Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Deck Grooves
Joel F. Potter <jfpottercys@...>
Hello Mr. Rossi,
The problem with the dark brown deck stripes is that they are made of gel coat. The darker the gel coat, the faster it oxidizes and fades away. You can preserve new gel coat with judicious applications of proper ultra violet inhibitors. It is nearly impossible to restore faded/missing dark brown gel coat. When you polish or clean it, you are removing it. The fix is tedious and time consuming if you do it yourself or rather expensive ($1500) if you hire it out. In twenty five years of preparing used Amels for the resale market, the only real solution is to paint these stripes on with two part polyurethane paint after scrupulous preparation of the surface as directed by the instructions on the paint can. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! It will save a lot of grief. Some automotive paint supply stores (wholesale level) sell very nice narrow gauge paint rollers with a self contained paint reservoir. I have used these to good effect. Otherwise, mask and use artist camel hair brushes. The results will please you if you carefully prepare and mask the surface and if you READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Good luck. Joel F. Potter SMM # 400

Hi
I purchased the crash bar to install on my SM #283. I am not exactly sure of the best location to install it. Some of you have this feature on your boats. It would be great if you can desribe to me the location and installation done by Amel. Better yet post a picture. On another subject, I want to install the Bose speaker system on my boat. Raymarine and laptops
edmund_steele
Paul,
I upgraded my boat SM331 to the Raymarine electronics. The chartplotter / radar display uses CMAP NT (or NT+) cartridges. In order to make my laptop software compatible, so I could plan routes "offline" so to speak, I bought the Raytech Navigator program from Raymarine, plus a USB port reader for the cartridges. You can also buy an NMEA to SEATALK converter box so that you can hook your laptop into your nav system. The documentation for the Raytech navigator program is amazingly poor but the interface is fairly intuitive and the on-line help is OK. I bought the software and cartridge reader from www.landfallnav.com. Ed Steele DoodleBug #SM331

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Drogues, Parachutes and Spare Sails
Shann, Mark V <shannmv@...>
Ed, no info on drogues or parachutes, sorry. I do carry 150 m of leaded warp to trail, but as I am now sailing in coastal waters of Red Sea - Egypt, not likely to deploy.

In terms of spare sails: I have a 1984 Maramu with: - Normal cruising Main, Mizzen and Genoa. To this is added a small jib flying off the inner forestay (with permanent roller reefing). This to be used in combination with second reef points fitted in the Mizzen, so that I can sail off a lee shore even in storm conditions. Both sails permanently deployed and ready to go. Down below I also carry a No 3 Genoa and a Storm Genoa (from Amel). Hope useful, Mark (Synnefoula - Maramu)

Hydraulic Leak in SM 2000 Alma Libre
Dimitris <dkra@...>
Dear All,
I faced a problem with the SM 2000 Alma Libre which I want to share with you just in case you have the same problem in the future. We were motor sailing with 8 Knots and suddenly the boat started to slow down and the motor started to increase rpm. Immediately I reduced the throttle and opened the engine room which was messed with red colour Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). The problem started from a leak between the hydraulic gear box and the valve of the shaft break. I was able to locate the leak and stop it but I could not use the motor as the quantity of ATF I had with me was not sufficient and I was afraid that by using the motor without enough ATF I could damage the hydraulic gear box . In the mean time I spoke with the Technical department in Amel and they advised me to unscrew the large screw in the back of the shaft break cylinder in order to disable the break as it needs a lot of hydraulic pressure to be disengaged when you start the engine and I continued by sails ( 9 hours) until the next port to find and fill the gear box ATF. So carry with you at least 3 Litters of ATF it may be necessary in case of a leak.

research discovered that Lloyds companies are expensive and more importantly had crew requirements that were problimatic for the cruising couple. The company in La Rochelle cannot insure U. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] standing rigging
amelforme
HI David,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
This is a perfect example of the "not invented here syndrome". If the critic didn't invent it, it can't possibly be of any good. With all of Amel's unique features, I see this a lot. Your surveyor and rigger are wrong, and perhaps shortsighted. Ten year old standing rigging that has spent most of it's life in the tropics is ripe for replacement. Use NEW everything including pins, turnbuckles, cotter pins..everything. Have a piece of the old rigging tested to destruction. The results may shock you. Use Norseman or Staloc end fittings.l The Amel pole system is delightful, safe, and easy to employ during trade wind sailing. The pole supports should be removed annually during your comprehensive annual rigging inspection (you do inspect every inch of your rig at least once a year, right?) and then re-installed carefully. Don't over tighten them and they won't cause a problem. Folks who have trouble with these pole supports usually don't remove them for inspection and just keep tightening them, eventually crushing the 1 x 19 stainless wire. My somewhat arrogant response to those who tell me a well proven Amel concept "just won't work" (not invented here) is to tell them thanks but no thanks in regard to their future services. There are over 1000 Amel boats sailing today with the Amel pole system. 'Nuff said I hope this is helpful Joel F. Potter, 53' Super Maramu Millennium #400 CC: Olivier Beaute

My surveyor and rigger have advised me that the stainless steel brace for the genoa pole causes damage to the shrouds for the main mast. They say that the stainless steel brace should be eliminated and the Amel genoa pole should be replaced with a conventional whisker pole. This would prevent the crevice corrosion and bending of the shrouds. While it makes sense to keep the shrouds free of attachments, the Amel genoa pole is an excellent device and I like it. Have any of you experienced problems with this brace and the standing rigging. Deterioration of the shrouds? Bending of the shrouds? Failure? Has the stainless steel brace been improved to prevent problems? Have you eliminated this pole? How do you protect the shrouds?
