Re: Important Update Re: No steering parts, rack & pinion, cables, from Amel
Mark McGovern
Bill,
Just to clarify, Ultraflex is committing to make one last batch of cables ONLY? What about the rack and pinion gears? From reading posts on steering failures on this forum it seems that the racks are prone to failure - even if their failure is preceded, and potentially caused by, cable failures. -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

3-D printing of furler motor parts
Thomas Kleman
My old furler motor (original) called it quits. While It will be rebuilt, tested, and become a spare, my spare furling motor (bought from Amel years ago) is slightly different in that the old motor's upper jacket which holds the white vinyl motor cover is slightly too big. It doesnt fit snugly on the new motor, which came without one. I measured what I need and have given the task to Ronan (Kent's 3-D printing vendor). We will see how this goes. Price was quoted as about $25 so why not ?
I'm also interested in making the upper and lower gear box mounting discs (that hold it in the mast). I will supply pics in the event of success or remain completely silent if this ends up being a fools errand. Tom and Kirstin SV L'ORIENT SM 2K 422

Re: Keel bolt cover
That bolt stabilizes the C-Drive from torque. Below is a snip from my Amel Book, showing the bolt and its rubber bushing. It should be sealed with a flexible removable sealer. Black silicone RTV is one such material. If the aft part of the C-Drive can be moved to either side by 10mm, or more, the C-Drive Foot Rubber Bushing needs to be replaced. The rubber bushing replacement part is a piece of heavy duty 1” or 25mm hose. Recommendation is side to side movement of 5mm or less. The replacement procedure is fairly straight forward, generally easy, and in my Amel Book. --

Re: Important Update Re: No steering parts, rack & pinion, cables, from Amel
All SN, SM & 54 owners:
If you recall, one owner attempted to order steering rack and/or cable parts from Amel and was told the parts were no longer available. As soon as I read this, I got in touch with Amel, who told me Ultraflex, the Italian rack and cable manufacturer, abruptly and without notice stopped production of these parts. I asked Amel for some help and they said that they were working on a solution. I continued to follow-up with Uflex, the US distributor for Ultraflex, Italy. I asked Uflex USA to get involved with Ultraflex and push them for a solution. I promised all of you that I would post any results here. The following is from Uflex USA. If you need/want replacement steering rack or cable parts, you should probably order them now from SAV"at"Amel.fr. It seems as though the steering rack normally lasts 20+ years. Cables usually last longer. Without replacement parts you will be forced to install a major steering change. Email message to me from Uflex USA:
Ultraflex, Italy is in contact with Chantier Amel in France, apparently they will be able to supply them a last batch of cables.

Re: Down wind pole corrosion damage

Hi Thomas, Good catch! I noticed Annie's short poles collect water inside. I have toyed with the idea of drilling a small drain hole to let it drain. Letting them stand upright in the sun for a week or so drains them but I can't always do that. (Admittedly sometimes just lazy and leave them out...) John SV Annie SM 37 Brunswick GA

Re: Yanmar 4jh3-hte overheat

Hi Duane, I had a similar experience right after I purchased Anne, first indication of issue with the impeller was as you said a different sound. We had no overheat alarms just a much more pronounced exhaust sound. This was with the TMD-22. Lesson for all is to listen to your vessel...she will tell you is something isn't right. Duane,
I am a little confused (normal for me). Is the engine fixed? Did you resolve the overheat issue or are you still experiencing hot temperatures at higher RPMs?

Re: Deck Repairs to Amel Mango
Charles Bell
Hello Ian,
We are resurfacing the decks of Mango #29 right now. We sanded off the loose "molded-teak" and have sealed with a 2-part high-build sealant. Then we will top with some sort of a surface treatment / non-slip. The contractor we are using has done several boats with the same technique. I will dig up more information about the steps and materials we are using. Feel free to reach out to me if I don't get back to you quickly enough. Charles

Re: Wave slap / banging under the stern

When Kelly and I first got out SM, we were bothered by this sound, too. I think I even noted it during the sea trial. I remember it keeping us up the first night we stayed on the boat. But shortly thereafter, it went away, and I don't think it was simply that we got used to it -- a few times I've remembered it and listened for it, and I just don't hear it anymore. My best guess is that when the boat was really empty, it was sitting higher in the water and had lots of space for the sound to reverberate in. We've now got it loaded up with so much crap it sits lower in the stern. The aft locker and space beneath the aft berth are jammed with stuff. I bet that does a lot to dampen the sound. These are used in a few places on our Super Maramu, most notably on the cockpit table. Amel replaced one for us in Martinique and I'm pretty sure they just called it a "special nut". Google translates that name as "lentil nut", which is a very apt description. Thanks for the source! Ryan and Kelly

Re: Yanmar 4jh3-hte overheat
Hi, after experience in dirty harbors with running the aircon and full sea water filter, overheating of engine friend ones SM I decide to install the attached instrument. It get installed after water injection in the exhaust and acts much faster then the engine temp control. The temperature of the exhaust increasing much faster then the engine himself. With this you can control the sea water filter and the impeller!!! Re: Yanmar 4jh3-hte overheat

Duane,
Generally, temp sensors work off of resistance with high resistance when cold and much lower resistance as the medium gets hotter. You can use a cup of room temperature water and boiling water and measure the resistance across the wires of the sensor and see if there is any difference. However, you would need the actual specifications on the Yanmar temperature sending unit to test it definitively and make sure it is working properly. I suppose you could buy a new sensor, test it the same way and compare the results to the old sensor. If the results are similar you could assume that the old sensor is working properly. A few Amel owners have taken to installing a secondary separate Exhaust Temperature sensor and alarm. You can read about it here: https://amelyachtowners.groups.io/g/main/message/17290?p=,,,20,0,0,0::Created,,muffler+melt,20,2,0,29759579 -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA
