Re: Furuno GPS Navigator GP-90
Hi Oliver,
No battery in the antenna, it is a passive device. BTW the GP-90 will run with a dead battery. The battery is only there to remember waypoints and the startup location. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Re: Top loading galley fridge/freezer used as a fridge: No?
Thanks Oliver,
Two other things if I may: Can I recommend you add the expression "Amel 54" in the description of your videos? In all my YouTube searches I did (quite a few during this stupid lockdown!) I never saw any of your videos popping up. Only when searching specifically for Vela Nautica they pop up. You website seems to have some trouble "www.velanautica.org" throws the error message "There has been a critical error on your website." on every page. Hello, You get these magnetic freezer seals custom made to your required size by any refrigeration supplier. On the counter part of the gascet you will need 20x1mm magnetic!! Stainless stripes. I sanded them from the back side and fixed them with contact Clement. In one of these posts I uploaded a picture and how to fix them. Yes, we got only a fridge and the top load freezer. No seate cooler. Oliver from Vela Nautica Amel54#39 Martinique

Hi Barry;
Keep us informed. Lithium is definitely the way to go and offers tremendous upside to lead acid.. Addressing safety concerns, is our biggest design criteria and challenge. I have many years of experience with Lithium technology in other hobbies and have seen what lithium is capable of and its associated dangers.

Hi Teun and Mohammad, Teun, I have an Australian friend who is having trouble getting insurance. Can you give me the broker that you went with, maybe the NZ broker as well. They just lost cover that they took out 2 months ago through a Caribbean crook. If anyone wants to know who the company was, please ask.
Mohammad, when the lock down is eased I am visiting Oliver who is anchored in front of me. I will be doing the same as your plan and designing the new lithium battery system. I will let you know what I find out as I progress. Things are getting better and easier every year. Can you imagine what this lockdown is doing to people. In nearly 40 years Penny and I have never gone for a month without shopping or spending any money.

Re: Washing Machine and 50 htz
Scott,
Thanks for reply.
Not sure what software; the marine electrician in VANUATU installed it on my laptop. There is a hard wire connection in the cabinet over the sink. Anyhow in the settings you can set a minimum Voltage to activate the inverter and a shut down voltage. In my settings the “activate” voltage is 26.0V. You can lower it so we set it to 25.8V but even after saving the value automatically defaults to 26.0V.
I need the inverter at night as I use a CPAP machine; frequently in the evening my voltage is between 25.85 and 26.0. The inverter refuses to kick in and I get the red low voltage light blinking on the VICTRON panel. When I start the genset it is enough to kick the voltage over 26.0V to get the inverter working and I can immediately switch off the genset and all is OK.
What I do now is that I monitor in the afternoon the voltage and when it drops close to 26.10V I switch on the inverter although I don’t need it for several hours.
BTW although set @ 26.0V in reality the inverter will not kick on until it is minimum 26.08 or 26.1V
If I would be able to have permanently the minimum kick on voltage set to 25.8 or so then I would be fine.
BTW on the yellow highlight below: I am sure that Dutch people might not like other Dutch people; I don’t think we like people in general. I have a Tshirt with: “I like Coffee and MAYBE 3 people” 😊
Can you give me the Email address of your Dutch contact with VICTRON?

Re: Ral Nr. for the red boat stripe on A54
Lior Keydar
Dear Arno
Thanks a lot for your advice. Actually I let the boat yard paint it incl. the red line on the top of the hull. I think they are very professional. They wrote me: Band waterline and band rubbing strake: sanding the strips band waterline including the rubbish
Painting with polyurethane cycle of the whole band SAME COLOR. He cannot see the original color but maybe it is possible to see it for a short after you polish it. and It is also not cheap at all... I am almost sure that they will spray the color but I will anyway ask them to use AWL-GRIP Regards Lior

Re: Ral Nr. for the red boat stripe on A54
Hi Lior,
Sorry I just noticed you were talking about the red stripe at the waterline. It does not really change the story though. The original stripe is in the gelcoat. The sun gets reflected in the water and kills the red. Again AWL-Grip is the best paint for this and I would recommend spray-paining to keep the layer thickness as thin as possible. But for the stripe you have an alternative by using striping (vinyl sticker) to replace the stripe. These vinyl foils are very durable and available in many colors. Wrapping boats is quite popular for competition boats where they want sponsor names on the hull. For companies that do these things this would be a walk in the park is my guess. Hope this helps you a bit. Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Re: Ral Nr. for the red boat stripe on A54
Hi Lior,
Most Amels suffer this problem. I was able to get the color back with 3M gelcoat restorer. That works quite good. However red is a notoriously bad color for being exposed to sunshine. Many red cars look bad after some years because of it. The red stripe is actually gelcoat and the white stripe is a sticker (striping) on top of it. The white is very close to RAL9001. The red I'm not sure, I'm guessing RAL 3011, RAL3016 or RAL3004. The point is that if you are going to repaint it, you should use AWL-Grip 2-part paint as that is one of the few paints that will hold it's shine and color at this place. Like with all paints the secret of your success is in the preparation. You cannot spend too much time on preparation. For myself I'm considering to have this spray painted professionally as polishing this rubrail every time is becoming quite the drag. Painting it also releases you from the exact color match. As long as it resembles the other reds on the boat, it is fine. You will not get an exact color match anyway as the gelcoat colors react differently to daylight compared to paint colors. You can get RAL color charts from here: https://www.ralcolorchart.com/buy-ral-color-fan-deck Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Re: Top loading galley fridge/freezer used as a fridge: No?
Hi Oliver,
I was amazed with your gutsy move to re-insulate the fridge-freezer in the galley. Impressive. For later Amel 54s this is much more complicated as these only have a half-lid on top of the fridge/freezer. I do like the replacement of the seal you did as I suffer the same problem with the poor closure of the seal. As we use this cabinet only as fridge the problem is not so bad as it was for you, but it is still annoying. Where did you get those seals from? Quick question; am I correct in assuming you have no freezer below the settee in the main cabin? In your video you only talk about two cooling installations. Kind regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna A54-121

Thanks to all, I will try to poste some fotos when I replace the battery. Does anybody know if there is a second battery in the GPS antenna? Some antennas got integrated buffer batteries to gain faster reconnection. Did Furuno use this kind of buffered antennas? Oliver from Vela Nautica Amel54#39 Martinique
