Re: Annualised running expenses

Hello Amelites

As we get very close to taking the plunge and buying a Super Maramu,
we would appreciate your guidance on annual costs of running a 6-7
year old boat. Advice on major refit items (rigging and sails), and
general costs would be great!
We hope you can help

[Amel Yacht Owners] inner forestay

Anne and John Hollamby <hollamby@...>

Message text written by INTERNET:amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com

Olivier Beaute at Amel told me that the easy solution is to make a kevlar
strop to put round the mast just above the spreaders and then rig an inner
forestay down to the anchor winch with a suitable tensioning device. I
cannot remember where a storm jib should be sheeted to.
I fitted an inner forestay on my last boat,(a very leaky lousy Oyster 435)
with the head of the stay fixed to the mast about three feet down from the
top and with a special through deck fitting to secure the tensioner. The
stay was tied back by the mast and only rigged (with a bagged Storm jib)
for long passages in the South Pacific. It was never used in anger in the
five years we were there and i have not bothered with Bali Hai No 319.

I'm located near La Guaira, Venezuela in Club Puerto Azul and my NECO
Autopilot , built in July 1980 was installed on my Maramu one year
later. I have a 12VDC system equipped with a reverse rotation motor
(Model G7R) a contro unit model 692CU and transmitting compass model
nm3.
The unit began failing by not making corrections to port and then
ceased to respond completely. The wiring and the units are impecable,
never in contact with water, and the electric motor works when
operated vía the contactors in the motor itself (in both directions).
The units have never been serviced and are in their original state.
No metal objects are near the compass.

I'd apreciate any help I can get with my problem.

Thanks for asking,

Alex

Has anyone installed a removable inner forestay for use with a storm
jib? What do you like or not like about it? How did you install it?

Any suggestions? (Joel Potter, any thoughts?)

Or, does anyone recommend not installing an inner forestay? Thanks.

Engine Soot - Sources and Cures

rbenven44 <no_reply@...>

Hello all,
Excalibur is now in the Chesapeake after a winter in the
Caribbean and the Bahamas. Summer destination is New England.
After 20 years of Amel ownership (Maramu & Super Maramu), I can
offer the following insights into the soot problem:
Causes: On the Super Maramu, the problem is usually caused by
running a turbo-charged diesel engine at too low RPMs. Why Amels
have turbochargers is a good question, but a turbo-charged diesel
needs to run at high RPMs to burn the fuel efficiently. On Maramus,
running at low speed causes the same problem. Soot is caused by
incompletely burned diesel, not lubrication oil. Unless the engine
is run at 2400 RPM and above (for the Volvo, probably similar for the
Yanmar), soot will form in the exhaust system, and deposit on the
outside of the hull. However, most of us don't like the noise and
fuel consumption associated with high RPMs, so we run at closer to
2000 RPM. At lower RPMs, the turbo doesn't provide enough air to the
engine, and the result is incomplete combustion.
Solutions: Run the engine hard, at least once in a while.
Otherwise, clean the hull often. I recently came across a good
product for removing soot: ROLL-OFF, sold by Boater's World (but not
West or Boat US), if applied as directed, and soon after the soot
forms, will remove it easily. Use it every day you motor more than a
couple of hours, and you won't have any soot. To get rid of old soot
the first time, follow Joel's recommendations, posted here a few
months ago.
Good sailing! Roy

Hi, I am a new member taking delivery of a SM in November. I am
looking forward to the Amel experience. She will be equipped with a
standard generator and the 100 HP Yanmar.

Could someone tell me what the average fuel consumption for the
Yanmar is as well as the average fuel consumption and run time for
the generator? I am trying to do a little trip planning and get a
feel for the fuel requirements for the Atlantic crossing.

Thanks,
Dan

Hello John

If gear oil is leaking from where the prop shaft enters the housing
the most likely culprit is the wearing bearing. This a simple
replacement and is part of Amels sheduled maintenance regiment.
Usually it is every 800 hours. The rings are made of rubber so they
may have been damaged. If you do have a leak than most likely water
has entered your gear housing so you should make sure that it is well
flushed. Also, dont wait too long to do it as salt water and metal
gears are not a good mix.

I had a similar problem on my previous boat an Amel Santorin. You can
recognise that there is a possible leak by having sea water coming in the
expansion tank in the engine room. The oil becomes an emulsion getting white
like milk. The possible problem could be a damage in the rings at the end of
the shaft which can be created by a rope or net in the propeller or by a
fishing plastic line. You can fix it easily if you have the rings haul out
the boat keep it hanging and replace the rings on the spot and bring the
boat back in the water. Be sure to order before the two rings from Amel.

Membership Change Effective Immediately

Starting today, membership in *our* Amel forum will be restricted.
No longer will individuals be able to sign up without my prior
approval. I am doing this because of the posting earlier today of a
pornographic message. This is the first time I believe we've had
this time of 'spam' posted to our forum and it'll be the last. In
the past we've had other spam, but I've erased these and banned
those users from our site.

All interested individuals will still be invited to join! I will
just ask a few questions beforehand to those that wish to join.
Generally, spammers will not go to this trouble so we should see an
end immediately to offensive posts.

I am happy to see the varied dialogue that's been generated by many
of the members. I can say that personnally I've learned a lot and
find this forum very valuable.

Many thanks to every one of you for making this a great success!

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Anchor wash pump

Ian Shepherd <g4ljf@...>

Hi Bill,

I know how you feel! I think that many of us have experienced the same problem. If you don't get a suitable replacement pump, it might be worth noting that Amel now fit a higher voltage motor to the pump which reduces the stress on the body. I fitted one to Crusader, but as she is now sold, I cannot say for sure that it solves the problem completely.

It you get a side fed pump, there should be no problem re-routing or extending the tubes. I put a pressure stat in my lines so that I could feed a deck wash point via a diverter valve without over pressurizing the pump when the hose was in the off position. It worked well, though in my new boat Amel have suggested something better. They are fitting a higher pressure fresh water pump (its a monster), and the deck wash will now be fresh water, using of course the existing pressure stat to switch the pump off.

If you do find a good replacement Bill, be sure to let us all know. Regards to Sarah.

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Unscrupulous Brokers

Thanks to the advertisement that I placed on this excellent web site some months ago, my SM 2000 "Crusader" has now been sold. However, I would like to draw your attention to what happens when you advertise your boat here. Brokers scan these pages and see an opportunity to make a commission. Bollman Yachts did this and contacted me in a very professional manner, arranged a contract between us, placed their own advertisement, and duly sold my boat. They did a first class job.

However, not all brokers are like Bollmans. Another broker (boats4ever.com) advertised my boat without ever making any contact with me at all! They told a Swiss couple that my boat was for sale, who then purchased non refundable airline tickets from Zurich to Grenada to see the boat. This broker made no contact with me regarding whether the boat was still available before they bought their tickets, and it was only by luck that their Grenada representative found out at the last moment that a sale had already been agreed on "Crusader" through Bollmans. This prevented them from actually making the trip, but as far as I know, they lost their air fares. It was subsequent to this that boats4ever.com did in fact email me saying that they had a higher offer, but I have principles and stuck with the lower offer that I had accepted through Bollman Yachts.

Whilst I should be grateful to have my boat advertised for free, the way in which this particular company went about doing so was hardly ethical. I received distressing emails, phone calls and faxes from the unfortunate Swiss couple who were very keen to buy. I feel very sorry about the way in which they were treated by boats4ever.com, and I hope that they will eventually receive rightful compensation.

I guess the lesson to be learnt is that if you advertise your boat here, it would be wise to add "not for sale through a broker unless a formal contract is made first".

Thanks to all of your who showed an interest.

Best Wishes

Ian Shepherd

Anchor wash pump

Bill & Sara Atz <WCZ4455@...>

Someone recently noted the anchor wash pump breakage problem on the
Super Maramus. My 4th pump in four years now leaks at the body, as
the others did. I am currently in Trinidad, waiting to fly back to
the US in a couple of weeks. I'd like to find a replacement pump
here if possible. Does anyone know of an appropriate choice of
pumps? It would be nice to put it in the same location, but that
requires flow from end-to-end rather than side-to-side as most
washdown pumps work. Bill on Lady Sadie
