Hi John, 7 days hand steering is not much fun, I feel for you. My ray marine auto helm stopped functioning once when we were transiting French Polynesia and there was limited help available. All those technicians I could find advised all sorts of expensive replacements. A wise long time cruiser said check the electrical connections to the linear drive. He was right, they were wrong. There was a corroded wire joint. I had wasted two weeks waiting for parts to be delivered. Although two weeks in Raeatea isn't too painful. My fist lesson. Many many faults on our boats systems are caused by simple connection corrosion.

Hi John,

Sorry, but I'm still not clear about your situation. An autopilot system basically has three components; 1. a control unit, 2. an ACU (processor) with a heading sensor, and 3. a drive unit (rotary, linear, etc.)

It sounds like you have an original ST6002 control head that doesn't work and alongside that a second ST6002 control head that now also doesn't work.  You don't mention what ACU(s) you have or if they work but the original was likely a Raymarine ACU400. Does it work? If you have a second ACU, does it work? Then it sounds like you've got an original Raymarine Type 2 Rotary drive actuator but you didn't note if it works or not, plus an added linear drive of unspecified origin that doesn't work (maybe).

It sounds like someone added a redundant system with a linear drive. Does this have it's own ST6002 control unit AND it's own ACU (making it totally redundant)? Is the linear drive back at the quadrant? We can only guess at the configurations you have, but it sounds like you would have little or no re-engineering to simply replace the failed component(s) of either the original rotary system or the added linear system. Fix the one with the least broken parts :-) if you don't want the redundancy.

It would be easy to enjoy the San Blas where there is “less” crime then head to shelter bay marina. We liked the Portobello anchorage, but I have to admit the eyes felt hungry there. And Colon? I’ve been to a lot of places and never felt the way I felt in Colon.  

Just skip Portobello. Cool cannons. Really amazing history. Very sad monkey in a cage. A few Chinese quickmarts.

Hi Paul,

We have had a 33kg stainless Spade for the past 19 years in countless anchorages and conditions.  Alain Poireaud , the inventor, became a friend though alas has since died.

 When we set off in 2002 on a 7 year  circumnavigation of South America we had three Spades on board. One was a galvanised 33kg, in case we lost our stainless one and we also had one the same size in aluminium, weighing 15k kg. The galvanised one never met the sea and is now on board Eamonn  Washington's SM, Travel Bug. The aluminium one we used about 5 times to tandem anchor when we first arrived in Chile, where we had been assured it would be needed.  It wasn't. Each time we used it in tandem ( as the first down anchor, attached to the main anchor by 10 feet of chain ) it was clear that the main anchor had done all the work on its own, so from then on we have happily relied on just the stainless.

 The aluminium one has remained in the locker ever since except when we used in it to pull a French boat off the beach in Itaparica  in Brazil after he gone ashore in a storm. We laid the anchor out with about 300 meters of line and he winched himself off. The anchor didn't budge.

From what I have heard the rocna is also a fine anchor but the dialogue between the owners of the rocna and Alain when it came to a Wikipedia entry was pretty unhappy. There is room for both anchors--and others--in the boating world. However, I think Alain might have a wry smile on his face as he looks down from his celestial cruising ground and sees the Vulcan, a  development of the original rocna.  Notice any similarity ?

Sorry to hear that you are not happy with Rocna. I have changed from Original Buegel, (which is now BB on second Roller), to Rocna 40kg and using it the second season now. 

Never dragged since then. I’m very happy with it and had several occasions recently with 180-degree shifts. I observed and dived the Anchor after a shift and discovered it may drag 0.5m or 1m (but not more) for resetting.

I had many troubles with the Buegel in the Agean Sea, especially when the bottom was partly covered by weed the holding was poor.

I am a bit surprised your Rocna is not working as you expect; ours was brilliant (on our previous boat) even with a 180 degree wind shift.  Does yours have the roll over bar?  

I had a CQR before on Eleuthera and this was pretty bad so having found a ULTRA dealer who gave me a big discount, I went for it.  If you do ULTRA, the 35Kg has worked perfectly for us. The 45KG should also fit.  Ensure you get the ULTRA swivel and chain claw.  Both are great kit esp the swivel which always brings the anchor aboard right side up.

Along side that the newer Raymarine st6002 unit  (now failed) had been installed

It is a linear drive and might be repairable 

What I’m trying to do is to identify a new system to purchase and install as close as possible to the present system so I don’t have to get into a lot of re-engineering 

Can’t get to wifi before midday after clearing customs (who don’t work on sat and Sunday!)

Hello all,

I confirm the original chain wash pump on the AMEL 54 is an AMFA 66 without pressure tank.
The freshwater pump being an AMFA 88B with pressure tank.
For all AMFA 66 and 88 fresh water pumps, one of the causes of the pressure switch not to cut-off, is when the small hole for water leading to the rubber membrane is clogged from scaling.Then, the water pressure is not strong enough to move the springed switch.  To get access to it, you need to remove the plumbing fitting of the pressure switch from the pump. 
A good cleaning will improve this.

The common causes are too low battery voltage or worn out brushes.

It would be nice to have the S40 installed like on your pictures but on my A54 #18 AMEL is the 66B the Anchor wash pump. I rarely use it and it still working perfect.

Hi John,
It is easy to test the linear drive.
Just put voltage on the two heavy wires mine is 24 volts yours might be 12 volts.
The apply voltage to the thin 2 wires the clutch, always 12 volts.
If the drive doesn’t work, just take it apart it is very simple . It might be the gears inside or you might have to clean out the dust from the brushes or replace them. It is a very strong drive and is still used by Raymarine.

The planetary gears and the drive belt are also available.

Paul:  I fitted an Aluminum Spade Anchor - Model # 1294552 - (?? weight I am guessing about 55 lbs) in 2008.  It has set the first time every time since and the only time it dragged was when I had hooked an underwater cable and it slid along it.  Sets in every type of seabed I have encountered in the last 11 years.  I now notice I have some pitting in the tip of the aluminum where the lead is but still seems structurally sound, have had no shank bending and other than the two pitts in the tip there is no other corrosion noticeable.  Fits perfectly on my boat. Highly recommended.

Heads up to owners in the Panama area on the Caribbean side. There has been a serious rash of armed robberies between Shelter Bay Marina and the San Blas Islands. Buying the right Amel under the right terms can be daunting for anyone, even the most experienced.

After searching for some months I recently decide to proceed with purchasing an Amel.  The vessel in question is EU VAT Paid and broker listed.  For me the VAT paid status is important as I intend to register the vessel under the UK Ship Registry Part 1 (among other reasons this enables me to retain the VAT Paid status).    My offer was made based on the seller providing the documentation which proves the yacht has EU VAT Paid Status, to accommodate the sale of the boat, allow operation in EU and International Waters, and accommodate registration in the UK.   I went ahead and signed the broker contract, paid my deposit.  Survey is completed, handling of any technical issues related to the survey was settled, with the last step before payment being the release of the documents.  UK HMR&C (UK Customs) are clear that to prove to them the vessel has VAT Paid status a copy of the original invoice is required, showing the price paid for the vessel and the amount of VAT paid, plus resale of the vessel without such a document would be "very difficult".   A copy of all Bills of Sale between the original sale and the current ownership are also required.  In the last days before payment was due, the broker informed me the original Amel invoice showing the VAT paid was not available (seller did not have a copy and broker informed me Amel refused to provide a copy - even though Amel attest to the VAT being paid originally without giving the amount - no use to UK customs).  In those last days the seller/broker also revealed the hitherto known to them but not revealed to me this was a three owner vessel rather than a single owner as previously discussed.  Prior owner documents presented were not acceptable to the UK MCA for registration.  In short without the necessary EU VAT paid and registration documentation the purchase cannot proceed.  Very disappointing, particularly as the way the brokers contract is written I paid several thousand Euros for the survey, haulout, and other items as part of the purchase process before I get to find out the documentation is significantly deficient.  Broker is still claiming vessel documentation is sufficient (I believe customs and MCA officers opinions are the ones that count)  and so far has refused to return the deposit, so for now I cannot move on.   What a mess.  Does any of this sound familiar to you?  Have you any relevant experience?
