i do not believe the gold solenoid (made by valeo) was your problem.
the yanmar has a floating ground and the solenoid only closes the
negative side so the starter motor will work.
i believe your problem is probably the black relay (from yanmar)
just forward of the gold valeo solenoid.

Claude,
We spent most of last winter in the Rodney Bay Marina leaving Los Libres for
4 - 6 weeks at a time. No problem noticed with security and we found the
services offered were very good. We have not left the boat unattended in Grenada.

security Windward Islands

I intend to base my SM in the Windward Islands this
winter. Most probably Grenada at the Yacht Club Marina
in St. George's or St. Lucia at the Rodney Bay Marina.
I know both and both have seemed safe. A recent issue
of Yachting World suggests otherwise, even speaking of
"all the time crime" on Grenada. The boat will be left
untended for about 4-5 weeks; the rest of the time,
when we're not aboard, there will be a female crew on
board, alone, and her security would also be a
concern, if there is cause. Both these facilities
represent that they have 24 hour guard.
I'd be interested in any thoughts regarding (a) the
boat's security at these facilities, and (b) the
crew's security on the respective islands.

starting problems. I had a technician look at it today, and he believes that
the gold colored shutoff relay (solenoid?) located on the port side of the
engine was getting stuck. We added some lubrication, and it seems like the
problem is solved. However, I wouldn't be sure until we have used the engine
for a few more days.

which creates a "hot-spot" which causes premature failure. If you

the bulb while installing, take a CLEAN cotton cloth with
denatured alcohol
and wipe the bulb, allowing it to evaporate before you turn it
on. I've
tested halogen and regular incandescent bulbs and this "no touch"
rule
really works on almost every bulb on the boat.

I can't wait until they perfect L.E.D. lights!

with respect to the soot on the side of the hull i noticed it from
the first day i started the engine i just thought this was normal

i would like to hear from other sm owners if this is normal on
their boats.
do you have the 4jh3hte engine?

as I am sure many of you are aware, there are big changes happening in the boat insurance world. My previous insurers are tightening up and it looks like single handed sailing, which we all know is a breeze on an Amel, may not in future be covered.

Does anyone know of a good company that will provide single handed cover for a Maltese registered Super Maramu 2000 in the areas of the N. Atlantic, Caribbean and Pacific please?

This problem is not specific to the Yanmar it happens as well with the Volvo. Before replacing the solenoid I would recommend you to check the starter relay which may be faulty.

I had the same problem. the amel mechanic in the canaries found that
the black starting relay on the port side of the engine was
defective. no problems since that time. it is not the starter motor
solenoid and not the valeo gold colored solenoid, but a black yanmar
relay.
