If the swivel is the same as on a SM, there is bearings.

We took ours apart and filed a document under files. I don’t renember the name if the doc but Genua Swivel or Forstay or something similar. There is a lot if pictures how the swivel looks and how it works. Regards Ann-Sofie on S/Y Lady Annila SM232, 1998.

Furler Top Swivel Santorin
Herbert Lackner
Hi Amelians,
I am working on KALI MERAs Genua Top Swivel. It does not slide up and down easy, sticks to the foil under load. I cleaned the foil and used rigging lubricant, but still it does not go up and down smooth. How is the connection between foil and swivel? Are there bearings or does it just slide (metal to metal). Especially at the upper part of the foil there are already some scratches, I tried to polish them out, but you can see that the swivel creates theses scratches, and under load it "jams". After polishing the foil and plenty of spray I can set the Genua, but it it is not as it should be. Any ideas how to solve that? thank you very much for your help herbert SN120, KALI MERA, Mexico

Hi Tom,
We have done both rudder gland packing an the bowthruster while in the water without issues. The jobs were done whilst in a marina berth with no water movement. We replaced all three rings of packing with the cut ends offset from each other. Cheers Alan Elyse SM 437

Re: Aluminium anodes for Sidepower
Ruslan Osmonov
Hi Paul, You need to know that there are no aluminum parts on a circuit. If you have Zinc, Aluminum, and Steel on one circuit. What is going to happen is that corrosion will always start with Zinc, then Aluminum, when both Zinc and Alu are eaten, corrosion will start eating Steel. If you have two similar metals, say two Alu parts, they are similar from corrosion perspective and you never know which one will go away first. In some case one will be eaten more than the other, sometimes equal parts, or the other way around. So if you have Alu part on a circuit I would always use Zinc to save Alu part. Magnesium is the best for fresh water. One thing to be aware of is Alu oxidation, if you don’t clean it, it will oxidate and may become ineffective. Bill, Zinc on Alu boats is an example of a mix.

Re: Aluminium anodes for Sidepower
Paul, This falls into the category of "If you look long enough, you can usually find different opinions and sometimes, even different facts. Maybe my response can be considered as falling into that category, but I am making it in the spirit of helping Amel owners. I believe this to be true: Generally speaking, Aluminum is for fresh/brackish
water
and Zinc for saltwater. And, generally speaking, you never mix aluminum and zinc in a bonding system. If you want to know for sure, I would ask Amel. The reason I would ask Amel rather than SidePower, or anyone else is that others probably don't know that the Amel bonding system is connected to the SidePower bow thruster and this may cause an issue of mixing aluminum and zinc in the same bonding circuit. That said, in the SidePower installation and user manual states that "ZINC ANODES" are to be used. Lastly, we should all be cautious about changing proven and working systems and devices, especially when we are not completely knowledgeable of the system or device and their interconnections to other systems and devices. --

Aluminium anodes for Sidepower

Hi all,
I came across this https://www.boatzincs.com/sm201180.html where it says aluminium anodes are superior to zinc for the Sidepower thruster. Has anyone had any experience using aluminium anodes?

Re: A54 rudder removal
Danny and Yvonne SIMMS
Hi Tom, not disagreeing with Bill at all (and certainly agree with the need for flat water) but I have done both the bow thruster and the rudder packing in the water. I would consider the rudder job lower risk if there is risk. I did have it suggested to me to put the dinghy on deck on the opposite end and fill it with water. I didn't try it but I would think it would be effective. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Paul, They are installed in layers. Sometimes, replacing the first layer is all that is needed, but there is no guarantee. If you replace the first layer, it may still leak at some point in the near future. That choice is yours. I am not sure what tools you are using to remove the packing. There are many different tools available: I hope this helps you. --

Re: A54 rudder removal

Bill,
After painstakingly digging out one of the existing stuffing rings I see no sign of dampness and the one I see below it seems to be in pretty good condition. As far as I know this is the first time this has been done and the boat is 12 years old. So I’m wondering if there is any point in going any further? I could just replace the one I dug out. What would be your advice?
And if I do need to replace all three then is there a prescribed technique for removing them? For the top one I just hacked away any which way I could!

The rudder stuffing box should be the only thing that may need attention on your 54.

Re: A54 fridge circulation pump
The normal amp draw of the FlowJet 4105-512 12VDC is 1.2. I assume that the "starting amperage" is momentarily higher. Considering everything, including voltage fluctuations when charging, maybe a 2 amp fuse is a little small. I agree with you about installing multiple relays to replace the really nicely designed Frigoboat E51385 pump controller. If I had to replace the
E51385
with multiple relays, I would want to design an enclosure for the relays and a fuse for the load. I have seen the E51385 for sale. I was probably old stock. --

Thanks for that info Bill. I did not realize what changes have been made.
I would want to retain the blue box, as it is far simpler for us Amelians who have factory systems. Converting to relays and all the associated wiring would not be much fun. Fortunately, I have had not issues with it, other than I had to go to a 3A fuse vs 2A. The 2A kept blowing unexpectedly - maybe an age thing there as the systems start to draw more current. Re: A54 rudder removal
Tom, I don't believe there is a safe answer to your question. For example if you are at anchor with the boat rocking fore to aft, obviously you should not attempt this job. The packing should be above the waterline, buI have seen Amels so overloaded that it is not safe to use the bow thruster in the water tool. Each owner should evaluate his situation. Re: Looks like Amel hit one out of the box.
Jamie,
I feel the same way about my Super Maramu 2000.. BUT...We visited La Rochelle in April last year and toured the factory, met the man that built our mast !, went for a sail with Antoine on the Amel 50, and I would have to say that the Amel spirit is still well alive. We also saw the very first 60 sitting in the water tank. The 50 is really Amel all over, however, they are obviously sensitive to the market as almost everything we have on our SM is optional on the 50... Like, bowthruster, genset, watermaker...even cockpit cushions... So if you look at the "list price" which is just under Eu 1 m, by the time you add all the stuff that we take for granted you're up to about Eu 1.5m Similarly with the 60...it gets to about Eu 2.5m BUT the boat is really good...construction, the same as always, water tight bulkheads as the SM, wonderful galley, very safe at sea, but the stbd sea berth of course has gone, but nice one up one down single berths just fwd of the saloon, maybe a good alternative. AND with the inside shrouds, she points really well.....which is something our 53 DOESN'T...and I miss that from our previous boat. If I had the money, which I don't, I'd order one in a minute,.... The 60, not so sure, in my opinion , it's just a bit TOO big, especially for someone like me that sails solo a lot of the time. Anyway, that's probably a bit more that 2 cents worth, as you guys say. Bow chain plate of Sharki
Hello everyone, I need some photos of the bow chain plate of the Sharki. Being mine, the # 1 (1979) this part is different from the following ones and I replaced it in 1996 because it had broken.
After 24 years and many miles I have to replace it again because it is breaking. The weak points are the two pins, bolted to the bow that secure the plate on the deck, which are subjected to great lateral efforts that cause strong stress to the material. I would therefore like to do a definitive work to avoid repeating this problem. Thank you very much in advance for your precious help.
