To expand on Bill's expansion :), replacing the rotor cap requires unbolting the old one and swapping out the new one.  I would get the seal kit, too. It's only 8 euro or so. Includes the shaft lip seal and a replacement bearing.

Every A54 seems to be different (!?!?) but to use the Marco on mine required me to buy hose barb adapters. I got these:

I got the 3/8" BSP x 15mm barb. The BSP end is for the pump and the barb end is for my existing hoses. You will need 2 of these.

Re: Autopilot

Alex & Arno AND others interested

In the early days of the 54 production, there were at least some fitted with the same Raymarine M81134 Type 2 Long Linear Drive 24 Volt units, Raymarine 7001+ control head and a Raymarine autopilot computer (plus fluxgate and rudder ref).  This, BTW, is the reason the photo of the helm in your A54 Manual shows Raymarine:
image.png

Maybe Alex has Raymarine. In that case it is normal for a Raymarine drive unit of this age to be spilling some dust. I believe the dust normally comes from brush wear on the 24 volt motor, but may also be some wear of the 12 volt clutch. The reddish brown color makes me believe it might be the clutch, but the carbon brush dust will turn a reddish color from rust. If I am correct about the Raymarine drive, it is one of those bulletproof devices from the past and you should certainly have it rebuilt, or DIY.

Depending on this it’s bad or not great, the latter being the rod.
If it were the autopilot cylinder, I would expect lots of leakage of hydraulic oil as well.

In case it’s the steering cable (the rod) you should consider replacement and for the short term lubrication with grease.

Hi Scott

We are currently wintering in north Sicily and planning to cross late next year to the Caribbean, so it’s a long shot, if you still have it on board when you get to Australia if that’s on route we can arrange a trade then or some other time if no one purchases it from you in the mean time

It is a great attribute for sailing for sure

Let's see if anyone else wants it, otherwise I would like to sell it prior to getting to leaving the US in a month or so as we are picking up our Parasailor in the Caribbean and would prefer not having to deal with storing both!

Re: Eno oven flows gas WITHOUT flame

Craig Briggs

Hi Scott,
Clearly having gas continue to flow with no flame should not be able to occur.

It sounds like this started happening only after the boatyard worked on the stove - what was it they were trying to fix?  That may help finding the problem.

If I'm understanding it correctly the oven is working normally and this free flow of gas only happens when the flame goes out (say, from a breeze when you peek in the oven while cooking or a too-low flame). Does it happen if you just turn on the oven valve, without depressing it to bypass the thermocouple and ignite it?

How long does the gas continue to flow?  Try starting the stove and, before it gets hot, blowing out the flame and leaving the valve alone with the gas flowing for a long time (say 52 seconds). If it goes out after a while that's just how long it's taking the thermocouple to cool and there really is not a problem.

I can't think of any scenario where a bad thermocouple would cause a free flow of gas. It has to be heated to produce the current that keeps the valve open.
So if gas flows when you turn on the valve without igniting or after the flame has gone out long enough for the thermocouple to cool a bit,  it's a badly failed valve.

Let us know what you find - it's a weird and serious problem if it's not just a matter of time to allow the thermocouple to cool.
Craig

Re: Gennaker + furler for sale

G’day Scott

We have the same set up on our 55 and it’s a great Gennika sail and furler unit. We find we can run up to 16knots true with no issue and she really moves us along, but it does helps motoring down wind when you need to furl in... We have had it up to 22knots true, though not by choice and find it a little tougher to furl in, but by motoring down wind at around 7knots at 150 degrees it is manageable at 22 knots true if the situation arises.. it does work so well and very handy between 50-150deg in light winds we find, it’s our favourite sail.

You should hang onto it as a spare perhaps.

I’m not sure if you’re sail would work on a 55 but I would like it as a spare if you don’t sell it along the way

We got the gennaker up on our last trip and took some more photos. As mentioned, there are some dirty spots that could use some washing. We used it at 180degrees apparent, but that was because we're in the Chesapeake now and there's little swell. Usually we use it from 50-130 apparent or so.

Of course it fits an A54 perfectly. It appears that SM owners should have a small bowsprit made due to the size.  I understand Eric of Kimberlite had one made for his far larger gennaker and it works well. You can see in one of the photos how I attach it on my A54 - right to the bow roller.

We're in Annapolis for the boat show for the next week or so and then leaving the US for the Caribbean after Nov 1. My friends over at Quantum have stated that they can help me ship it and they stated it won't be too expensive, for what that's worth!

Re: A54 fridge circulation pump and a New Source for Marco Pumps

Two Things: More about the UP2-P and a New Source for Marco Pumps:

I believe that the UP2-P pump with PTFE gears (impellers), rated at 10 l/min at 24 volts, part number 16420213, is a good replacement for the Flojet 4105. I believe that the UP2-P 24 volt pump will output about 5 liter/min when connected to 12 volts and draw about 1.5 amps. To expand on Scott's statement about replacing brushes, Marco part number R6400080 (R-KIT motor cap ø52 mm) costs 24.93€ from www.Marco.it, or $28.56 from www.marco-pumps.com (more about this source below). This motor cap has the brushes installed. I believe that the best process is to simply replace this cap (photo below). The more adventurous could probably find and solder brushes to the existing cap.

There is another source for Marco Pumps, shipping Marco pumps, worldwide from Vienna: www.marco-pumps.com  You will find almost all Marco pumps at this site (soon to be 100% of them), and a huge selection of Marco Pump Parts (Spares and Accessories). This source regularly ships to all of Europe AND is especially good for shipping to the USA, because they have a flat rate of $15 to ship to the US via USPS. They are now one of about 25 of the Preferred Vendors to Amel Yacht Owners SchoolThe Preferred Vendor Discounts range from 5% to 20% on Amel OEM parts, equivatents, and services.

I will share the Preferred Vendor Discount code for Yacht School clients with www.marco-pumps.com I have never done this before in this group. The Preferred Vender codes have always only been available to my clients, but I will make the exception this time. If you choose to order from www.marco-pumps.com, use code AMELSCHOOL to receive an additional 5%. Frankly, it appears that www.marco-pumps.com may be the best place to buy Marco Pump Parts (Spares and Accessories). They appear to stock a wider variety than www.Marco.it or the Marco US distributor www.mate-usa.com

DISCLAIMERS:
I receive absolutely nothing when my clients order from Preferred Vendors
We do not have much history or experience with www.marco-pumps.com. At this point, I know of only one Amel owner who has ordered from them.

Exactly right. The keel (aka freshwater tank) is below the pump but I think the waterline is above it.

I checked with Davis’ Pub (Eastport) for Thursday evening. They do not take reservations but said they are not too busy between 5:00 and 6:00 so seating for 10 or so should not be a problem. Let’s shoot for 5:30. Alan and Kent/Iris have expressed interest in dinner. All are welcome aboard Aletes earlier in the afternoon to talk about the exciting topic of Amel maintenance.  Please confirm attendance at either event. Looking forward it!

For the maintenance/repairs “forum” (sounds way too formal) I have RSVP’s so far from Jay Pokorski and Charles (SV Saturn). We’ll meet on Aletes (anchored at the mouth of Back  Creek…unless weather pushes an alternative anchorage…will advise) at 2:00 Thursday afternoon. Anyone land based or dinghy deprived that wants to attend let us know and we can arrange a pickup. Anyone is welcome to join us for beverages and dinner afterwards at Davis’ Pub.

Aletes would like to host an Amel maintenance/repair forum on board either Thurs or Friday afternoon of Boat Show week. The idea would be to share everyone’s experiences with some of the unique equipment on our vessels.

Possible topics, and please add to the list, might include:

Bow Thrusters, furling gearboxes (motorized and manual), battery strategies, deck finish (restoration and striping), anti-fouling, hard-won lessons and other tricks.

We’ll do it if there is interest, so let me know which day and additional topics. Bring your issues and get the insights of others.

Re: Eno oven flows gas WITHOUT flame

Scott SV Tengah

Thomas,

The process I have implemented is that we turn off the solenoid FIRST and then the gas knobs.

But humans, especially new/temporary visiting crew not used to doing that on land, sometimes make mistakes, despite all my red tape and written/verbal reminders that gas is dangerous. I want to fix the technical issue as relying on perfect process alone is a recipe for disaster IMO.

Anyone else with knowledge/ideas?
