Propshaft alternator on 1985 Mango
Arlo
Hello all. Thought I would pass this info along to my fellow Mango and Maramu owners. (Not sure about the sharki or others)...Had my propshaft alternator rebuilt and a new regulator installed. The alternator is a motorola 9MR-2-814-0 20 amp 12 volt unit. The voltage regulator is not the original but we were able to get a motorola M5-763 regulator to work. Pictures are below.

The lock that was in use I was able to find a keyblank for and had spares made, but naturally that was the lock that broke...

Thanks for all the replies. I plan to visit the aboved referenced store in Miami during my next trip there. I have a spare lock but that is the one where the key has been difficult to find. All of the locksmiths I visited were true locksmiths and had walls of blanks...

Mango vs Meltem
Daniel Alexander Thompson
Hello
I'd very much appreciate if anybody might offer input regarding the following: Do the Meltems have the same bulkhead configuration as the SMs? Do the Mangos have an aft cabin bulkhead? What mileage might a Meltem do, on the same course and day that a Mango does 170 miles? Any disadvantages for a Meltem vs a Mango as a live aboard Bluewater cruiser? My very best regards

Warning about the foot of middle (removable) stanchion of lifeline/railing at the stern (Amel 54)
Dear forum,
I discovered some water ingress in the rear locker of the boat and traced it back to failing sealant under the foot of the removable stanchion. So I removed the foot to discover a bit of sloppy work from Amel. The hole goes trough the sandwich-deck leaving the balsa core exposed. The protection with caulking is insufficient as the three bolts that hold the foot cannot hold the foot completely in place as the sandwich flexes around the hole (compression of the balsa) ever so slightly. After some years this will cause the caulking to loose its seal and water will get to the balsa core. On the long run this will have very bad consequences for the deck. To remedy this I remove all caulking and removed the balsa core as far as I could between the two glass-fiber layers (about 3 or 4 cm deep). This also clears the three bolt-holes. Next I made sure it dried out completely, Impregnated the cavity as best I could with thin epoxy. After the epoxy set I filled the cavity completely with thickened epoxy. After this epoxy was set I re-drilled the boltholes. Finally I replaced the stanchion-foot with some Sikaflex. Because the boltholes are now in massive material you can properly tighten them, making the foot more stable and making the life for the caulking easier. Regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Hello group, Eric and Robyn here, recent owners of SM Libby in the Pacific NW. Regarding keys, we had best match from local keysmith, close, but didn't work. With eyeball filing to work out difference from original we got the new ones to work. Good luck and happy New year.

Re: New companionway lock source
I did exactly that only 3 months ago when I purchased my SM2. Any good locksmith will have matching blanks. I believe it was a Yale lock. The Home Depot/Walmart locksmiths were not able to match it, however.

It's a French key and the blanks are hard to find outside France.
Maude sav at amel dot fr used to have them in stock...worth a try. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Arlo,
There have been some past discussions on the boards about sourcing key blanks so you might try searching. From what I have gathered, apparently Amel used a few different ones depending on the model. I ordered the Hy-Ko Key Blank Ez #Y2 single sided from Amazon for my own boat after reading that these fit some of the boats. They did not fit my Maramu but apparently they fit some or perhaps all of the SM’s based on what I read. They were only about $8 for a pack of 10. I managed to find the keys I needed for my boat in Montenegro so even those are still out there. Best, James SV Sueno Maramu #220 Preveza, Greece

Are you in a SM? Hull number? Always helpful. If a SM. indeed the key blanks can be hard to locate. The big box hardware stores do not carry them. I have had luck in two separate old-time, rusty and musty hardware stores that recognized the blanks immediately. Or you could try a locksmith. The smaller hardware stores and locksmiths, even if they don’t have the blanks, might special order them for you, albeit for a little more money. I would still think a better option than a new lock. Re: Recommentation for Sharki second autopilot
Aras <aras.grinius@...>
On my Sharki I have a Simrad AP28 CONTROLLER, RAYMARINE MOTOR mounted just above in the galley. It came with the boat. I also had a 2nd unit which was a RAYMARINE 3000 wheel mount.
I trashed the 3000. The mount interfered with helmsman, and was only good in calm conditions.

Re: Damp in Sharki aft Cabin bulkhead
We had the same problem with our Mango. The source was water ingress through the mizzen, following the cables of the radar and the vhf. These pass through an opening in the bulkhead and can be inspected by removing the mirror in the aft heads. Possibly this is the same in the sharki.

Yes we have that problem. And have tried waterweld in the corners of each cavity. It has made a difference.

Re: Super Maramu 2000 - Water in bilge hall way compartment
Lucy & Chris, More than likely the water accumulation is because the bow thruster needs servicing with tube seal replacements, or you have sailed the boat without using the locking pin to secure the bow thruster in the UP position, or maybe you sailed with the bow thruster in the DOWN position. Whatever the cause, the accumulated water is likely not the only thing you need to address. Things like seals, rust on the base of the motor, and possibly a bow thruster tube frozen to the base of the motor. I don't mean to scare you, but you probably need some help. Maybe we should discuss this. I offer 1 hour of consulting at no cost to you: 1 hour free consulting Let me know. brouse@... --

Re: Super Maramu 2000 - Water in bilge hall way compartment
You can buy in-expensive battery powered water alarms from Amazon. Place one in this compartment and you will get a quick reminder when you leave the bow thruster down, un-pinned or the seals no longer keep the water out. If you really bash into the waves for a while, some sea water may be forced past the bow thruster seals even when they keep it out in other conditions. Best regards, Daniel Carlson on sv BeBe, SM#387

The seacock should be the sea water intake for the toilet. If you have closed the sea cock the pump won’t work.
