Hi Phil ,Hope you get a lot of pleasure from your Santorin .Your surveyor
gave you very good advice .Stainless steel "work hardens" and becomes more
and more brittle every time it goes through a load-unload cycle .It can look
brand new and fail without warning .15 years should be considered a full
life for even the finest quality rigging .When you do replace the rigging
,look into mechanical end fittings like Norsemen or Stalock in stead of
swaged fittings as they are stronger .You will sleep better with the larger
size chain .

hello everyone,

i've just bougth a amel santorin 1994 in the Med.We are planning to
leave the med april/ may next year.Through the red sea or via
Gibralter Atlantic we don't know yet.

We had a survey done wich was overall quite positive (she's a clean boat
wich didn't cruise that much)Previous owner kept her in a permenent
mooring in a marina and did some daysailing i presume.

The surveyor had 2 remarks about the rigging being 14 years old and
better should be changed allthough it doesn't show any signs off teare
and weare?Does anyone have any advise or experiance with this and what
this would cost?

Second there is an 8mm galvenised anchorchain with a 20 kg cqr anchor
wich i am planning to replase by a 30kg type bugel,spade or rocna
anchor.The surveyor said the 8mm chain is to ligth for a 14m boat off
about 11 or 12 ton loaded and should be changed by a 10 mm chain?
Does anyone have any experience or advice on this?

Hi Ian,

The link below your message takes me to an Iron Man game. I am afraid to a
Copper Man! I think it is cinema related which may be why Indiana Jones came
up for someone else. CopperCoat sounds interesting. Copper cladding was
after all the solution used by sailing vessels of yesteryear, and so it
should work. I tried adding an antibiotic powder to the paint a couple of
years ago. So far it's been OK though I do have to brush off the occasional
loose growth occasionally. But then I have been marina bound for most of
that time, though I hope to be on the move for a while in a couple of weeks
time.

I spent over (1) one year in Banana Bay Marina and know almost
everyone there . It has a wonderful relaxed atmosphere and a very good
staff. Bruce Blevins runs the place and will do anything to make your
stay comfortable. You will not want to leave----I know I did not ! Ask
for RUDY to maintain your boat and it will look factory new at very
reasonable price---he spends all day polishing. The marina restaurant is
good and I hope Fernado is still the cook---he did a outstanding job
with fresh fish. Golfito has a interesting history and if development
occurs a good future. The only problem is remoteness and limited air
flights out. Sailing in is easy and safe---also like most of South
America replacement parts are hard to get.

'Scuse my enthusiasm for this subject but I have now been prompted to reread through all the Coppercoat website and I'm now keener on the stuff than ever. It is indeed inert and so you can leave your boat ashore without any loss of effectiveness; some people use a power wash to get the slime off once a year--others don't bother.I suspect that if you actually take your boat out sailing the slime ain't an issue....one customer actually comments "it was helped by the fact that we used the boat twice this season"!!! Some people give the the hull a quick rub down with a scotchbrite pad or similar just before each annual launch to ensure that the copper is exposed: others never take their boat out of the water.Many have used Coppercoat for 5-10 years and it is still going strong.
It's clear that there were at least 6 competing producers who got it wrong and went out of business. A number of them had similar names as they obviously all wanted to advertise the fact that they had copper in their product, so if someone tells you that he used"it" and that "it" didn't work you might check precisely whose product he used.
Although it can be applied by anyone, the secret , once you have your hull prepared, is to only mix small amounts at any time and get it on quickly. Small? One litre at a time, to ensure that the copper is well mixed. I suspect that you would benefit from having one person mixing and two applying, but I'm going to get it done for me by some guys who do it for a living.
I begin to sound like a salesman for the product. Do check out their website if you are interested. I have also found them to be quick and detailed respondents to my emailed enquiries.

Hi Everyone:

I have posted some photos in the photos section of the outhaul gearbox components and the
Anderson Winch disassembled, (see SM Out Haul Service) This is for my Amel SM 2001.

I tried removing the drive shaft by the method of using a long steel bolt inserted into the
bottom of the drive shaft. Despite two days of penetrating oil and pounding on the bolt with
a 2 pound sledge until I though I would damage the boom I was unable to loosen the drive
shaft. I enlisted the help of a A1 Marine Services in Jolly Harbour, Antigua and they came
with the largest puller I have ever seen and clamped onto the gearbox upper seal area and
pushed the drive shaft out with the pullers long screw. Even then it was tough going. I
intend to completely overhaul this unit and paint it. It appears to me that the paint failed due
to poor primer application. Both the outhaul and mainsail furling gearbox's paint failed in
the same manner. I suspect that both gearboxes are similar.

Anybody else out there completed this overhaul of the gearbox that knows if there is a
thrust bearing of some sort at the end of the worm drive gear? I came home from the boat
before completely disassembly and need to order parts.

had excellent results which is why the company I have approached is now able
to boast some big manufacturers who use their product.

Hi Howard and lynda,

I have an Amel Maramu 1979. The mizzen backstay is a single stay
ending in the centre of the deck close to the transom. I have to say
that we do have a position on the rail (pushpit) that was probably its
original position, this would not be as strong.

The foremast does have two stays that meet the deck via the stainless
tubing holding the cockpit roof up. she (Orion1) also has an
additional backstay in the centre that attaches alongside the point
that the mizzen is stepped. This stay is our HF antenna (aerial in UK
english) Hope this helps Deb

PS do you also have a prop driven alternator ?? This can be switched
in when sailing at 5knts or more to provide power for your electronic
auto pilot. (I note that your engine was missing when you bought the boat)

Deb, I also have a Maramu and have investigated replacement headliner material. Sailrite has a padded vinyl type material that I saw at some boat shows. They also carry non padded material. Their web site is www.sailrite.com. --Bill Klein

A local yard used to do that system and stopped after a few years. I
don't think the stuff was lasting much longer than a good high
quality paint. I'm also not convinced it would pencil out
financially. There's so many other reasons you have to haul a boat
other than for bottom paint. Cutless bearing replacement, thru-hull
maintenance, shaft work, and a lot of other things can create the
need for a haulout. For me it's just not that big a deal doing a
bottom job every two or so years. The Maramu we just bought had not
been painted in about 3.5 years and it looked surprisingly good for
old paint.

One question I'd ask before going with Coppercoat is if the boat can
be hauled and left out of the water for a period of time in case you
do need to haul for maintenance or to get the boat out of the water
for hurricane season. I know some paints can't be exposed to air for
more than 48 hours without needing a recoat.

I have written before of my interest in Coppercoat and have now
taken my
enquiries further. Olivier Beaute hadn't heard of it and asked
whether the
content of copper was sufficient to cause any electrolysis
problems. The
manufacturers in the UK ( very ready correspendents) assured me
that the
issue had never arisen with the thousands of boats already treated.
I tracked down four businesses in the UK that put on Coppercoat.
The most
enthusiastic was Paul Hockey of Symblast ( Southampton)who races
and has
Coppercoat on his own boat. He would sandblast the existing
antifouling back
to the gelcoat, taking the iron keel back to bare iron. He would
then paint
the iron keel with four coats of CorroTech low solvent
aluminiumised epoxy .
The hull would then have a single coat of solvent free epoxy
followed by
four coats of Coppercoat ( itself an epoxy with 18% copper powder).
Blasting the hull and keel clean would take about 3 hours and the
rest of
the work would be completed within two weeks, weather permitting.
Cost? about £4,800 + VAT at 17.5% ( ie about US$10,000 all in)
Life? At least ten years in his experience. ( and then presumably
you would
not have to go to the intial lengths described above before you
added more
Coppercoat)
Quality? Paul has never seen a barnacle on Coppercoat. A layer of
slime can
appear after a few months but that easily brushes off if you are
swimming--no high pressure hosing etc.
If anyone else wants to do it in the UK , please avoid using Paul
in the
last two weeks of August 2009--that's our slot!It is aavailable
pretty well
everywhere except Sweden (and probably California , where I expect
before
long it will be forbidden to even put a boat in the water....)
We shall return to Trinidad in November knowing that we are about
to paint
on antifouling for the very last time! Yippee!!
