Hello José,
While on the subject of seal orientation, some time ago (maybe 2-3 years?), you installed your prop shaft seals in a different orientation than the "Amel way".  I recall you had the three seals, from front to back (first to last when installing) with the first two facing out (open side toward the sea) and the last one facing in (open side toward oil). Your logic was great - that we're trying to keep water out and so have the maximum protection of the first two do just that, with any oil seepage giving lubrication and the outer seal stopping oil from escaping to sea.

How has that worked out - is your oil still pristine?

I should have asked this question in my first post but what model Yanmar engine is it?  If its newer one with electronically controlled fuel injection via an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) than my first response is invalid as it was referring to older (all mechanical) diesel engines.

Yes we know M stands for Marine in the industry when buying parts. 

So thanks to this site, I found what hatches are on my Euros 41 and asked RigRite for a quote for 2 skus. One they don't have but this one just impressed me. I shouldn't be too shocked but come on!

Also love the section - 'Lead time on Goi PT-HP8 @ 12 weeks'

So serious question, in my business I can produce parts such as this in titanium. I could make the pins, plastic handle, the screw above for less than these daft prices. Thoughts anyone?
Also with plastic printing being relatively cheap now, how many people need these parts or similar but hold off owing to the costs? Could organise a group purchase.

Thanks to all for your replies. 

I got the wheel back on today with the play removed which was the intitial plan. I also ditched the cog and chain for the autopilot which isn't working. I can't see that being reinstated but as we do, I'll keep the parts for now.

Re the cables, I haven't checked the condition as the aft cabin is a storeroom for looming jobs. It is smooth though for now. Hydraulic no doubt the way forward, but maybe with an autopilot integration at the same time. With me being in Greece, there isn't a lot of point for autopilot, just if I venture further one day.

Remote two way valve for flushing the water maker

I found this two way valve to make it possible to flush the water maker without going down to the engine room. A bit expensive 450 €. anyone know a cheaper solution.  Yrs I know open the hatch and go down the engine room is a cheaper solution but I'm looking for a remote controlled way to flush the water-maker

The mechanic at the marina asked the same question about the auto-shutdown feature, so he's investigating that. I am about to pump some fuel from the bottom of the tank to check for water. I will also check for a vacuum on the fuel line, that's a good idea.

It runs smoothly and fires up instantly so it doesn't sound like she's starving for fuel or air. The engine only has 30 hours and has be very reliable.

 

Any ideas?

Yes they are intended to replace the hard lip seal. I installed them in the opposite order of your second picture but with the same orientation that you have them : Both lips facing the water.
I noted that the current seals came a little bit off in the dimensions of my first order and gluing the upper (wiper) seal to the lower (U) seal leaves a small gap in the surface of contact unless you glue them before mounting them and you place some weight on them while the permanent silicone glue is dry.
However, I think that if you mount them the way you show in the second picture there will not leave a gap and they should work OK. That is not what I did with my seals 3 years ago but I would be tempted to do it that way when, and if, I replace them with the new set.

In fact your order may result in an even better sealing action and better attachment between each other and to the fiberglass.

We have just arrived back in Australia after completing our circumnavigation this week. Right now we are in Bundaberg for a few weeks but will return home to Brisbane soon around mid-November.

 

Please do not ever consider leaving your Amel on an anchor anywhere in Brisbane. That was not good advice at all.

 

In terms of Brisbane Marinas, we choose a small fairly unknown marina called Newport Marina to berth SV island Pearl II since it is safe, within walking distance from the train to the city and airport. It is a quiet residential type marina with old, but well-kept facilities, and has plenty of car parking right near the boat. It is not a lively place with shops and restaurants, but we like it quiet and it is surrounded by nice upmarket waterfront homes on a canal system. This in our view makes it the safest marina in Brisbane if a tropical storm should ever hit, which is almost impossible. 

 

Fortunately, the prices there also very reasonable since it is not well known that the entrance channel has recently been deepened, and this was also not shown on the Navionics charts. Most cruisers would not be aware that they could get in there, but it is now at least  2m at low tide LAT, so it is easy to get your Amel in there at most times other than just an hour or two either side of absolute low tides. You can contact the Manager "Mandy" on email: info@..., or call her on and ask her if she has any free spots on D Berth facing the main channel as Island Pearl II is normally there, and am happy to keep a good eye on any Amels who berth near Island Pearl II. Unfortunately, I think there was recently only one space available, so if interested then try to contact her soon and mention me in case that helps get you in. The marina is located at 158 Griffith Road, Newport, QLD 4020... Phone: 07 3203 5855 

 

The marina/boatyard called "Laurie's Marina" in Mooloolaba is also a reasonable option, and I am aware that they did lift an Amel 53 there a few years ago, and built a nice hardtop for it, and the owner was happy with all the work they did. 

 

The other marina to consider is Scarborough Marina (very near Newport Marina) which has a fully working boatyard, however, their travel lift is a bit small, so I personally would not lift even my Amel 53 there. Contact them on +61 7 3880 0300 - website www.scarbmarina.com.au.

 

In terms of having Copper Coat work done I would firstly trust the "BOATWORKS" boatyard on the Gold Coast the most. That is where I always haul out Island Pearl II for normal antifouling paint and prop shaft / Bowthruster servicing, but I do the servicing myself and use them for the paint job. It is without any doubt the best boatyard we have come across anywhere in the world and has all the expertise and parts you could need right there. Prices are not bad too. You can contact them on admin@the boatworks.com.au or phone +61 7 55 000 000 and speak to the manager about who has the best copper coat application experience in his yard. If you have an Autoprop, there is the Australian Autoprop agent right there too who recently replaced my autoprop bearings there and did a great job.

 

Finally, Teuns, check with Boatworks about long term out of water storage for your Amel too. I have been away from Australia for 3 years now but recently heard that Boatworks now have this service too. That could be a good option for you too.

Volvo D3 - 110 Exhaust Elbow needed

 

If one of you has a Volvo D3-110 exhaust elbow, I could use it. 

As you probably know HDI Marine the manufacturer of Stainless Steel Investment Cast elbows is a Preferred Vendor of Yacht School

I just received an email from HDI asking if I could locate a D3-110 elbow for them to use to make a mold which will allow them to produce a Stainless Steel Investment Cast elbow for the D3-110. If you have an old one in any condition, it will work.

I would second what John said. Having had problems with the Onan impellers for several months, the engine would countless times run for several minutes and then shut down due to overheating. I would question, since this is a new engine, whether it has some sort of shut-down procedure when it detects a fault, overheating, pressure, etc. How much electronics does the engine have?
But, I'm not diesel guru.

Hi Tom, I'm just catching up with this thread so late to the game. We also had some leakage along the forward inward edge of the tank so removed it and had it rewelded like James did. As others have said, freeing the tank is pretty straightforward but then it’s very awkward to move because it’s heavy and top heavy. We used a strap arrangement like you see for a couple of people moving a refrigerator. I removed the companionway rail plus the top of the hatch (it’s lightly glued on, back out the screws then tap upward with a block of wood). Then I removed the bottom stop block and could drop the hatch below the level of the threshold to gain a couple more inches of clearance. To get the tank out of the salon we had to rotate it 180 vertically, so that the fuel fill pipe was still forward but down (don't ask how we figured that out). Once it was in the cockpit a mizzenmast halyard did the trick for lifting it out and over the side. One other thing is that when you install the new tank it’s easiest to get the fill hose in place by removing the deck fill fitting. Good luck!

I had a similar colored liquid in my bilge. after a long search it turned out to be the red gear box oil mixed with diesel. reason was leaking gearbox and leaking diesel hp pump. fixed both and all is fine now.
you might also want to check on the heat exchanger lines if everything is tightened properly.
what does the liquid smell / taste like?
