Re: Maramu 1984 - Genoa - Original sailpan overlap
Karen Smith
James,
You might want to contact Dave Benjamin of Island Planet Sails. He is a former Maramu owner, and is well familiar with the various Amel sails and how the originals fit the boat. Because of the unique features of the Amel, in general if you have someone asking you what size jib you want, you can be pretty sure they don't really know what the boat should have or how it should work. This is especially true of boats that use the Amel downwind rig. You can't vary your sail size and have it work well.

Maramu window ply interior removal
smiles bernard
Hi there fellow Amelians
Thanks to Ian on Ocean Hobo for describing how the interior ply window panels come out on his SN. Apparently remove window screws and bolts and the ply will come away with some persuasion. So in effect the window screws and through bolts hold the ply interior in place on the SN. Does anyone on the group have direct experience of this on a Maramu? Is it the same ? I have a troublesome leak on the main coach roof and it’s effecting the ply around the windows and damaging the veneer. Grr. I am failing to locate the source . I think it’s from the handrail or the main hatch above the table so have tarped these and will apply a process of elimination but the answer probably lies in headliner removal The headliner ticks under the window ply so hence the question! I do wish Amel had used screwed into headliner panels. Seems to make so much sense for many reasons and wonder why they didn’t. Can’t imagine it was a cost cutting thing. Perhaps aesthetics but I’d trade those for simplicity. Perhaps the newer models have adopted this ? All the best and happy sailing for those afloat Miles Maramu 162 In the hard ! Plymouth uk

Circuit break switch panel LED back lighting
David Crisp
Hi All,
Most of the blue LEDs that back light the labels on the AC and DC circuit breaker switch panels are not working. Wilna Grace is 12 years so it’s either age or not being suitable for the variance in voltage variance (I’m thinking of the 28V one gets when charging batteries). I’m not aboard at the moment so does anyone know the specification of these LED (voltage, luminance etc.)? I’ll buy some component replacements and then get the soldering iron out and fit them when I get back aboard.
Best David SV Wilna Grace Amel 44

My MARAMU sn 179 has a 150 headsail that was copied from the original. I am currently sailing South Pacfic and I am thinking of replacing it with a 130. The reason any wind over 15 knots it needs to be reefed to 130 or 100 And the boat preforms better. My two cents.

Hi Danny,

Initially we had it done professionally, in various marinas around Auckland, over 15 years. We started putting it on our selves when propspeed put it on the market for general consumer. We found it to be the only product to stick to the stainless steel rudder and it always performed well on the prop. Honestly after 18 months you would swear it had only been done. We always ensured the prep was done properly. Regards Ross and Donna

Hi Ross and Donna, Given your boats name did you have it done in New Zealand? I have had it done professionally in Opua, Auckland and Tauranga. Same result in each case, after six months, hello barnacles. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

We’ve also used prop speed for the past 5 years in the Med and have always had good results.

I do also believe the level of success is highly dependent on the application. I had done a fair amount of research and had discussed process with the applicators. I would only allow applicators that were very familiar with the method of application, to
do the work. Respectfully;

Re: Prop antifouling
I have used Propspeed on Elyse and on my previous boat with great success.
The only time it didn't work well was when I left the boat in the water for 4 months in Fiji and the prop grew oysters! It seems to me it certainly works better if the boat is moving. We haul out this month for antifoul, C-drive, bow thruster etc and will use Propspeed again. Someone mentioned grease.....many years ago, BP - Before Propspeed, we used to clean the prop, sand it until it shone, heat it up with a heat gun and then paint lanolin grease onto it. That seemed to work OK, would last a few months, nothing like as good as Propspeed. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Re: Prop antifouling

We used propspeed on our previous yahct that had a stainless steel rudder and bronze prop. It was a total success and each time after hauling out having done the prop 18 months previous, it was like the propspeed had only been applied the previous day.

Re: Leroy Somer Spare parts
Danny and Yvonne SIMMS
Hi Kent and Ian. When we were in Shelter Bay marina Colon waiting to transit the Panama canal a staff member of the marina smashed one of the top plates trying to remove the central shaft. I only had two days before we transited and we found an egineeering shop in Colon who turned up a new one in aluminiun. It was perfect. The breakage occured because he applied force instead of heat which is what I had asked him to do. Once the blow torch was subseqently applied the shaft came out easily.
