Re: Headliner fix
James Alton
Bob, Removal of the wood panels was one of my concerns as well. Fortunately there was some relatively recent discussion on the boards that indicated that the panels are fastened in with the bolts and screws holding the windows in place. In addition there is apparently some silicone bonding the wood to the cabin sides. Bill Kinney on SV Harmonie recently removed, refinished and reinstalled the panels on his SM. Perhaps you could send him an email to get the details. They may also be in his blog. I think that Amel solved the deteriorating foam problem with the felt backed vinyl but I am not clear on what adhesive is best to use. When I bought my boat there were many different kinds of solvent based adhesives aboard that apparently were used by the previous owner and none of them seem to work. A friend with another Maramu glued up his liner with a thick white glue that looks like a version of the water based Carpenters glue and it seems to be holding. I have glued a few test areas up with minimal preparation and it seems to be working but I would not do the whole boat without more research. One good thing about the water based white glue is water clean up, no damage to the vinyl, non toxic and easy removal from the front berglass when I take the liner down fully to do the whole boat. Best of luck to you with your project. These boats are well worth the effort to restore IMO. James SV Sueno Maramu #220

Iridium go external antenna location
Scott SV Tengah
Hi all,
We just scored a great deal on a used Iridium Go with the external antenna. It comes with 12m of antenna cable and the mount for steel tubes. https://www.predictwind.com/iridium-go/#purchase-options Any suggestions on where to mount the external antenna? I'd like to mine your collective knowledge before I start drilling any new holes. We have a large aft solar arch and assume putting it back there would degrade the signal. Additionally, how have you all run the thick antenna cable into the boat? I would like to put the Iridium Go at the nav station, but that's not a requirement. Thanks in advance! -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Important Q for electrical engineers: Covering solar panels for Panama Canal transit - possible damage?
Scott SV Tengah
All,
We are scheduled to transit the Panama Canal today and I'm trying to be extra careful with respect to covering the panels to avoid damage by the monkey fists thrown by the canal advisors. Our intent is to use an extra sunbrella cover first and then put the cockpit cushions on top of that. I do recall somewhere that having complete shading on some parts of the panel but not others (as will happen with putting cockpit cushions on them) may cause hotspots and damage to the diodes. Any electrical engineers or more experienced folks have an opinion on this? We intend to turn off the master switches for pos/neg that are installed specifically for the solar panels. The 3 panels are setup in parallel, fyi. That should open circuit them and cause no current to flow and hence eliminate risk of damage, no? -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Re: Headliner fix
Robert Linley <minaxibob@...>
On my older SM6 I had the drooping headliner problem. My 1st fix was the wood strips idea screwed in to hold up the sagging areas. It looked good and lasted about 10 years before I had to start chasing kittens trying to “fix” new areas. Many of the wall sections are also peeling, such as captains berth and the heads. I am now considering the real fix of a total strip and new material (with proper protection per Joel). My concern is how to handle the areas of vinyl that were glued in place at the edges behind wood trim such as the wood wall panels in the window areas etc. does anyone know if these can be removed, I see no screws or attachment methods and do not want to mess up the fine woodwork.

I’m glad you are still going well - just for interest we did not have the black exhaust spot problem so I wonder if it is your engine or fuel combination? We used additives many different types which we bought as we sailed around. Peter Peter Forbes Carango 54 #035 La Rochelle 00447836 209730 07836 209730

Re: tb/custom broker BRISBANE/COOMERA QLD AUSTRALIA/AYOGF
Hi Teun,
I can't help you with Customs Broker in Brisbane, but I would think that pretty much any customs broker would be able to do it for you. Just FYI, in New Caledonia, when you arrive and clear customs (they never come to the boat) in Port Moselle, you complete the customs declaration and the Capitainnerie fax off the form to Customs and if you don't hear anything within a few hours then you are cleared in. If you want to get your imported items for the boat in duty and tax free, you need to ask the Capitainnerie to ask customs to send back an IFT number...they never send it without being asked...and often you need to ask a few times.....basically its the customs form you filled in with their reference number on it. Presenting that form to Fedex, DHL or whoever will ensure you don't pay tax or duty on items imported for the yacht in transit. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

People swear by this diesel fuel additive. Doesn’t deposit black soot on the hull.

How to clean the hull from diesel soot
Hi,
we love our Amel 54 but we constantly struggle to keep the exhaust side of the hull clean. A battle we often loose and after just another couple of days that black spot on the side start growing back - So frustrating. It’s also very difficult to get rid of the soot as it seems to grow into the gelcoat. When in NZ we polished the boat with SealX and the result was stunning - for a couple of weeks. Over time we’ve tried many many products but we still struggling and it’s so hard to clean the soot away and to keep the hull side clean. what products do you use to get rid of the soot? We appreciate all tips and tricks:) -- Carina SV Ultimo Amel 54 No 165

Steve,
I am not (yet) sure about delivery time and cost to HI, but I know Seattle would work. At this point it looks like one or possibly two, boxes UPS ground for something less than $100. Bill & Karen SM Harmonie, #160 Fort Lauderdale, FL

We need to replace our headlines well. I think. Going to do white PVC bead board It will be easy to keep clean. Probably going to use Velcro and use small pieces and some trim pieces that match the existing wood to cover up the seams. This way I can take it down and inspect for mold

Re: A55: fresh water pump system : Beam IV
Great to hear that you have most likely found the problem. If you still have a flow problem it is likely to be a partial blockage where the water is distributed. If so. I would back connect a hose to flush the circuit.

Strainer air lock
Patrick McAneny
Sailing back from Bermuda last spring , my engine would shut down and I discovered that there was no water in my strainer ,thus the engine had no water and shut down. We were sailing in only moderate to strong conditions ,but never heeled beyond 20 degrees. When I opened the strainer lid water would flow to the top, and I could motor once again. This same thing happened repeatedly ,and had never happened prior to this trip. I made a change to the cooling system in Bermuda, and I want to know if this may have caused this air lock .
Upon starting any boat engine, I have always checked the exhaust for water flow. However on my Amel the exhaust is at water level making it impossible to see if cooling water is flowing. When a couple of owners a while back posted that they had a small hose streaming cooling water into the cockpit confirming flow, I wished I had that set up,Amel must of added this feature to newer models. So in Bermuda I took off the anti siphon valve off the loop at the top of the hose from the heat exchanger to the exhaust elbow. In place of the valve I ran a small hose to my cockpit scupper to show me water flow. It worked only marginally well ,I surmise most of the water flow never rises to the top of the loop. I figured it still served as a siphon break as it is open to the atmosphere . My question is ,could this have allowed all the water to flow back out of the engine and strainer while heeled over and create an air lock ? Secondly has anyone have a photo of how this system is installed ,I would like to replicate it. Thanks, Pat SM Shenanigans

tb/custom broker BRISBANE/COOMERA QLD AUSTRALIA/AYOGF
Can somebody help/refer me to a customs broker near BRISBANE/COOMERA familiar with the YACHTS IN TRANSIT procedure. I am getting parts from AMEL and need to clear into AUSTRALIA.
In December/January a shipment from NEW CALEDONIA FedEx charged me GST, Duty etc. etc. which I agreed to pay to avoid FedEx returning the parts to NEW CALEDONIA. When I contacted ABF (AUSTRALIAN BORDER FORCE) last month for my 3 monthly reporting and questioned what happened they confirmed the YACHTS IN TRANSIT system works in AUSTRALIA but I need to use a customs broker for their “bond”.
Via a yacht broker in the marina/yard I contacted WALLACE Int. but they are not familiar with the YIT concept and try to convince me that I am not a commercial vessel and therefore YIT does not apply to me.
A reference would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Front furler Bamar MEJ upgrade to EJF? Is it worth it?
I also have a problem understanding the issue on the furler drainage. The thick black (electrical) cable does go via a ss pipe (if I remember correctly) into the sail/bow locker and on AMELIT the caulking around that cable into the ss pipe was compromised and allowed water into the sail/bow locker. Once we fixed that no more water via that entry into the locker.
When I am back on the boat I will check if there is a drain plug on the bottom of the furler.

I replaced both furlers with the EJF’s. Since they use a planetary gear system instead of belts and worm-gears the torque provided by the furler is about twice as high compared to the original MEJ’s at the same power consumption. For me
they are working well, When furling in strong winds I can’t hear the motor being stressed at all, it furls in quite smoothly.
