Re: Prop antifouling

We’ve also used prop speed for the past 5 years in the Med and have always had good results.

I do also believe the level of success is highly dependent on the application. I had done a fair amount of research and had discussed process with the applicators. I would only allow applicators that were very familiar with the method of application, to
do the work. Respectfully;

Re: Prop antifouling
I have used Propspeed on Elyse and on my previous boat with great success.
The only time it didn't work well was when I left the boat in the water for 4 months in Fiji and the prop grew oysters! It seems to me it certainly works better if the boat is moving. We haul out this month for antifoul, C-drive, bow thruster etc and will use Propspeed again. Someone mentioned grease.....many years ago, BP - Before Propspeed, we used to clean the prop, sand it until it shone, heat it up with a heat gun and then paint lanolin grease onto it. That seemed to work OK, would last a few months, nothing like as good as Propspeed. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

We used propspeed on our previous yahct that had a stainless steel rudder and bronze prop. It was a total success and each time after hauling out having done the prop 18 months previous, it was like the propspeed had only been applied the previous day.

Re: Leroy Somer Spare parts

Hi Kent and Ian. When we were in Shelter Bay marina Colon waiting to transit the Panama canal a staff member of the marina smashed one of the top plates trying to remove the central shaft. I only had two days before we transited and we found an egineeering shop in Colon who turned up a new one in aluminiun. It was perfect. The breakage occured because he applied force instead of heat which is what I had asked him to do. Once the blow torch was subseqently applied the shaft came out easily. Brian,
Your are just a bit too late as everyone is departing this week for points East and South. We keep our SM in the Middle Chesapeake but that's a four hour drive north. The Chesapeake Bay really is huge! Mark -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

The Propspeed instructions actually say 3-5 minutes between coats. And sounds like nobody on this forum has used Propspeed successfully (themselves). Think I'm going to give the Pettit treatment a try this time.

Proper application is also the key to successful CopperCoat antifouling.

I tried PropSpeed, 3 times. Applied it myself. Followed the directions to the letter. Maybe the directions are wrong, as they don’t say you need to apply the top coat while the primer is still wet. ~~~⛵️~~~Matt

I used PropSpeed with mixed results. But, while in Turkey I met an American catamaran cruising couple, who loved it. He and his wife had used PropSpeed 6 or 7 times with success.

Thanks for the info. I am waiting on an estimate from a UK outfit cat pumps.co.uk for them to supply the kit and to do the job.

I have watched a couple of YouTube videos. It looks reasonably simple given a good working environment and a methodical approach. Nick Amelia 54-019 Greece

FYI- I just ordered 4 gear box tops from Kent's vendor in Annapolis for $100 each (no design work necessary so saved $50; thanks Kent). If you're buying this from Ronan, he now calls it "the Kent part".

Re: 160l/hr Water-maker hp pump
I rebuilt the 20 year old high pressure pump on my 24V D60 a few years ago with parts I got through Dessalator guy in Maine (Mark Fruehoff-Balcen Marine Technical Setvices-(207) 522-6737-info@...). The parts cost ~$750US. It wasn’t hard to do and has worked fine since.

However if I go to the trouble of taking it out then it should get a full service at the same time; new low and high pressure seals and valve check. This is something that I could do myself so long as I have the parts... I am hauling out on Monday; not sure I will find anyone here. Looks to me like either 1. I send it to a repair shop in Athens. Anyone know one? 2. I take it in my bag to the UK and either service it myself or have it serviced. 3. Leave it on the boat and source the service kit in the UK and service it myself in the spring. Re: Drain plug for C-drive and Spurs
Does anyone know the thread size of the drain plug?
I'd like to use a short nipple with a hose on it to drain the oil into a proper container rather than a makeshift funnel or whatever that always gets messy. I'm using 90 weight oil so there's enough time after you remove the plug to screw in the nipple before the oil starts flowing. Thanks, Craig
