Re: Front furler Bamar MEJ upgrade to EJF? Is it worth it?
Porter there is tubing that comes out of the bottom of the unit and goes through the deck into the sail locker it serves two purposes it carries the wires for the power it also acts as the drain for the unit sometimes if this package is not stretched tight a loop is created near the Furler so water cannot drain which then allows

Re: Headliner fix
Paul Stascavage
Just an FYI.
I’m not sure what headliner was used in the 54 or earlier models of SM’s, Maramu’s, etc., but the headliner in our boat (SM #466) was still available about a year ago. It has a felt like backing. We are looking to replace the fine plush like material that lines the forward and captains berth walls and thought the headliner would be a good replacement material as well as match the rest of the boat. Most SM’s we have seen have the pleated cushion material in these areas and it is attached with Velcro. Ours has this thin layer of material that appears to be glued in place. We haven’t completed the project yet as I am still trying to figure out if I will be able to remove these panels first. Hopefully this summer I will find some spare time to investigate further. It does appear that there are some screws behind the fabric but I am not sure if all the mounting screws are accessible. If anyone knows please let me know. Slightly off topic, but if anyone is interested, at the same time we purchased some of the original blue shower curtain material and had new curtains made. Again that was available as of about a year ago. All the Best, Paul Stascavage S/V Rita Kathryn SM #466 RitaKathryn.com Currently Cruising Bahamas

Make sure with the Bamar that it is set up to drain properly otherwise the brake will fail and ruin the motor
Otherwise great piece of kit

I have, what I believe, the 3rd generation BAMAR. This version is NOT belt driven but gear driven.
No problems at all – major improvement over the previous 2 versions.

I consider to change the genua furler (MEJ) to the newest BAMAR model (EFJ?) - if the technic is much better then the MEJ-modell (bad engineered + belts) . There where recently 2 belts broken (within
4 weeks, after 6 month of working fine) - not nice + lot of hard work. A thing that I do not wont to have again.
Is in the new modell still a belt inside?
What is your experience?
Or is it wiser to go directly to a Reckmann?
Thanks for your responses. Best regards Stefan AMEL 54 N° 119 LADY CHARLYETTE, currently Dominica

Further to Porter’s review below – or the connection between the EJF and the aluminum furler.
I checked RECKMANN before ordering the 3rd set of BAMAR’s but the price difference was extreme.

The EJF is fantastic. Flawless operation and a pleasure to use. No belt. One just has to be careful, whereas the weakest link in the MEJ was the belt, the weakest link in the EJF may now be the deck hardware! A reckmann seems fine too, but were very happy with the EJFs after 15k+miles. Porter A54-152 IBIS

NavPilot Furuno 511 - Amel 54
Stefan Schaufert
Dear Ameliens, had anybody (potential?) problems with the autopilot like this?: Recently we had some error reports on the autopilot (NAVpilot Furuno 511). 2 times: the motor for the steering is „to hot“; I checked everything and found nothing but a red light at the end of the hydraulic cylinder - see attached.
May be the light has to be there, but I do not think so. What does it mean?

Thanks for the reply.
Which Amel do you have? If a 54, did you have to make any modifications or make changes to the attachment points on the 310 for a good fit and connection when pulled up?

Re: Carrying Tender on Davits while crossing
Hi Mohammad,
Coming back to your 5 questions, here are my 5 cents: 1. Good 2. The 340 works well on my Simpson Davits. I lift it with my 15HP Yamaha on. 3. I had the 340 on the sundeck without releasing the air, but it only fits angular 4. Offshore my 340 is not at the Davits. Why should I turn an extremely seaworthy boat into something risky? 5. Hypalon. Chaps in both cases! Hope that helps., Alex

Re: Size of main anchor for Super Maramu
A couple of unsolicited thoughts on the Mantus bridle and equipment:
We purchased the 3/4” bridle version when we first started cruising. It was used maybe twice. I stopped using it because the double bridles become very twisted and removing the bridle becomes a difficult task. At anchor when the winds are light and the boat drifts about, or if the boat swings with the current the lines will twist. Also the lines are very long. If you let out the full length of the bridle, you will find you have more rope than chain out defeating the purpose of having an all chain rode. Of course, you do not need to let out the full bridle but then you are not taking advantage of the chafing guards.
The Mantus chain hook bracket is too large to go over the bow roller. To affix it and remove it one has to hang off the side of the boat and reach down to the chain. This may not seem like a big deal until you need to get the anchor up quickly. This device is now stowed the same place with the bridle. Instead I went the low tech route. I tie a rolling hitch with my 25’ snubber. The snubber is 1” Buccaneer Medallion 8-Strand Plait Nylon Rope offering superior shock absorbency and abrasion resistance. The tensile strength is 31,000 lbs. This has served us well.
With best regards,
Mark

Re: Amel water cooled refrigeration & Frigoboat/Fowjet saltwater pump
Hi Bill,
Just to put some additional pictures with your story The original pump as found on our Amel (hull 121) is the one in picture 1. It has the code A092819C like the one you specified. Our boat had indeed 2 pumps mounted next to each other, looking quite sad at the time we bought the boat. These are indeed a rebadged Flojet pump. When I ordered the new pumps from Frigoboat, I received the pump in picture 2 and 3. It has the code R4105343 and Frigoboat put a sticker over it with a serial number and a notification the pump runs on 12 Volt. As you can see it is a 24 Volt pump that they use at 12 Volt. That seemed a good idea at the time but nine moths in the tropics caused the commutator to look like picture 4. The copper is completely worn away and the pump is beyond repair. According to Flojet this is an intermittent duty pump. I tried using a brushless mag-drive pump using about 1.3 Amps @ 12 Volt but these are centrifugal pumps that simply do not deliver enough pressure to overcome the resistance in the pipes to produce a decent flow. I’ve been told you need at least 6 liters per minute to keep the compressors happy. I’m now using the Flojet pump you mention as well, the 4105-512 accepting for now the pump will need replacement quite frequently. I admire the work that Oliver did with replacing the insulation of the freezer cabinet. That seems by far the best thing to do for the tropics. Also replacing the motor of the Flojet pump with a brushless motor seems a very good idea. These two modifications would solve 80% of the problem. The remainder ideally would be solved by using a circulation system with heat radiators on the underside of the boat. and using coolant liquid as circulation fluid. But that would mean additional holes in the boat and all the rest, But for now my first action is to get a brushless motor for the Flojet pump-head. Cheers, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121
