Re: Are Amel boats quiet?
Mine is very quiet no squiky sounds even during very uncomfortable passages. only a small sound from the wind screen/doghouse but that is a very minor issue. My friends sailing with us always comment that it is a very quiet boat Paul on sykerpa SM#259

Re: Are Amel boats quiet?
Yes they are quiet....almost totally
We had an annoying squeak last year in big seas, it was traced to one of the bolts holding down the hard dodger. Tightened it and the others, squeak gone. The only noise we have is from the sea running past the boat ( I quite like that), and sometimes going up wind and a bit overpowered, she slams. We have lock downs on our opening floorboards to prevent them opening but I would have to say we have never had any cupboards come open, not even the drawers just forward of the nav station, and we have been in some pretty rough stuff sometimes. I have never ever seen any boat that is as well constructed as our Amel SM 2000, and it was gratifying to see at La Rochelle last year the the new 50 and 60 are built in exactly the same way. Re: Size of main anchor for Super Maramu
Hi Steve,

In my opinion a 47kg Mantus is overkill. Remember that the system is as strong as its weakest link. Pay particular attention to swivels and other connectors. I would suggest looking for something around 40kg as a maximum. For my 54 I chose a 37kg Spade anchor. When it is well set I can not budge it with a lot of power, I also went for new 10mm Grade 70 chain rather than the grade 40 and a massive Mantus swivel and special shackle that is as strong as the grade 70 chain. The original 30kg WASI is now a second anchor, but in my view it is undersized and a bit old fashioned. It does however fit well on the port roller, and is ready to go, and more or less manageable from a dinghy. Obviously there is a good argument for a massive anchor, but as you point out you must consider the windlass and the rest of the system. All in my humble opinion. Size of main anchor for Super Maramu
Stephen Nicholson
Hello everyone,
I am about to purchase a new Mantus 47 kg (105lb) galvanised anchor for my Super Maramu, which is the same size as that on SvDelos, but quite large for an SM which seem to usually have anchors around 30kg. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find out how Delos have got on with it, but most experienced sailors say it is better to go bigger for the extra security. With an all chain rode, 10mm I think, am I putting too much strain on the windlass on a daily basis? I would appreciate your thoughts and recommendations. Steve Nicholson SM Antigua II #89

Re: Are Amel boats quiet?
Hello I was at the boat show in La Rochelle with my wife two years ago. There we visited a Lagoon, a Hallberg-Rassy (beautiful yacht) and the New Amel 50. As soon as we entered the boats, the loud creaking of the floor boards on the first two yachts could be felt and heard. With the Lagoon, it must be said that a charter version is always different from an owner version. A friend of mine wants to buy a catamaran and has the same problem. My objection here is that with a catamaran of similar size and price, the quality has to take a back seat. In addition, these products are mass produced. Thank God I own a 20 year old Amel Super Maramu 2000 and I can safely say that it is a very quiet boat. Nothing rattles, the floor is solid and all cupboards still close tight. It is clear that there is always noise from shrouds, beating sails, ropes and waves while sailing. But these are minimized by the quality of the construction. You should also not neglect the safety aspect when making your purchase decisions. The Amel shipyard is also known for this. Cheers HEINZ SY Quetzal, SM 2000, 292

Hi, Kimberlite is now almost 18 years old. We have about 65,000 Sea miles on her. We never have had a squeak or rattle. It is quite quiet except when beating into very large waves. The boat never had any water below even when it was totally submerged probably 20 times in a hurricane. It was very strange to have to hold your breath in the cockpit with the sea over your head until the water quickly subsided. It was really cool seeing just the masts sticking out of the water for a few seconds until the boat popped back up. When we have been knocked down all cabinets and hatches remained closed with very little flying around (Books etc). There is no other boat that I would ever want to own. Hi;
We have zero creeks or noise in any condition that we encountered so far. The construction of Amels are unlike any I had seen in the 4 year search, it took to select our boat. We started from a blank slate.
We spent 3 days at the factory, before we made our final decision and looked at the different stages of construction. All bulkheads are glassed to the hulls and the deck is glassed to the hull, while still in the mold. No mechanical connections, that we could see. When you look at the construction before the deck goes on, it is built like a honeycomb. Therefore, there is almost zero flex and twist. The twisting and flexing is what leads to different parts rubbing against each other and creating the noise. Ours is quiet in a blow or at a rolly anchorage.

Hi, could you please let me know if Amel boats, SM specifically, are quiet boats? I’ve chartered Lagoon catamaran last week and it was a noise generating machine at anchorage and during passages. They wrap standing rigging with plastic tubes and when wind blows above 10 knots those tubes start to vibrate and transfer noise to rigging and then hulls. When you are in a cabin it feels like airplane propeller right next to you. I was very surprised when I realized where the noise is coming from. Also during sailing and at rolly anchorages boat flexed and squeaked a lot. I was not expecting so much squeaking from a 2 year old boat. I know Amel’s are a different class of a boat and build quality, but would like to confirm from this group what to expect. I’ve read marketing materials that bulkheads are glasses to hull and this eliminates squeaking, but what about all the other parts (floorboards, cabinets, etc)? Could you let me know how quiet Amel’s are and what to expect?
Thanks in advance for your help. --

Why do you use parallel - Is it to do with partial shading? Mine are in series to minimise loss in the cable as I have no space for thicker cables.

Thanks for the input everyone. We literally have resigned to having Sleipner New Zealand look at it, when we get there in November!! But the fact that two of you have experienced failures on the short cables on the motor means it's worth looking at.
I have gone through the entire Sleipner troubleshooting guide, linked below, which should eliminate control circuit malfunctions. The problem still persists. Re: Recommended solar panel brand

David,
I have experience with LG Neon2 320w panels and that's it. I have 3 of them wired IN PARALLEL on my aft custom arch and run through a Victron BlueSolar MPPT into Victron LiFePO4 batteries and have averaged around 200-225 amp hours a day of production. I'm pretty happy with them. I know I sound like a lithium preacher, but consider lithium if you don't have it. I believe it's Porter McRoberts who has a similar solar setup as me but outputs far less because his AGM(?) batteries can't take full charging current at high states of charge. And when you add in 25-30% charging inefficiency for lead vs. 2-3% for lifepo4, my 960w array would be the equivalent to a 720w array if I had AGM/Gel/Flooded Lead. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Paul,
Pretty sure fuel outlet is fore as that's where the Racors are. The forward hatch wires are for the electronic fuel gauge in the cockpit fuel locker. There's bit of a baffle. Just open up the hatches and all will be obvious. It's pretty easy to open. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Re: Carrying Tender on Davits while crossing
Mohammad,
1) I have a Highfield CL310 HYP as does Dean. The transom "lip" where the tubes are glued was bent when it arrived. Probably bad packaging. This is not the first time I have heard of this - Highfield fixed it under warranty after a bit of complaining. 2) The CL310 will fit with a bit of modification. Dean described the eye he mounted in the bow locker and I did the same. You will also need to mount some eyes, facing inwards, on the triangular transom supports as far forward as you can. Then place a metal ring halfway between the rings using rope lashing. It fits fine. I have a Suzuki 20AS which does not rotate 90 degrees so it takes a bit of positioning to have it all fit. I then use a line through the built in "eyes" on the dinghy stern floor up to the ring where the davit lines/wires come out of, to secure the dinghy. Don't rely on the lifting wires to hold up the dinghy once underway. While you're at it, change the davit wires to 12 strand dyneema. You can do it with very little modification - Simpson wanted 4000GBP for a "dyneema conversion kit" and it's simply unnecessary. You can do it yourself if you know how to splice 12 strand dyneema or pay a rigger 100euros. For the bow, I secure the dinghy using a high quality stainless/aluminum ratchet with one end attached to the eye at the end of the davit arm and the other to a loop secured to the "armpit" of the davits. The reason why I did not go for the CL340 is two fold: a) I put the dinghy on the aft deck and the outboard in the lazarette on big passages. Coming around Cape Hatteras and even crossing the Med in fall, I have seen some waves from astern that may have swamped a hanging dinghy. I have also had the dinghy come slightly loose while sailing and while the wasn't a big deal on a day sail or short overnighter, I wouldn't want to deal with it in the middle of an Indian Ocean gale, far offshore. With the CL310 I can position the dinghy upside down on the aft deck and have it NOT protrude into the cockpit nor have it interfere with the mizzen track. It barely fits. I don't think the CL340 will fit unless you put it diagonally. b) When it's just me and the misses doing a beach landing, with swell, we are at our limit carrying the CL310 with a 20hp engine. I tried to drag my friend's CL340 up a beach with him (he's 100kg and 195cm tall) and we struggled. In the Med, dinghy docks were aplenty. Less so in some parts of the Caribbean and probably even less so in the South Pacific. 5) I went with Hypalon. I believe I paid 3700 euros total for my CL310 HYP. Not sure where you are but I bought it from a dealer in Slovenia VAT-free. Hypalon was not much more in our case and the cost of chaps was more than the upcharge for hypalon. In the tropics, it was a no brainer for me. I have a PVC backup rollup dinghy and it's faring far worse. Hope this helps. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Hi Joerg;
Thanks for the photos. Definitely a nice improvement to the Davits. The Davits on the 55 are closer spaced than the 54 and I believe are parallel and not at an angle like the 54. I think you could have carried either the 310 or the 340. I think the 310 on the 54 is problematic.
A few questions, if you don’t mind;

Hi Mohammad, I have the CL 340 in Hypalon and it's in good shape after 4 seasons in the Med. The French dealer in La Rochelle convinced me that Hypalon is the way to go for the Med/Caribbean. I have the Amel provided davits on the 55
but I have some custom brackets which fixate the dinghy very well - no sliding or other movement whatsoever. see pics. For passages, I put on a cover to prevent a wave from filling the dinghy and I've not had any problems. For offshore passages with a chance
of serious gales, like a Transatlantic West to East, however, I would put the dinghy on the aft deck and the engine in the aft locker. For one, I don't think I could deploy a drogue with the dinghy hanging from the davits.
