Yanmar excessive soot

sailslady@...

Eric

On 5/13 you mentioned burning oil on your 4jh3hte. I have had "excessive
soot" on my port quarter since taking delivery 10/01 of hull #340. That is
over 800 hours. Do you also have this soot problem? I don't notice burning
oil "excessively" however.

where did you get the 28 volt bulbs

kimberlite1212 <no_reply@...>

I have also heard of the mast head tri-color being replaced with a
28 volt bulb. where did you get the halogen bulbs at 28 volts?
thanks

to
switch to 28V bulbs, as recommended by Mastervolt. I have had no
problem since, but cannot tell yet how long they will last.

Good Luck.

These

small
bottle of alcohol in the same tupperware box as the spare
halogen
bulbs. My bulb life is up dramatically.

When we talked to Amel about it a while back, they explained
that
the problem is with the "Smart Charger" (an option we bought)
because
it pushes the voltage up to 28V frequently (when you are on
shore
power) which is to much for the halogen light bulbs. This makes
lots
of sense, but it's still frustrating to switch out light bulbs
all
the time.

Does anybody else have the same problem?

Hi everybody,

what restrictions have you been talking about.
i was sailing with ARC2002 from gran canaria to st.lucia and we had a coverage problem with our insurer, solved after a while. (bavaria- germany) pantaenius has a fine reputation here in europe although beeing expensive.

any details for me?

Insurance

Ian Shepherd <g4ljf@...>

Hi Everyone,

as I am sure many of you are aware, there are big changes happening in the boat insurance world. My previous insurers are tightening up and it looks like single handed sailing, which we all know is a breeze on an Amel, may not in future be covered.

Does anyone know of a good company that will provide single handed cover for a Maltese registered Super Maramu 2000 in the areas of the N. Atlantic, Caribbean and Pacific please?

Ian Shepherd

This problem is not specific to the Yanmar it happens as well with the Volvo. Before replacing the solenoid I would recommend you to check the starter relay which may be faulty.

I have also had intermittent problems with shut down button. So far, if the
engine fails to shut down I just try again a minute or two later and it has
subsequently worked. I have had no problem with starting.
Please let me know what Amel recommends for this problem.
I have SM #369 Callisto with a Yanmar 4JH3HTE

YANMAR ENGINE PROBLEMS

I had the same problem. the amel mechanic in the canaries found that
the black starting relay on the port side of the engine was
defective. no problems since that time. it is not the starter motor
solenoid and not the valeo gold colored solenoid, but a black yanmar
relay.
fair winds,

Hi David,

most of the bridges are now 65' clearance. The SM has an air height of 20M or 65.6167979 ft to be precise. I did risk it and crept under some power cables in the Canaveral barge canal to get to Titusville to watch the shuttle take off. My FM and VHF antennas brushed 3 out of the 4 overhead power cables even at low tide. I certainly would not risk it again, especially with a solid bridge.

Good luck

ON MY SM #347 FROM TIME-TO-TIME WHEN I SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE BY
PRESSING THE KILL SWITCH, NOTHING HAPPENS (I.E. THE ENGINE
CONTINUES
TO RUN). SO I OPERATE THE MANUAL FUEL SHUTOFF ON THE ENGINE.
HOWEVER
NOW THE KEY SWITCH WON'T START THE ENGINE.
WHILE IN GUADELOUPE AMEL REPLACED THE SOLENOID AND A RELATED RELAY
WHICH WORKED FOR A WHILE, BUT THE SAME PROBLEM HAS RETURNED.
FORTUNATELY AMEL FIT AN EMERGENCY START BUTTON SOLENOID WHICH HAS
ALLOWED ME TO START THE ENGINE BY BOTH PRESSING THIS BUTTON WHILE
SOMEONE ELSE TURNS THE KEY TO START AT THE YANMAR PANEL.
ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCE THIS?

Krassopoulos Dimitris <dkra@...>

I had the same problem and I ask Amel to help me without any reply yet. It
seems that perhaps it is a problem with the shutdown solenoid as it stays
closed and it does not allow the engine to start afterwards. The problem is
not consistent on my boat but I start the engine in advance just in case I
might have a problem. I am waiting for the Amel reply and post it to you
asap.
