Re: Crossing Pirate Waters
Thanks for your excellent idea Bill of creating a subgroup (hopefully an easily clickable tab?) which we could all click on to see anything which could be thought to have a "commercial" focus, but yet be totally Amel related, and interesting/helpful/useful to owners who see it. This could possibly have a weekly or monthly summary feed into the main group, or simply be left for us to wander over and have a look from time to time. We are all different, and that is a good thing as we have such a diverse group of passionate owners here. In our case, we actually often enjoy seeing any useful Amel related "commercial" type postings and for example, look forward to actually purchasing and reading this book to compare it with our own circumnavigation. As usual, though, Bill has been swift in taking a stand, and then on reflection, quickly offer an even a better solution that would enhance this group even more. Thank you Bill! For more than ten years now we have been members of this incredible group of passionate Amel owners. Over this time, especially going back 7-9 years, there have been many occasions where we have all seen Bill quickly and fearlessly step in, and take a stand in the interests of the wider group, to keep things moving forward and in the right direction. There are others here too who have done similarly, and that is in our opinion why this group has become such an incredible resource and actually and enhancement to the entire Amel Brand, even with the new direction today. To Bill and the others, THANK YOU! Colin & Lauren Streeter SV Island Pearl II, sm #332 Brisbane, Australia

Re: Limiting group members to Amel Owners

Agreed. This site is an invaluable source of information concerning Amel yachts, and I consider myself a prospective Amel buyer who is yet to find “the one”. This site has reinforced to me the wisdom of purchasing an Amel yacht, there is really no other support group like this regarding other brands. It would be a mistake to limit membership to Amel owners only, not only because it possibly hinders their ability sell their Amel when it’s their time, but also it prevents lurkers such as myself from joining the community and becoming involved with the ins and outs of Amel ownership. The original issue was someone plugging their book on this site, which can be remedied easy enough. That poster asked the question if it was right or not to plug their book which was a fair question to ask. No harm done. I don’t understand how it has now manifested to possibly excluding non-owners from the group. To me that goes against the spirit of this community and what it’s about.

Welcome to the group Doug. We looked at Aventura back in 2014 but the deal did not go through. We also saw her in Turkey where we purchased Kokomo. She was very clean and well cared for. Wishing you the best adventures that you will discover on an Amel like no other yacht. Hope to see you around.
Respectfully;

First time emailer to the group. Love it! Stalking and learning, first, and now one of those newbie owners! Purchased last month, after quite a few months of reading old email threads. Keeping it open demonstrates what a great fellowship of learning and sharing that is native to this group. Helped me to know what I was getting into with such a huge investment.

Courtney and Porter,
Agreed 100%. I could not have said it better.
Almost a year ago, when we moved to the groups,io platform, we made it clear that our group included Amel owners and those interested in the Amel brand. Since then about half of the new members have been those interested in the Amel brand. A significant number of those new members interested in the Amel brand have bought either a new or used Amel. Of course, we all understand the benefits to Amel, Amel owners, and interested parties.
We are working on a unique solution to the "commercial posting" issue which will satisfy both sides with a bonus for every member. Some of the details need some work before it is presented to the moderators for their consideration, but I am certain it will satisfy everyone.
Standby. Best,

We are in the middle of closing on our Amel Mango now. This user site totally convinced us of the value Amel represents and appreciating the Amel Cult following. We are confident in the purchase and know the highest resale value awaits when we retire our cruising life in 15 years. Thanks for everyone’s experiences. Cheers Martin hAMELine

Limiting group members to Amel Owners
Porter McRoberts
It was being a lurker on this forum years ago which confirmed, for me, that an Amel was the right boat for our family. Now 3 years in and 20,000 miles later I’m so thankful, not only for the fine vessel (A54-152) we own but also this incredible group of thoughtful and intelligent members. My vote is to keep it open to those with Amel interests, not just owners.

Mark and Paul. Spot on. More respect for ‘moderator’ Bill wouldn’t go amiss either. The forum is a non commercial, excellent resource for Amel owners, being information based and apolitical, with clear guidelines for use. Opinions on so called commercial enterprises are irrelevant and should be barred.

Quite galling also to read non-amel owners inappropriately throwing their weight around. Should the forum be restricted to owners only? David Ker Marie SM#101

Re: Crossing Pirate Waters
I too support maintaining focus of this groups postings, the group is undoubtably a great resource and to receive valuable information with every post, however as there is so much email traffic regarding helpful hints and great Amel owner information, commercial and social communication between few members cause email traffic that should not be shared and cloud us as receivers, as there is no way to filter what is regarded as junk to many.

I have found many things are just not available from Amel. I have a 54 and it has the Passarella that you put on Manually. The holes and in need of replacing. Amel does not have them.
Also I thought I would get a new main sail halyard. Again no. "The computer says, no" Has anyone else had to source these? Regards, Randall A-54 #56

Re: Crossing Pirate Waters
My 2 cents on this:
I prefer not to have my feed from this group junked up with people selling Amel shirts, books on Amel travels, blogs with Amel owners, video channels featuring Amels etc.
While I’m sure Julie is a nice person and is passionate about her book, this is not the forum for self-promotion. She needs to establish a commercial fund to promote her book rather than trying the self promote “free” route at our expense. She can, at no-charge start a fan-club page on FaceBook, promote her page using paid ads and grow her membership. People wishing to follow her awaiting for the trilogy can do so.
This is what is stated on the front page of our group: This Group frowns on commercial postings, however we encourage postings which will genuinely help Amel owners source needed parts and services. We encourage you to support the Amel brand and be respectful to the brand in your postings. Care should be taken to not post anything that could be considered offensive or derogatory regarding Amel, any Member, or Sponsor. Please refrain from political issues, rude, or inappropriate language. Please refrain from criticism of persons or businesses which you may have experienced unsatisfactory results, because it would be one-sided, without the ability of the other side to respond.
With best regards,
Mark

I am with Brian and most of the others in support of Julie's posting. Her book is about sailing an Amel and that makes all of the difference.
