went back to them with a reduced cruising area (eastern seaboard and gulf coast) and they offered insurance. The "home port" had to be FL, not GA. He said they are spreading their risk by only accepting a limited number of policies in each state. Duane Wanderer, SM#477

Hi. A PO left a spray can of vinyl adhesive on board. Whetever the odd corner has drooped it has been very efective. A quick squirt on the offending portion. Slap it up and it stays put. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Paul,
Sorry to hear that you are having some vinyl adhesion problems on your 54. As I understand things, the toxicity is an issue with the older polyurethane foams used in the vinyl headliners so should not apply to the 54.
Best,

John Clanton <jclanton@...>
Eric,
I received my non-renewal letter from Pantaenius USA in November for a February renewal date. It seems that Allianz, their major underwriter, decided to exit the US marine market. Our new policy is with Yachtinsure UK, and while the premium is 20% higher, they were the cheapest of the bunch. I am told that Pantaenius is seeking another underwriter, but it doesn’t sound like it will happen quickly. While I didn’t have to make a claim, my other experiences with Pantaenius were all positive.
I hope you have success in finding a suitable solution.

Hi Eric & Amelians,
We are a US based boat, and got our cancellation notice from Pantaenius US also. We went with Jackline, for the worldwide coverage. We also liked Novamar. We did a LOT of shopping and comparisons. We will likely do a blog post about it, once we get a chance. It was a big hassle! Karen Smith s/v Harmonie SM #160

Me too. I had understood that the problem was only with older boats, but obviously not the case. The thought of removing and re-doing these is very off-putting given the toxicity of the material.

Hi everyone;
Since we are on the subject of the headliner issues on the older Amels, I’d like to address some issues we are having on our A54, hoping for a good solution from someone who has tackled it.
On Kokomo, we have certain areas, mainly in the corners and inside the cabinets in the master, that the headliner sags or the corners are peeling off. We can get it to reattach by sliding our hand on it and pushing it back up, but this will repeat, within a day or two. The amount of area of sag is not significant and mainly out of sight, so it has not been a priority. However, we would like to address it, before it becomes worse.
Anyone else had this issue? All suggestions, would be appreciated.
Happy Sailing;

I contacted Pantaenius about next year’s insurance. They said they lost their primary company and are cancelling all policies here. They will be acting as brokers to try to find me insurance. Has anyone else run into this problem and have you found a suitable insurance company? Fair Winds Eric Amel Super Maramu #376

Re: Bottom paint removal problem
Hi Mark, I wasn't aware of soda blasting so thanks for the new info! The equipment looks fairly cheap as does the blasting soda. Maybe you could just do it yourself if the yard allows it? You would need a way to contain the dust and old bottom paint being blasted off but heavy plastic or cloth drop cloths should work for that. Thank you, Justin Hopeful future SM/SM2k owner

Re: Leaking water heater
Given the speed an frequency this is happening, you may want to check for galvanic corrosion. If the ground cable on your water-heater is somehow carrying a voltage potential this may cause accelerated corrosion of the tank, especially with the high temperatures inside the tank.
My water heater lasted about 10 years before a leak developed between the tank and the engine-cooling-water circuit resulting in water being pushed into the cooling circuit. The tank itself still looked very good. Also be aware sediment may accumulate inside the tank causing places where crevice corrosion can happing much faster. Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121
