Re: Perkins M50 Alternator

Craig Briggs

Hi Bob,

Yes, I swapped out the original with an Amp Air 125A unit. There were 4 issues to deal with:
1. The supplier had to reweld the mounting tabs from their standard "12 o'clock - 6 o'clock" positions to the "10-2" positions that the engine needs (a routine procedure for them.)
2. I had to put on a new adjusting bar (an off the shelf "universal" bar from an auto parts store, but it took some looking.)
3. The pulley diameter and therefore rpm of the hi output alternator is different than the original, so I had to recalibrate my tachometer using a borrowed strobe unit.
4. The added load on the single V belt is right at it's strength limit and I had to cut back the alternator output to 80 amps to keep from breaking the belts - which sort of defeats the whole idea!

With 20-20 hindsight, I'm not sure I'd bother.

Incidentally, I seem to recall the factory alternator is more like 60 amps and wonder if the 40 amps you're seeing might be a function of your regulator appropriately feathering back the output current as the batteries become charged.

Cheers,
Craig Briggs - Santorin #68, SANGARIS

Re: [Amel] Perkins M50 Alternator

Arca di Noè

It is possible to change one alternator with higher amperage if you have space in the motor and right place.
We changed our alternator 40 amps on the Perkins 80 and put one of 105 amps: now it is ok!.
Good job!!

Has anyone swapped out the alternator on the Perkins M50 for one that is higher amperage? Mine produces a maximum of about 40 amps 12vdc.

Re: {Disarmed} [Amel] Bilge Sump Grounding Nut

John and Anne Hollamby <annejohn@...>

Hello Bob,
The nut is no problem as it sits on top of the grounding strap and the nut that holds the keel is under that.
The simple way to loosen or tighten the grounding nut is to get a piece of 1/2 inch square rod, assuming that is the size of your socket set, to use as an extension piece. I found this at a steel stockist but if you have any difficulty the more expensive solution is to buy proper extension pieces.
Put sump grounding strap in the search box as about a couple of years ago there was alot of info posted including a very useful drawing with bends and dimensions.

Good luck, Anne and John, SM 319

I'll probably replace my grounding strap in the bilge sump. The nut at the bottom of the bilge looks like it is screwed on a keel bolt, like the nuts at the bottom of the water tank.

Should this nut be tightened to a certain torque?

Should it be painted with epoxy like the water tank nuts? What is it's composition?

Thanks.

Bob

Bob,

The 30mm nut at the bottom of the sump bilge does NOT support the keel.

Super Maramu No 140 SULA 1995 for sale

Graham Boyd

Dear all,

It is with much regret that due to a move to the far East, we must put this great yacht on the market.

She has been lovingly maintained and is in excellent condition for her age. She has had many upgrades from the standard 1995 spec and has newly painted deck stripes, new sails, dish washer, washing machine, micro wave, water maker membranes....etc..etc.. In short she is ready to go where ever you want to take her.

SULA is lying on the Clyde in Scotland and is very favourably priced (205000 GBP) for anyone buying in US$ or Euros. If you are interested or know any one who might be ready to "take off" this year, contact me here or at grahamgb44@hotmail.com for full details and photos.

Re: [Amel] Hurth Gearbox

Hi Joe,

We have a Perkins 90 with hurt gearbox 1985.
We had broken the interior of the gearbox in 1999 in Dominican Republic.
We ourselves removed the gearbox.
It is not necessary to take off the motor.
It is not necessary to put the boat out of the water.
We took the gearbox to the Perkins Assistance.
Now it is ok!!
GOOD LUCK!!

Hello Everyone
It happened, I put a jinx on our Perkins Prima 50 by saying how reliable and sturdy they were. Well its the 17 year old Hurth gearbox that has developed the problem, namely a cracked housing led to an oil leak, which in turn has now led to the need to replace the gearbox.
Before we start the job of replacing the gearbox, has anyone done the same on a Santorin and what is the process involved. Does the engine have to be removed to replace the gearbox?
As always it is a great help to tap into the knowledge, that the members have developed over the years.

I always thought that our boat did not point very well. I had the occasion
to leave Bermuda last year an hour after an Oyster 62 left and we made
Montauk Point on Long island. He was only able to make Nantucket Island
about 50 miles further down wind. We beat him home by 14 hours and a lot
further upwind..

Onan MDKV water flow shutdown problem

svbebe <yahoogroups@...>

Our Onan shut down shortly after starting with a low water-flow problem indicated. Normally this indicates a impeller replacement, but I had recently replaced the impeller and I also noticed that the generator was pumping plenty of water when it shutdown.

The problem was a clogged water-flow sensor/switch. You might want to see the photo I posted in the photo section by following this link:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amelyachtowners/photos/album/474221197/pic/list

We had not started the Onan for several weeks because we have shore power. My guess is that rusty clog hardened with inactivity.
