1990 Santorin and B&G Hydra 330
Judy Rouse <judyrouse@...>
Not sure about the Hydra 330 FFD; definitely can be done from a Hydra 2000.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Have you read message #155 for the technical info provided by B&G tech support regarding how to get the NMEA signal out of a Hydra FFD? That question related to connecting B&G Hydra-GPS-Autopilot. Partial clip from message #155: "B & G technical support: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THE NMEA INPUT OUTPUT terminals on the Hydra processor (i.e. the B & G computer) Instead the NMEA connections must be made through a NMEA FFD on HYDRA systems. B & G tech support states: The solution will be to locate your NMEA FFD, and connect the wires from your Raytheon as follows: Raytheon NMEA Output (+) Brown NMEA Output (-) Blue NMEA FFD NMEA Input (+) Violet NMEA Input (-) Black The wire shield is grounded by connecting to the other grounds at the hydra processor. The above wires are from the cable coming from the Hydra 2000 display. You will find that they are capped. Just pigtail them together as indicated." I don't have the pin schematic on hand for the serial connections; left that info on the boat. We did these connections from our Hydra 2000 to Maxsea on laptop. Works great. Don't know if it will work for an older model like the 330; but since it is labeled as FFD, it might. Passage Help on Amel SM 2000
Bill <junk@...>
I've been following this message board for some time. I'm having a difficult time deciding between a well found catamaran and a well found mono hull such as the Amel SM 2000 or Amel 54 which is my favorite. I recently sailed a 56" Fountain-Pajot cat on a 1500 nm passage from MD to BVI and believe I understand their motion and other characteristics. I would like to sail on an Amel SMM in a similar way to compare and make my decision. If any one is in need of help on a passage please contact me. I'm a professional business owner with sailing experience. More info on request.

Maintenance and brushing up
John and Anne on Bali Hai <hollamby@...>
Hello Ian and Judy,
Thanks for the info. We did serious damage to our anchor winch last year as I had failed to grease the cones and as it is our practice to drop the anchor quickly sometimes by releasing it and then stopping it with the clutch the dry cones grabbed and stopped the chainto a full stop whilst it was running out at speed thus severely damaging the keys and one of the cones. the autopilot motor is probably the hardest working one on the boat and on our last boat it failed after about 40,000 miles (I think). The cause was that brush wear had filled the motor casing with carbon dust.It took some time to get new brushes sent to Fiji. We also had problems with the drive unit after about 15,000 miles as the drive gears on the epicyclic clutch were made of some plastic or nylon which wore out. A replacement set cost £12.50 but brass ones were priced at £125. Autohelm(now Raytheon) assured me (circa 1995) that brass was only necessary for boats over 65feet long! I bought three sets of plastic as spares and was very popular with a couple of owners in the South Pacific when I sold them on. Olivier has assured me that Amel use the brass ones but whether this was always the case I do not know. All the best, John

Re: California sales tax exemption
dkhackney
Peter,
To my understanding, you are correct. You can learn the details from: Cris John Wenthur, LL.M. Wenthur & Chachas LLP 4180 La Jolla Village Dr., Suite 500 La Jolla, California 92037 (858) 457-3800 - Tel (858) 457-3691 - Fax (619) 276-4506 Home Fax & Emergency Tel Email: cris@wenthur-chachas.com Cris can email you a PDF overview of the sales tax law for CA. Cris is a maritime attorney I was referred to by a yacht broker here in San Diego. The short version is you can take delivery offshore. There are resulting limits on how many hours you can use the boat in CA waters during the first year for purposes other than initial repair/refitting/commissioning. It's a big issue out here because they recently changed the time the boat needed to be out of the state to pay no sales tax from 90 days to one year. It is my understanding that in order to keep the boat there, many states will require you to pay their local sales tax or the difference between the local sales tax and the sales tax you paid at the time of the purchase of the boat. Sales tax rates for boats vary widely by state. I have been told that NC has a maximum of $1,500 sales tax on boats. In addition, some states, including CA, charge you property tax on the boat if it is kept there. I think it is a good idea to work with a local CA maritime attorney if you are going to do an offshore delivery here to ensure you are doing things properly. I am not an attorney, so please do not consider any of this information authoritative or definitive. be well, Doug --- In amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com, "pjppappas" <pjppappas@y...> wrote: California; then I would be eligible for sales tax exemption. California sales tax exemption
pjppappas <pjppappas@...>
I am a non California resident who is seeking to purchase an Amel
which is based in California. I have been advised that if I purchase and take possession of the vessel outside of 3miles, and that my intentional use is to take the vessel out of the state of California; then I would be eligible for sales tax exemption. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of this or better yet can anyone refer me to a California Maritime or Sales Tax Attorney. Thank you Peter Pappas

Maintenance, a couple of experiences
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
Our SM is 5 and a half years old and has sailed about 25,000 miles and been lived aboard on and off for about 3 years. Today I checked the brushes on the motors on the genoa, Lofrans, boom and mast. Removing the covers was straightforward, though the boom and mast motor covers took a bit of pulling to break the silicone seal. There was no evidence of water ingress. The motors all looked as though they had been fitted yesterday. There was virtually no wear on any of the brushes ( about 2 millimeters on the genoa.)
The only brushes I have replaced so far have been on the freshwater pump. On the Lofrans Olivier Beaute had advised me to remove the inner cone to check the key.( I have always greased the outer cone but not removed the inner cone before ). When I came to check it the key way on the inner cone had a small fracture which had prompted the key to twist in its slot, thankfully without damage to the shaft. It just made it very difficult to get the inner cone off.Lofrans have an excellent web site where you can download an exploded plan of the Tigres and a parts list ; thankfully the boat is still ashore , as the prospect of sailing without an anchor winch is not an appealing one. Weatherdock
tonic102004 <paebersold@...>
Dear all
I am considering buying an Weatherdock SR1 system. Is anybody from the Amel comunity using this PC-based Watherdock system? If so, how does it work, how is the quality of the reception of weatherforecasts, Navtex and other maritime informations in the different aeares such as MED,atlantic, caribean see, pacific etc...? Is this a good solution that can replace Navtex systems and other weather and martime info systems? Thanks for any feedback. Paul SM227

Bimini and full cover
John and Anne on Bali Hai <hollamby@...>
Hello Ian and Judy,
I did not have the full cover. When I got the boat I had Amel put two windows in the bimini, both about 50 cms wide, in the front and middle panels over the helmsmans seat so that I could see the telltales that I had fixed to the luff of the genoa ( the lowest ones being low enough down the luff to be visible through the vinyl windows) together with telltales sewn on to the leach of the main and camber stripes on both sails so that I can check halyard tension by looking up through the windows. We also made some suncovers which were secured to the clips for the bimini cover and elastics with hooks on them to hold the covers to the back rail of the bimini. these covers we used to stop the helmsman being roasted in the midday sun. They were made out of that cheap plastic mesh used to screen plants etc. from wind and sun. It worked very well except that we did not keep the windows covered 99% of the time so that after three years the vinyl became opaque though U.V. I had these windows replaced in 2004 in Croatia by an upholsterer who was grossly incompetent and made a terrible job of it. By this time the bimini still worked very well but was suffering from staining from the Sahara dust which comes up from Libya on southerlies so I ordered the new set from Amel. We have hardly used the boat this year as I had a hip replacement in June after fracturing the top of the femur in early May and so the old bimini is still in use. On reading your message I have been to the boat and opened the box to look at the new one. The box contains new sidescreens and bimini cover and of course the bimini. I had specified windows as before but unfortunately they have put the two windows one either side of the centre line which means I will have to have the front window inserted by a local sailmaker so that it is easy to see the genny telltales without having to lean right forward to look through the windscreen. Although I have not fitted it I have no doubt that it will be a perfect fit. It is better than the last one as the short seams above the front bar is now welded or glued istead of being sewn and so will not be a leaky dirt trap. A big bonus to the windows is that they are covered by white vinyl which is secured at the front and sides with velcro and thus can be rolled back and held in place with velcro strips. It seems that there is more wind in South America than Malta !! Regards, John

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Full cover and HF Radio
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
hi John, As a matter of interest why did you replace your bimini? And did the replacement fit ok? I think our SMs are about the same age ( June 2000). We replaced our side windows a year ago and are wondering how much longer our bimini will last. It looks fairly worn now but is still wind and weather proof .we leave it in place all the time. It recently survived Uruguays biggest blow since 1944.. a day long storm which peaked at 197 kph.I agree with you about Amels replacement price which I thought quite reasonable but we are in the wrong part of the world.

Full cover and HF Radio
John and Anne on Bali Hai <hollamby@...>
Hi there,
For what it is worth I bought a new bimini and side curtains from Amel fot substantially less than the price I was quoted in Malta. This may be because a local supplier has to make templates etc and probably alter the finished product if they get it wrong. Amel sent the covers overland to my UK address cheaply and very quickly. On the radio question enter HF Radio and Ham Radio in the search box at the bottom of this page to see previous comments. Note that since first using the search facility I realise that ifyour message is on two points they should both be included in the subject space above to facilitate a search in the future. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] full-cover
svmalaika@...
Giovanni,
I have received some instructions on how to post photos. I'll try in the next few days and let you know. The full cover zips onto the back of the folding dodger and extends aft to two stainless rods that attach to an eye under the mizzen boom and extend out to the top shroud. You should see a stainless sleeve on the shroud at about the height of the mizzen boom where the rod sits. Then the cover extends downward, sloping aft to a stainless rod that is placed under the aft deck rails. It is easy to install, very secure (held up in over 60 knots of wind) and you could sail with it up if necessary. Regarding the SSB, I have a Furuno FS-1562-15 that was installed by AMEL. It works very well, but if I did it again I might consider an ICOM. The whip antenna, also installed by AMEL, is at the starboard aft corner of the deck, immediately over the antenna tuner which is mounted in the lazarette locker. The antenna is mounted on a deck fitting and held by a bracket outside the aft rail. This allows it to be lowered if necessary. Ciao, Charlie S/V MALAIKA II Barcelona, SPAIN

full-cover
Hi Charlie,
first thank you a lot for the informations. About the full-cover I'll ask Amel the design ( if available); in the meanwhile is it possible to have some photo ? Over all concerning details about how it is attached to the sides and to the after deck and how is the steel structure in side. About hf radio the main problem is the whip antenna and how and where to fix it to the deck on SM stern. Which brand do you have? Any suggestion will be very appreciated. Hi Bob,
Eric Freedman referred me to www.depcopump.com. It is a company with a huge inventory of all makes of pumps and impellors and should be able to help you. They supplied me with a complete motor and macerator assembly for the Jabsco Quietflush toilet for US$150 which compares with the UK price of about US$400! Regards, John
