Re: Recommended solar panel brand

Paul:
Exactly right. I saw a test where they wired multiple panels parallel and serial and saw that partial shading from booms/sails really dropped output on serially connected panels. I was able to obtain the same results when performing the same experiment. Where do you have your MPPT? I have all six wires running from the arch to two switches (pos/neg) in the starboard side of the lazarette. With the short run and only one panel per pair for this section, I don't need super thick cables. Then I run a single pair of 13mm2 wires to the MPPT located near the boat's main switches. That fit in the conduit with room to spare and I believe the calcs showed very acceptable voltage drop even at the max 960watt output. There is some argument that the higher voltage with serial will turn on the mppt earlier since it requires (battery voltage+5v) to startup, but frankly, I am fine missing out on a few minutes of early morning sun. I'm also thinking that 35-40 volts on the parallel panels might be safer in the event of a catastrophic event. 120-130v DC could hurt. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Wind Generator/Link10 Wiring
Tim Melbourne
My wind generator is wired straight into house battery terminals, thus bypassing the Link10 multimeter so I cannot see its current generation when it's spinning fast (and producing, putatively, up to 25 amps@24V, ie, half a kw). I want to rewire its negative lead from the minus terminal of the house battery to the upstream side of the Link10 shunt. Currently it's connected to the downstream side of the shunt because via the house batteries negative terminal.
Where is the best place to hook the minus lead into the upstream side of the shunt? Is there a junction box somewhere to which all the house 24V systems connect their minus (-) lead to so that Link10 can see their current use? If so, where is it? Thanks, Tim SV Third Wish SM2K #306

Lock downs on floor boards
Joerg Esdorn
I have been wondering how to install lock downs on the floor boards of my 55 so they cannot open in extreme conditions. Has anyone installed them and could share a picture and make and model fittings used? Many thanks!

Here are some responses to Mohammad's questions:
1. I have a Honda 20HP outboard, which is quite heavy (but the same weight as the 15HP). The boat behaves well with it - no issues. 2. I can plane with 4 people in it but not too much luggage. This was my objective. 3. I don't think I have any options - unless the 2 lockers upfront are an option. One of them is for the gas tank and the other for the anchor. Work well. Maybe it would be nice to have a cleat for the anchor line. 4. No issues. After 3 years of trying to get the dinghy to stop swinging around and the engine throttle taking the load when sailing on starboard tack (because the dinghy slides over when the boat heels), I now have very little movement. I also have 5 cm wide belts as tie downs. 5. Yes, on the 55 the dinghy fits perfectly sideways in front of the traveler and behind the mizzen. I first saw the rounded dinghy stops on the davits of Fortuna II, Paul Brown's boat. I modified them to give a few cm more space between the davits and the dinghy because the strops would otherwise have bottomed out against the davits. If you have different lifting strops, you can have the space reduced which brings the dinghy marginally further up. I hope this helps. Joerg Esdorn A55 Kincsem

Hi Victor,
We have had galvanised chain attached to a stainless anchor for the last 20 years. No signs of corrosion.

I am also in the process of getting a Mantus 105lb. My intention is to keep the current 10mm inox chain with the galvanized new Mantus, but I am concerned with galvanized corrosion. Any experience with this that anyone can share...?
Thanks

Re: Are Amel boats quiet?
Mine is very quiet no squiky sounds even during very uncomfortable passages. only a small sound from the wind screen/doghouse but that is a very minor issue. My friends sailing with us always comment that it is a very quiet boat Paul on sykerpa SM#259

Re: Are Amel boats quiet?
Yes they are quiet....almost totally
We had an annoying squeak last year in big seas, it was traced to one of the bolts holding down the hard dodger. Tightened it and the others, squeak gone. The only noise we have is from the sea running past the boat ( I quite like that), and sometimes going up wind and a bit overpowered, she slams. We have lock downs on our opening floorboards to prevent them opening but I would have to say we have never had any cupboards come open, not even the drawers just forward of the nav station, and we have been in some pretty rough stuff sometimes. I have never ever seen any boat that is as well constructed as our Amel SM 2000, and it was gratifying to see at La Rochelle last year the the new 50 and 60 are built in exactly the same way. Re: Size of main anchor for Super Maramu
Hi Steve,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
In my opinion a 47kg Mantus is overkill. Remember that the system is as strong as its weakest link. Pay particular attention to swivels and other connectors. I would suggest looking for something around 40kg as a maximum. For my 54 I chose a 37kg Spade anchor. When it is well set I can not budge it with a lot of power, I also went for new 10mm Grade 70 chain rather than the grade 40 and a massive Mantus swivel and special shackle that is as strong as the grade 70 chain. The original 30kg WASI is now a second anchor, but in my view it is undersized and a bit old fashioned. It does however fit well on the port roller, and is ready to go, and more or less manageable from a dinghy. Obviously there is a good argument for a massive anchor, but as you point out you must consider the windlass and the rest of the system. All in my humble opinion. Size of main anchor for Super Maramu
Stephen Nicholson
Hello everyone,
I am about to purchase a new Mantus 47 kg (105lb) galvanised anchor for my Super Maramu, which is the same size as that on SvDelos, but quite large for an SM which seem to usually have anchors around 30kg. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find out how Delos have got on with it, but most experienced sailors say it is better to go bigger for the extra security. With an all chain rode, 10mm I think, am I putting too much strain on the windlass on a daily basis? I would appreciate your thoughts and recommendations. Steve Nicholson SM Antigua II #89

Re: Are Amel boats quiet?
Hello I was at the boat show in La Rochelle with my wife two years ago. There we visited a Lagoon, a Hallberg-Rassy (beautiful yacht) and the New Amel 50. As soon as we entered the boats, the loud creaking of the floor boards on the first two yachts could be felt and heard. With the Lagoon, it must be said that a charter version is always different from an owner version. A friend of mine wants to buy a catamaran and has the same problem. My objection here is that with a catamaran of similar size and price, the quality has to take a back seat. In addition, these products are mass produced. Thank God I own a 20 year old Amel Super Maramu 2000 and I can safely say that it is a very quiet boat. Nothing rattles, the floor is solid and all cupboards still close tight. It is clear that there is always noise from shrouds, beating sails, ropes and waves while sailing. But these are minimized by the quality of the construction. You should also not neglect the safety aspect when making your purchase decisions. The Amel shipyard is also known for this. Cheers HEINZ SY Quetzal, SM 2000, 292

Hi, Kimberlite is now almost 18 years old. We have about 65,000 Sea miles on her. We never have had a squeak or rattle. It is quite quiet except when beating into very large waves. The boat never had any water below even when it was totally submerged probably 20 times in a hurricane. It was very strange to have to hold your breath in the cockpit with the sea over your head until the water quickly subsided. It was really cool seeing just the masts sticking out of the water for a few seconds until the boat popped back up. When we have been knocked down all cabinets and hatches remained closed with very little flying around (Books etc). There is no other boat that I would ever want to own. Hi;
We have zero creeks or noise in any condition that we encountered so far. The construction of Amels are unlike any I had seen in the 4 year search, it took to select our boat. We started from a blank slate.
We spent 3 days at the factory, before we made our final decision and looked at the different stages of construction. All bulkheads are glassed to the hulls and the deck is glassed to the hull, while still in the mold. No mechanical connections, that we could see. When you look at the construction before the deck goes on, it is built like a honeycomb. Therefore, there is almost zero flex and twist. The twisting and flexing is what leads to different parts rubbing against each other and creating the noise. Ours is quiet in a blow or at a rolly anchorage.

Hi, could you please let me know if Amel boats, SM specifically, are quiet boats? I’ve chartered Lagoon catamaran last week and it was a noise generating machine at anchorage and during passages. They wrap standing rigging with plastic tubes and when wind blows above 10 knots those tubes start to vibrate and transfer noise to rigging and then hulls. When you are in a cabin it feels like airplane propeller right next to you. I was very surprised when I realized where the noise is coming from. Also during sailing and at rolly anchorages boat flexed and squeaked a lot. I was not expecting so much squeaking from a 2 year old boat. I know Amel’s are a different class of a boat and build quality, but would like to confirm from this group what to expect. I’ve read marketing materials that bulkheads are glasses to hull and this eliminates squeaking, but what about all the other parts (floorboards, cabinets, etc)? Could you let me know how quiet Amel’s are and what to expect?
Thanks in advance for your help. --

Why do you use parallel - Is it to do with partial shading? Mine are in series to minimise loss in the cable as I have no space for thicker cables.
