Matt, who did you have do it at Cape Marina? I will likely be getting it done next summer and I am at Cape Marina. Also what did they charge you if youndont mind me asking...

headsail furler locking pin.

Danny and Yvonne SIMMS

Hi all,

the pin holding the headsail furler to the motor let go yesterday allowing the involuntary unfurling of the headsail. The pin must have lifted out of its hole to allow this to happen. The pin and its mechanism are still in place and when not under load functioning normally. For this to happen it would seem that the pin and/or the hole have become tapered. The fix would seem to be to remove the pin mechanism (photo attached) and turn the receiving plate and drill a new hole down through the hole for the mechanism. If the pin is worn as well repair or replace. So far so good. Has anyone removed this mechanism. Before I apply force to it I would like to be sure it is threaded in and not retained by another method. There is a hex on it, and looking closely it seems there is a build up of alloy around its base, if so this may have been done to prevent the fitting unscrewing involuntarily, a sensible precaution. I would appreciate the sharing of experience on this.

Thanking you in anticipation

Danny

Hi Eric. Sorry for the delay in replying we are cruising in and put of email contact. I couldnt say the type of insertion rubber but i made the diaphragm out of 2mm. I thought of putting two in but didnt. I would think that 2x2mm would be more flexible than 1x 3mm. Anyway i will see how the  1x 2mm goes. The flap I made out of 3mm. Two thickneses glued together to give 6 on the flap, 3 at the flex hinge and 6 where the little bar is screwed through to locate it. The 6mm on the flap is much thicker than the standard so less prone to "curving". I got a special rubber cement to glue it but i am sorry my memory wont stretch 5 years. I would think that the glue out of a cycle tyre repair kit would do but what i got was reputed to be supeior. Hope this helps.

There are a number of insertion rubbers available made of different rubbers.

What type did you use? What thickness did you use for the diaphragm and the flapper valves?

Hi, in the absence of a kit to hand  I made copies of the flap valves out of thick insertion rubber. This a fibre reinforced rubber sheet. I found the replacements tended to take a curve and not seal well. I got about 5 years out of the ones I made. I have just installed a new diaphragm I made out of a suitable thickness insertion rubber sheet. I punched the centre hole, put it on the shaft, closed the pump on to it, held it there while I drilled the holes. Then bolted it up and trimmed around to outer size. Working well. I made a second while I was at it to put in spares. I have been carrying the insertion rubber sheet as spare for some years. If I get premature failure (which I doubt) Ill buy the replacement

I could have bought one first up  but I enjoy the process.

Cruising again at last. At Volivoli, Viti Vevu Fiji. Had two magnificent dives with Wananuva dive this morning. Wow.

TF Marine makes an identical pump. It is either number TM-50 or TM-70...not sure. I cannot tell you where to find TF Marine spares, except at Amel...Amel replaced the reya pump with TF Marine.

Hi Ruedi,
In my opinion soda blasting is great at removing old paint and leaving a perfect surface for epoxy primer; so long as the operator knows what he is doing...
That is a big caveat.
In the wrong hands the gelcoat can be damaged such that it will require some filling and fairing.
Perhaps you can see a sample of the work.
Sand and grit blasting are more aggressive and best avoided.

I don’t know this process and asking the group of their knowledge and how good/bad it is for the undelaying Gelcoat?

Is there anything to be aware or specific care to know when doing Soda Blasting?

I know from reading that sandblasting can damage the gel-coat, is Soda Blasting same or less invasive for the hull?

Good morning Russ,

I saved mine.
It is about 35-40% used (but would prefer a sailmaker gives an exact state of use), need the bi-annual restitching.
The only issue, it is in Sint Marten (where it will have to be picked up) and I won’t be there for a few more months…

Sincerely, Alexandre

Note: I also have main sail in similar condition and a brand new Mizzen sail.

Lip Seals and Outhaul gearbox

Mike Ondra

Some have fitted the outhaul gearbox with grease fittings. How has that worked out?

We have been trying to seal the top shaft with RTV where water lays to try to mitigate water intrusion and rust. Other ideas?

Also the factory paint job seemed to hold up only 2 or 3 years. Power coat or epoxy on the, what appears to be, cast aluminum?

Thanks, Mike

Rebuilding our outhaul gearbox, bow thruster, and replacing drive shaft seals pushed me to do an inventory of all our lip seals. Thought the list might be of use to others, or others may have additions/corrections/comments in developing a master, at least for SMs. Note our hull #240.

Hi Dan.

I see you are SM#116 and looking at Bonfiglioli gearbox. We are Hull #240 with Leroy Somer MVA M33 gearbox but the reduction ratio should hold true depending on motor speed. Ours is 1:60 paired with a 3000 rpm motor.
