Re: Size of main anchor for Super Maramu

Hi Steven,

We are still waiting for delivery of our 47kg Mantus anchor, but the research I did on the working load of the 1200W Lofrans winch provided proof that the winch will handle raising the anchor and chain, providing good anchoring techniques are used ie motoring up to the anchor and breaking out the anchor by motoring over it rather than using the winch. The maximum pulling power of the 1200W Lofrans winch is well with in the limits of raising the weight of 80m of 10mm chain and 47kg anchor, should you ever require to do this, ie drag anchor into deeper water. I will test our winch however to be certain as part of the trials once we have have our new anchor on board. We will not change our current 10mm anchor chain. Kind regards Ross and Donna SV INTREPID KIWI

Sailing performance Mango vs Super Maramu
Hello,
I am on the market for Amel. Have seen Mango and Super Maramu. At first I was very much into Mango but after inspecting Super Maramu I am more into SM now. I would very much appreciate any insight about the differences of two boats. Like sailing perfomance, systems.... regards, Slavko

Hi Stephen,
We have the 47kg Mantus and the windlass handles it just fine. We did install the Mantus Anchor Mate so that it sits properly when raised. We also use their swivel, snubber, headlamps and are very happy with all of their products. Karen Smith SM Harmonie #160

Re: Lock downs on floor boards
Hi all & Bill,
I recommend that this kind of conversation and personal opinion of a fellow Amel owner Is kept out of this forum. This is obviously a matter between the two persons and are better kept on a private level, since it add no value to the rest of us Lets keep a good tone to each other, -- Carina SV Ultimo Amel 54 No 165

Hello Bill et al,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
These latches were installed by Amel at the yard during the build. (Sometimes... Amel did some customisation to get a sale) The first owner was a Luxemburger (Jean-Pierre Friedrich) and when he ordered, he was either on his second or third Amel; apparently, the yard hid the boat to prevent Mr Henri from seeing what the marketing people had agreed to do beyond normal in order to secure the sale. The original owner was also looking at an HR unless he got some changes accepted. For instance, the single in the salon is in fact a double on this boat. Additionally, all watertight doors are reinforced substantially and have large internal locks to prevent cabin access in event of an unfriendly boarding. Add this one to your unusual anecdotes at Amel. For other options, reach out to the new owner of 444... he has latched floor boards. Done in Europe to a very high standard. BTW, Aquarius is lovely Cheers, Jean-Pierre Germain SY Eleuthera, SM 007, NZ

Many thanks for your reply about fitting a 105 Mantus anchor!
I would be very grateful if you would advise me if you, or other Amel owners you know, increased chain size or windlass size etc when fitting the new Mantus anchor, in order to cope with the extra weight involved.
Many Thanks,
Steve Nicholson

Re: Lock downs on floor boards
JP, Ken, et al None of the other hundred or more SMs that I have been aboard had PERKO latches. Perco is a Florida company. If anyone is interested in the latches shown in the photos that were added to this SM, here is the contact information:
I am not sure where in Europe Amel sourced the latches that Amel optionally installed on SMs. Regarding the installation of floor latches/locks, I have always believed that having the floor hatches locked in case of a roll inverting the boat would be the least of my worries. That said, BeBe SM 387 had Amel installed latches and they were not Perko.

Re: Recommended solar panel brand
Porter McRoberts
As I understand it, series vs parallel is a trade off. In series, in full light, there is reduced impedance because of the higher transmission voltages to the MPPT ostensibly close to the batteries. In parallel, higher resistances( 3x) because 1/3rd the transmission voltage, but when shading one panel you still have 2/3 the amperage at the same voltage that you had with no shading.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
So it’s a trade off. For us: we went with series installation as our plan was less time around other masts and more time in Anchorages and sailing. I’d love to see actual numbers. Never sure I made the right choice, except I run the genny for water and laundry only now, so solar has been a big improvement over all. Porter A54-152 Excuse the errors. The Amel installation includes a Victron 150/35 MPPT controller. I have observed that shading is definitely an issue. As the sun makes its way around, there are always times when the mizzen boom, mizzen mast, SSB whip antenna and even the US ensign makes a minor amount of shade, resulting sometimes in a big drop of output. I have no experience with panels that do not have blocking diodes So I’m wondering how much worse the impact of shading would be. I also wonder why Amel installed the panels in series rather than Parallel as there is a tradeoff im sure.

Re: Recommended solar panel brand
Paul,
We have 3 x 250 W solar panels on an arch with Schottky diodes, whether its better with or without I don't know since we installed them from new. We also rarely run the generator except when leaving / arriving in port, lifting the anchor, heating the water, solar takes care of most of our needs. We have 5 year old AGMS (3 banks of 4 x 6v in series with balancers) which are still performing well. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Hello again,
Many thanks for all your valuable comments! One additional question for those people who have upgraded to the 47kg (105 lb) Mantus option on their SM. Does your windlass cope OK with the weight of the 47kg anchor plus anchor chain, or have you had a BIGGER windlass installed to handle the extra weight? Many thanks for your help!
